Hi there, We’re heading to Japan soon and booked a room through Booking for our first two nights. The host is asking for a copy of our passports even though we’ve already paid. What do you all think? Thanks

Hi there, I’d contact the hotel with a new email—not by replying to the one you received—to make sure they’re actually making this request, which really surprises me. I’ve only traveled to Japan twice, for a total of 8 weeks, but I’ve never been asked for my passport in advance. They usually ask for it when you arrive at the hotel, though.

There have been quite a few scams, though, via Booking.com after it was hacked. For example, last year I’d booked a room in a small town in Korea. I got a request on the Booking app for early payment, supposedly from the hotel. It was a scam—we didn’t fall for it—and when I contacted the hotel directly, they confirmed they hadn’t asked for anything. So stay alert; this could be an attempt to steal your data.

Hi there,

A traditional hotel with a front desk and check-in process will never ask for your passport details in advance. However, if it's not a "real hotel"—meaning check-in is automated or there’s no physical front desk—the request is normal. In your case, you mentioned a "rental," which is likely the key to the issue.

This isn’t a traditional hotel, or even a hotel at all. It’s a host.
