Hi everyone! I’m heading to Indonesia in September with 3 friends, and we’re starting to plan our itinerary, but we’re still not sure which islands to prioritize. We love nature, road trips, and want to avoid mass tourism. If you have any tips on less touristy but equally stunning islands, I’d love to hear them! 😊

Also, our budget is pretty tight, so we’re looking for ways to manage money during the trip. What are your tips for saving money while still making the most of the experience? And if you have any tricks for tracking and sharing expenses between us, I’m really interested! We tried Excel, but it’s not always easy to manage.

I’m finalizing my trip plans for Sumatra in June. I’m trying to lock in a trek (around 5 days), but I’m not really finding what I’m looking for.

The idea is to really go "off the beaten path" (I’m not a fan of the phrase since it’s lost all meaning, but anyway...). However, I’m struggling to find destinations or programs that are even slightly original.

We’re leaning toward a jungle trek starting from Ketambe—it seems nice in itself, but it feels a bit repetitive. All the guides offer the same packages: stops at fixed camps, you settle in, walk around the camp, eat, sleep, then move on the next day for 2-3 hours with the same routine. After all my research, I feel like I’ve already seen it all because every guide and tourist posts the same photos (hollow tree, hot springs, etc.).

Anyway, do you know of a guide or agency that offers a *real* trek (meaning you walk all day until you find a spot for the night, from a starting point A to an endpoint B) in an area that’s a little different from where everyone else goes? (Gunung Leuser or similar, though for transport and time reasons, I’d ideally like to stay in northern Sumatra.)

Hi, I’m reaching out to the community because I can’t find the answer to my question. I’d like to book a flight from Barcelona to Singapore, then from Singapore to Bali with Singapore Airlines. When transferring from Singapore to Bali, does the airline handle the baggage transfer between the two flights? Or do we have to collect our luggage, go through security again, check in, etc.?

Hi fellow travelers! I’ve been reading so much conflicting info—I’m totally lost. I’m planning a nearly 4-week trip (25 days) in Indonesia. I’ll arrive in Denpasar, then travel around (Bali + some islands). We’ll leave with layovers in Jakarta (1 day + 1 night) and Kuala Lumpur (2 days + 2 nights). My question is: is a B1 visa enough? It says "single entry" on it. Does that mean just one entry into Bali, or can I also pass through Jakarta with it? Can anyone clarify this for me, please? THANKS

As part of a four-month world trip with our kids (ages 6, 12, and 13), we’ll be spending four weeks in Indonesia. Choosing destinations is so tough because everything is just so appealing! We’ll be spending some time on Java and will likely make a "quick trip" to Borneo for the orangutan reserve. We also want to experience Bali’s culture and the small islands of the Lesser Sundas, with their incredible marine life... but which ones should we prioritize? For a few days of diving and relaxation, do you think we should go for Nusa Penida, the Gili Islands, or Moyo Island? Is Sumbawa complicated to explore? Is it worth taking the time to visit? Can it be crossed by car to then reach Komodo National Park? Anyway, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Our goal is to avoid overly touristy spots (but not places that feel too unsafe with the kids), to discover local culture and villages, and to be amazed both underwater and above. I’m spending a few days in Singapore, which I love. I was thinking about maybe heading to Tioman, but it’s a real hassle with the bus and ferry times—plus, you pretty much have to stay overnight in Mersing for safety. I also looked into Bintan, which seems pretty nice. You need a visa since it’s in Indonesia, and it’s a big, beautiful island. There’s even a Club Med, so it must be a decent spot. Tioman looks stunning in videos, but yeah… I’m still going back and forth on this one!

Given that we won’t have any luggage to collect and our connecting flight (Transnusa) also seems to be at Terminal 3, do you think a 8:10 PM flight will work?

I’ve read a lot that 4 hours is recommended, but since we’re not changing terminals and don’t have checked bags, I’m thinking the formalities should still be manageable, right?

Hi, I’m traveling with my 13-year-old son in June and July 2025 for 6 weeks—2 weeks in Flores and 4 in Sulawesi. I don’t want a super "roots" trip because long transport times eat up too much time, so I’d prefer to use only private or shared drivers whenever possible since I’ve read that public transport really slows you down. That said, I don’t want to hire the same driver for the whole trip because I think it’d be way over budget.

My first question is about transport times and approximate costs. I’d like to double-check the times I’ve seen because it’s not clear to me whether they’re for private vehicles or public buses: - Labuan Bajo – Denge (Wae Rebo): 5–6 hours ???? - Denge – Ruteng: 3 hours ???? - Ruteng – Bajawa: 4 hours ???? - Bajawa – Moni (Kelimutu Volcano): 3.5 hours ???? - Moni – Koka Beach: 1.5 hours ???? - Maumere – Koka Beach: 2 hours ????

My second question is about the Maumere–Makassar ferry. It’s impossible to find a clear answer—PELNI’s website shows only about 2 ferries per month, but Rome2Rio mentions a daily departure (with a return the next day, like the Labuan Bajo–Makassar route, I assume). I’d really like to avoid flying since it’s so expensive on this route.

My third question: I’ve read that flight tickets are more expensive when bought from France than from Indonesia. Has anyone else heard this?

We’re in Indonesia right now, currently in Bali, and we’re heading to Sulawesi for a month. We’ll land in Makassar and are thinking of taking a domestic flight to Manado so we can ideally rent a car there and then drive back down to Makassar on our own. We plan to spend about two weeks in North Sulawesi and the remaining two weeks in West/South Sulawesi.

Do you think it’s doable to travel independently like this, or is it better to stick with buses/taxis?

Any good tips for renting a vehicle? Where to pick up and drop off, road conditions, etc.?

Hi everyone! I’m planning a little trip to Indonesia for my 40th birthday. My tickets are already booked, and I arrive in Bali on the evening of March 26. I saw that Nyepi is on the 29th, so I decided to leave Bali and come back later.

I’ve made arrangements to go to Nusa Penida, but they observe Nyepi there too! So I’m thinking of leaving Nusa Penida on the evening of March 28 and would like to visit southern Lombok (especially Gili Gede and Ekas). My issue is that I can only find fast boats to Bangsal (the north of the island). Do you know if there are any transport options to southern Lombok (like Kuta Lombok)? In this southern region, do you have any great tips? I’m looking for places to go, but also drivers to take us around and hotels.
