Long layover in Toronto and Niagara Falls

hi everyone, I’m asking for advice from those who know the area well I’m thinking of taking a little gamble and I’d love your opinion—I’ll have an 8-hour layover at Toronto airport I was thinking of making a quick trip to Niagara Falls! booking a round-trip taxi—3 hours of driving there and back, 3 hours to get out of and back into the airport that leaves us 2 hours on site! I know it’s a stretch, but do you think it’s doable? thanks in advance Cécile

Did you realize your plan involves a 250 km trip... by taxi?.. The Toronto taxi cost estimator site gives (round trip) - $500.00. Your 3-hour drive estimate is *very* optimistic.

Hey, Is it doable?? No hesitation here—definitely not!! When you say you have an 8-hour layover, are you calculating from the arrival time of your first flight in Toronto to the departure time of your second flight? Because if that’s the case, I can assure you it won’t *actually* be 8 hours! The time it takes to get off the first plane and check in for the second one... you won’t have 8 hours left!!

Another thing to consider: the road between Toronto and Niagara Falls is often jammed (unless it’s *dead* of night), so the travel time could be longer than expected!!

Bottom line—if you *really* want to see Niagara Falls during your layover, you’d need to switch flights for a longer connection!

A great and realistic answer.

Hey, Just a quick reply 😛 "inspired" by personal experience!! During my trip to Guatemala, I had a 5-hour layover in Panama and looked into visiting the Canal locks (on an organized tour). The tour said a 3-hour layover was enough to "board." I hesitated and eventually thought, "5 hours might be cutting it close," and I’m glad I did…

A mistake in estimating time could end up costing a lot, and it wouldn’t be the agency selling this tour that would’ve refunded your flight ticket.

Thanks everyone for your replies! I kinda expected that! So I’ll take your advice and just do a little trip around Toronto! Cheers, Cécile😉

Hello,

I’m reviving the topic: is an 18h30 layover doable? We’re traveling as a family. We’ve already done a long layover without an overnight stay in Montreal to visit family when our oldest was 1.5 years old.

09:40 Brussels Airport (BRU) 11:40 Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ)

18h 35min layover in Toronto (YYZ) Overnight layover

06:15+1 Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) 09:35+1 Cancun International Airport (CUN)

Time-wise, I’m thinking that with the time difference, taking the early flight the next day should be manageable. Physiologically, it’ll be 17:40. So a 6:00 AM departure is doable. We’d return to the airport hotel around 19:00 for bedtime (23:00 physiological time).

For the trip itself, it’ll take about 3 hours round-trip (on a Friday). We’d stay on-site for 2-3 hours.
