First trip to South Africa: what itinerary?

Hello forum,

We’re a family of 4 adults (2 grown daughters) planning our first trip to South Africa for 3 weeks in August 2025, traveling independently. I’ve been drawing inspiration from several posts on the forum. I’d like to book our flight tickets and nights in Kruger Park as soon as possible since that’s the most urgent part to finalize, if I understood correctly.

Here’s a first draft of our itinerary (with lots of unknowns about what there’ll be to see/do in Eswatini, Lesotho, Durban, etc.—I feel like the Lesotho leg involves a lot of driving).

I’d really appreciate input from the experts to help us craft a great trip. Thanks in advance!

Jobourg isn’t worth it—better to head straight on and stop along the way to Blyde.

There are plenty of guest houses in South Africa; I’d avoid Airbnbs if I were you.

Just a heads-up: it’ll be winter in South Africa, so swimming might not be the best idea.

Since I don’t know much about the rest of your trip, I won’t comment.

Good evening,

Could you clarify days 14 to 17 (Lesotho/Drakensberg)?

I agree with Régis—unless you have a specific reason to stay, you can leave Johannesburg after picking up the car and do your shopping in the next town on the way to Blyde. That way, you can split the long drive planned for Day 3. Similarly, on the way back, you could spend your last night about an hour from the airport after coming back from the south.

Hi there,

Like my fellow travelers, I’d recommend hitting the road as soon as you arrive.

You could spend your first night around Middelburg or even Dullstroom if you’re feeling up to it after a night on the plane.

I’d cut one night from Kruger since you’re planning 2 nights in Imfolozi. I’d add that night to St. Lucia instead.

For the mountainous regions, it’ll be winter. Nights can get chilly.

Otherwise, apart from Lesotho, your itinerary is pretty classic—perfect for a first trip.

You’ll find some extra tips and ideas in this travel journal.

For Lesotho, check here (but it’s 4x4 only).

BBs (bed-and-breakfasts) are everywhere in South Africa—Airbnb seems a bit unnecessary.

Happy planning! !

Good evening

Our friend Rjulie is modest but already full of good advice (great tips)

If you're arriving from France and get there early... 8:30?... I’d suggest leaving Johannesburg. (Just my opinion, but it’s YOUR trip) For me, two stops not too far away: Dullstroom (Crichtley Hackle Lodge via the web) and Waterval Boven. In Swaziland (Eswatini)... why Mbabane? Milwane, Hlane, and Phophonyane can serve as good stopovers. Maputaland = St Lucia? Somewhere in that area? (I love this region and keep going back, again and again this year). Hluhluwe, yes, in theory... I have a little original idea... I wouldn’t go to Lesotho... I’d choose a spot in the Drakensberg instead...

That’s my initial take...

Yes, Airbnb in South Africa???? Personally, I’ve never used it. Either direct bookings or possibly via Booking.com during Covid for cancellations. I’m heading back to South Africa this autumn... directly with the locals... I’ve never been disappointed.

Thanks to all of you for these quick and insightful replies!

It’s true that I have a bit of an Airbnb reflex in France, but I’ll look into guesthouses and B&Bs in South Africa. I mainly mentioned that to distinguish them from the Rest Camps inside the parks.

I thought the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg was at least worth a visit, but I’ll take your advice and hit the road directly on Day 2 to shorten the leg to Blyde River Canyon.

I’m also cutting out Lesotho—it added a big mountainous loop, and this way I can spend more time in Kruger and St. Lucia.

For swimming (not necessarily in the sea), I know it’ll be austral winter, but I thought daytime temperatures would be a bit above 20°C (except in the mountains). Am I wrong?

With the same trip length, I now have 2 unassigned days. I’d love your thoughts: - Is it worth adding an extra day at Blyde River Canyon and/or in Eswatini or somewhere else?

Or should I just shorten the trip by 2 days? That might lower the cost of the flight tickets.

Here’s the updated itinerary: Day 1: Departure from Paris Day 2: Morning – Early arrival, pick up car, shopping, first half of the drive to Blyde River Canyon (250 km - 3h). Night near Dullstroom (1/1) Day 3: Morning – Second half of the drive to Blyde River Canyon (250 km - 3h30). Night near Blyde River Canyon (1/1) Day 4: Morning – Drive to Northern Kruger (250 km - 4h). Night in Rest Camp (1/2) Day 5: Night in Rest Camp (2/2) Day 6: Morning – Drive to Central Kruger (200 km - 3h). Night in Rest Camp (1/2) Day 7: Night in Rest Camp (2/2) Day 8: Morning – Drive to Southern Kruger (150 km - 3h). Night in Rest Camp (1/2) Day 9: Night in Rest Camp (2/2) Day 10: Morning – Drive to Milwane or elsewhere (Eswatini) (250 km - 4h). Night (1/1) Day 11: Morning – Drive to Hluhluwe-Umfolozi (300 km - 4h). Night in Rest Camp (1/2) Day 12: Night in Rest Camp (2/2) Day 13: Morning – Drive to St. Lucia (60 km - 1h). Night near St. Lucia (1/2) Day 14: Night near St. Lucia (2/2) Day 15: Morning – First half of the drive to Drakensberg (250 km - 3h). Night near Gluckstadt (1/1) Day 16: Morning – Second half of the drive to Drakensberg (200 km - 3h). Night near Drakensberg (1/2) Day 17: Night near Drakensberg (2/2) Day 18: ? Day 19: ? Day 20: Morning – Drive to Johannesburg suburbs (300 km - 3h) Day 21: Morning – Drive to the airport

The plan works well, but I’d still do it differently. 😏

Actually, Day 2 is almost a wasted day. Three hours of driving and not much else (aside from picking up the car and doing some shopping, which should take max two hours total). I know you’ll have a night flight behind you, but there’s no time difference and you should be fine. Plus, I’d tend to want to finish with Kruger, which for many is the highlight of a first trip to South Africa. Why not do the loop in the opposite direction?

My advice: pick up the car, do some shopping, and drive towards Golden Gate Highlands NP, to the south. That’s about 3h30 of driving, and the park (which can be visited in a few hours) is a great introduction in terms of landscapes and already some wildlife to see (antelopes, zebras, baboons, birds...). Then, continue to Lesotho and/or Drakensberg, going counterclockwise. I’d only stay one night in Hluhluwe/Imfolozi, but that’s personal.

For the rest, I agree with the others’ advice. Jo’burg has a few highlights, like the Apartheid Museum, but I’d skip it too for a first trip.
MI Michel85200 Globetrotter ·
Hi

The counter-clockwise route makes sense, and I’d say "why not that way" since I’ve done it before.

After that, you really don’t do much right after arrival... but maybe you just need to "get used to" the vibe. Head to Golden Gate (if you do, try accommodations up the mountain because the view is... incredibly beautiful in good weather), yeah... I did it right after landing, and it works, but it depends on your arrival time in Joburg... But on the way back, you’re always a bit stressed about missing your flight... so... so we often choose a stop not too far from the airport... Which means, but this is just my opinion, that the first-day break becomes the last-day break on African soil... in Dullstroom...

This is just my opinion, not my trip

Hi there

As far as I'm concerned, I wouldn't shorten it.

But be careful—the kilometers in South Africa always feel longer than you think... So I’d take these days to relax more... Where? Drakensberg, St Lucia? I just found out where Glückstadt is! Near Vryheid.

Hello,

We traveled this summer with our three older kids. As mentioned earlier, watch out for the kilometers. We were advised to be at our accommodations before nightfall, which means by 6 PM—the days are short. You should spend two nights near Blyde River Canyon to have a full day to enjoy it. We only spent one night in Eswatini and kind of regretted it because we felt like we were just driving the whole time. We really loved biking in the Milwane Game Sanctuary—it was a nice change after days of driving in Kruger. Don’t forget to account for border crossing times (between 30 and 60 minutes since you have to get out of the car, but it’s a cool experience). We never went swimming, even though we’d booked guesthouses with pools, because even if the daytime temperatures were nice, it dropped quickly in the evening. We preferred to visit just one spot in the Drakensberg because we were tired of driving. Instead of the Mandela Museum in Joburg, we visited the "Capture Site," where Mandela was arrested, on the road between Durban and Joburg. It’s a modern museum and very informative.

The advantage of traveling in August is that it’s a low-tourist month, and except in the parks, we had no trouble finding accommodations (we even booked our last nights in the Drakensberg the day before!).

Have a great trip!

but I was expecting temperatures a bit higher than 20°C during the day

Yeah, it can get significantly warmer than 20°C in Kruger during the day. Even over 30°C...

By the coast too. (Over 20°C).

Is it worth spending an extra day at Blyde River Canyon and/or in Eswatini or elsewhere?

Why not Ithala? (See the link in my previous message)

I don’t think Eswatini is the most interesting part of the trip. You’ll spend a good afternoon at Blyde and a good part of the next day. That’s enough, I think.

Hi there, I’ve been digging through the depths of the South African web for recent reviews on Ithala. Basically, after hesitating, I decided not to go—for now. I’ll be in the area in October. Accommodations are described as pretty run-down, and the game sightings as less frequent. Can anyone confirm this info? Thanks for your feedback and thoughts! Michel

Hi Michel,

The accommodations were a bit dated but the welcome was fantastic (2018).

For the park, it's more of a landscape park than an animal one, even though there are some. Don’t choose it as a replacement for Kruger!

I really liked it.

The full review is on the link in my first post.

Thanks, the trip has already started! 🙂

I think the idea of doing the loop the other way and finishing in Kruger is excellent—I’ll do that.

With a stop at Golden Gate Highlands on the first day.

For Glukstadt, I included this town just to avoid a huge leg between Drakensberg and St. Lucia.

It’s a bit like Dullstroom between Blyde River Canyon and Johannesburg.

Is there maybe a better option?

Here’s how it looks:

Hi there, Dulstrom isn’t too far from Joburg. Depending on your departure time for the return trip.

AL AlexDeFrance ·
Yeah, it's true that by getting up early, I can do the last night in Dullstroom—I’ll do that. And so, I’ll add a night somewhere else along the route, probably in the Drakensberg, I think.
BL Blancond Regular ·
Hi Alex, 2 notes: It depends where you’ll be in the Drakensberg, but the one-stage drive to St Lucia is pretty doable (we did the reverse trip to Giant’s Castle in 2023, leaving early in the morning, and we had time for a hike in the afternoon). At Mlilwane, I think it’s worth spending 2 nights there. The reserve is really nice and can be explored on foot, which is a great break from all the driving. We did two walks—one in the morning, one in the afternoon—with a little break at the camp restaurant, where the prices were unbeatable. Jacques
