Hi there, We’re heading to Malaysia for 10 days (landing in Singapore). We’ll spend 4 or 5 days on Tioman, but what after? I’m really struggling to find an itinerary or a second spot to settle in—any suggestions?

Hi there, I just read through your forum history since 2008—it’s basically "I take, I take, I take, I take... but never give back."

hi everyone, the "classics" of Malaysia are the Cameron Highlands, Langkawi, Malacca, and Taman Negara. So around Mersing, I don’t know what to visit

Hi there, Watch out on Tioman—sensitive skin can take a beating. The sandflies are brutal! Make sure you’ve got strong repellent 😷

Good evening,

As mentioned earlier, there’s really nothing special to do or see near Tioman. And 10 days is quite short for the "classic" Malaysia itinerary. Where are you flying back from? If your return flight is from Singapore, it depends on your preferences, but you could do Tioman → Melaka → Singapore, or Tioman → Taman Negara → Singapore. But you’ll lose a lot of time during transfers.

Hi there,

We’re also planning a trip to Tioman this summer with my wife, our 10-year-old son, and a friend who’ll be joining with her 10-year-old daughter. We don’t plan to go to Kuantan, but it seems like it might be a destination worth checking out not too far from Mersing? Not sure if it’s worth the detour. Also, we’re thinking of heading to Malacca from KL and then making our way to Mersing from Malacca. Does anyone know if that’s an easy trip to do by bus for a group of 5 with 2 kids?

hi, when traveling from Melaka to Mersing, if you pass through Kluang, the road should be pretty smooth. For comparison, if you want a route that’s not straightforward, it’s the one crossing Pahang state—basically the road toward Taman Negara—since there are lots of detours and curves. But going through Kluang means less elevation, so it should be easier to drive

Hi there,

For the first question, I don’t have the answer—I’m not familiar with Kuantan. As for bus travel, it’s super easy in Malaysia. You can get from point A to point B without any hassle, especially since your stops are pretty standard. The country has a really well-developed network, and everything can be sorted out on the spot. Either head straight to the bus stations to grab tickets for your next destination or book online—there are a few apps for that. I can’t remember their names since my trip to Malaysia was a while ago, but I do recall it was all very straightforward and stress-free. That said, with 5 people and during peak season, it might be wise to book your tickets a few days in advance for the next leg of your trip.

Thanks for this valuable advice! I’ve heard a lot about sandflies on Tioman. Is that specific to this island? Is there a time of year when it’s worse, or is it like that all the time? Any recommendations for protection?

Thanks in advance!

It does seem like Tioman is more specifically affected by this issue, but personally, we didn’t get any bites. Neither on Tioman nor on any other island, actually. I think it’s just the luck of the draw, unfortunately. Maybe avoid lying on the sand for too long.

getting to Mersing from Malacca. Does anyone know if it’s an easy trip by bus for a group of 5 with 2 kids?

hi there,

no problem with this route, but as others mentioned, it’s best to book your seats in advance. You can use sites like busonlineticket.com or others. I used it for a month, including for the Malacca–Mersing route. You can pick your seats on the bus to stay together.

otherwise, on Tioman in June, didn’t see any sandflies! 😊

Thanks to everyone for your replies! Indeed, 10 days is both short and long at the same time…
