Hi there,

I’m thinking of (re)visiting Thailand in a few months, and my planned itinerary includes an overnight train ride.

My goal is to book a first-class compartment, so I should reserve it as soon as possible...

Which website (reliable, please!) can I use to make this reservation, and are e-tickets available?

Thanks!😊

This is exactly what I was looking for! 😉

From what I understand, Bangkok is Krung Thep Aphiwat.

Thanks again.

Hi there,

Yes, absolutely, that's the new Bangkok train station. You can get there by metro.

Personally, I downloaded the State Railways of Thailand app. You just need to create an account. On the computer, I can't book anymore, but it works fine with the app.

Just so you know, reservations only open 2 months in advance.

Good luck!

The metro? To get to Khao San where I usually stay? Don’t even think about it!!

I tried out this new station last February. Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, Bangkok’s new main railway terminal, near the old station called Bang Sue, and now the departure and arrival point for most long-distance train services in Thailand since... January 19, 2023... No way around it! But I was so nervous about this station—it was my first time arriving there. It’s far, roughly in the same area as Mo Chit bus terminal and Chatuchak Market.

I spent ages searching online for how to get to Khao San from this station. There’s no special bus like the ones to the airports. The MRT doesn’t go anywhere convenient for Khao San, my train arrived at 6:25 PM, night was falling, and I was alone. City buses at night? Forget it—I wouldn’t have a clue how to navigate in the dark!!!

I read and read every site I could find, but the only option seemed to be taking a taxi.

The new train station is a nightmare. No signs, not even an "Exit" when you get off the train, and the taxi exit isn’t marked... You have to go down a floor—I just followed other passengers. And no staff anywhere in the station to ask for help. Not like the airport, where there are uniformed staff in the halls. Here, you’re just searching... huge, wide corridors and massive halls, all gray metal—it’s ugly.

I finally found an information desk, but much, much later, way farther on, almost at the exit doors. That’s when they told me taxis were at exit gate No. 10. The MRT is just before that—it’s marked with the logo. There was a *long* line to buy tickets at the machine. Lots of Thais were taking the metro.

To get a taxi, you have to go outside to gate 10, and immediately they jump on you—you have to negotiate, it’s all about how you look. Once you agree, you have to cross the street—they’re parked on the other side. I don’t know where the buses are. I didn’t look since I was busy negotiating with several taxi drivers at once. No question of using the meter—obviously, I asked first, but they just laughed. One guy told me, "The taxi-meter? It’s me!"... I managed to get it down to 300 baht when they were asking for 400, even though the ride was barely 10–15 minutes. I think I did okay for a taxi that, given the distance, should’ve been under 200 baht in my opinion. But it was nighttime, around 6:30 PM.

So, good luck! After this experience, I’m really hesitant to take the train to or from Bangkok (even though I used to do it all the time). Will the city connections improve? If there were a special bus like the ones at the airports—super efficient and stopping in the Khao San area—that’d be fine. But for now, it’s taxis all the way, just like it used to be when leaving Don Muang.

Hi,

Personally, I don’t have any issues—it’s less easy than the first time, but you’ll manage. From Khao San Road, it’s true it’s not simple, but I haven’t been to that neighborhood in ages. I book accommodation the night before near the metro and head straight there.
