Hi there, I’m leaving on March 4th for Australia from Réunion Island, landing in Perth, then a road trip down to Melbourne before flying out to Vietnam on April 15th. I’d like to visit Perth and the surrounding area, then head southwest to Margaret River, Albany, Esperance, and back to Perth to catch a flight to Adelaide. From there, I’ll make my way to Melbourne. 1/ What do you think of this itinerary? 2/ For flights, are there any domestic airlines worth prioritizing for good prices? 3/ I’m planning to rent a car after exploring Perth and the area—I’m traveling solo. Any rental companies you’d recommend, as well as nice hotels, B&Bs, or hostels? 4/ Any tips, good deals, or info are welcome—don’t hesitate to share! Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

1. Yes, I think it’s a really beautiful route. You can take about two weeks for the Western Australia part. It’s usually a great season for this region—I went in April and the weather was amazing. Perth is nice but not very big, and I actually preferred Fremantle, which could be a good starting base. Then, you can take a nice loop south to Esperance and head back inland. After that, plan at least ten days for the trip between Adelaide and Melbourne, or even more if you add Kangaroo Island and want to spend some time in Melbourne itself. For hiking and wildlife, consider the Grampians, or even heading east of Melbourne to Wilsons Promontory.

2. For domestic flights, there are really only three main options: Qantas (the most expensive), Virgin (mid-range), and Jetstar (a low-cost carrier). Personally, I don’t see much point in choosing Qantas over Virgin. That said, Jetstar does have more delays and cancellations than the others, but I find their customer service isn’t too bad—you can handle a lot via chat. I usually fly with Jetstar. But if you do choose them, I’d recommend not having too tight a schedule so you don’t stress over minor delays.

3. There’s a low-cost company called "No Birds" that I’ve used several times in Sydney, and they also operate in Perth—I’ve always been really happy with them. They don’t fly to Adelaide or Melbourne, though. Sixt or Thrifty usually seem to have the best rental prices.

4. For the Adelaide to Melbourne stretch, you might consider Kangaroo Island, but I’ve heard from a lot of travelers who were a bit disappointed because they didn’t feel like they got to enjoy it fully. It seems small, but you really need at least 2 or 3 days—otherwise, it’s not worth it in my opinion.

Happy travels!

Hi there, Thanks so much for this useful info. My departure was a bit chaotic after Cyclone Garance hit La Réunion—I’ll be in Perth this Wednesday, then Fremantle. Until March 21st, I’m exploring the southwest coast: Margaret River, Cape Leeuwin, Albany, Esperance, then heading back inland to Perth. On March 22nd, I’ll take a Jetstar flight from Perth to Adelaide. After that, I’m planning to visit Kangaroo Island, then drive the Great Ocean Road and finish in Melbourne by April 15th. Thanks again!
