We're planning to go at the end of November/beginning of December to visit (with a rental car) and hike on La Palma and El Hierro for 15 full days, including 1 day for inter-island ferry transfers. What’s the best split between the two islands—8 days on La Palma and 6 on El Hierro, or even more time for La Palma? Should we have one or two home bases on La Palma? Thanks for your tips! Annie

Hi Annie,

I’ve just returned from 15 days on La Gomera with a rental car, and I didn’t visit La Palma or El Hierro. But I’ll share a tip since we’d considered both islands too, and our experience on La Gomera might help.

It was often said that La Gomera could be done in two or three days. We spent 16 days there and still didn’t see everything. After that, it really depends on your travel style: some like to take their time and explore thoroughly, while others prefer to move faster.

La Palma is much larger than La Gomera, so in my opinion, two weeks could easily be spent just on that island—especially since I’ve seen there’s a lot to do there. El Hierro is the smallest of the Canary Islands, but at my pace, I’m sure I could spend one or two weeks there. Some think two days is enough...

So it really depends on your interests, but if you stick with visiting both islands, maybe 9 or 10 days for La Palma and 4 or 5 for El Hierro.
