3-week road trip in the American West

Hey everyone!

So, I'm in the middle of planning a 3-week road trip, and of course, I have a ton of questions. But first, maybe I should start with the basics:

When: July 5–28, 2025. Who: 4 people (2 teens and 2 adults). How: Flight tickets already booked (LH and United).

Where (overnights): 07/05: Arrival in SF. Night in SF. 07/06: SF. 07/07: SF. 07/08: Early departure? for Yosemite (Mariposa) – question 1. 07/09: Yosemite. 07/10: Mammoth Lake? (Accommodation in the area? Or somewhere else like 2 nights in Death Valley?) – question 2. 07/11: Death Valley. 07/12: LV. 07/13: LV. 07/14: Zion. 07/15: Bryce Canyon. 07/16: Bryce Canyon. 07/17: Moab. 07/18: Moab. 07/19: Moab. 07/20: Monument Valley. 07/21: Page. 07/22: Grand Canyon (better to stay 2 nights in Page or Grand Canyon?) – question 3. 07/23: Grand Canyon. 07/24: Kingman. 07/25: LA. 07/26: LA. 07/27: LA. 07/28: Return to France.

And question 4: For the car rental, I think it’s better to pick it up right when we arrive (to save time). But once we get to LA, should we drop it off at the airport or earlier to avoid being stuck with it (and paying extra for parking)? (We’re staying near Venice Beach for now.)

Anyway, if you spot any other inconsistencies, let me know! But I think it should work—I’ve already read 5 or 6 travel journals, so I’m feeling pretty set. :)

Right now, I’m deep into researching the rental car. I’m tempted to go for the Tahoe, but I’m not sure which site to use... So far, it’s hovering around 2000 €—quite the budget!

For the car, I recommend Alamo—they consistently offer a 20% discount for the USA. Their rates are pretty good. With 4 people in the car, definitely go for a large vehicle—it’ll be much more comfortable and let you tackle a few dirt roads without any issues. Pick up and drop off the car at the airport.

Here’s what I suggest:

07/05: Arrival in SF. Night in SF 07/06: SF 07/07: Early departure for Yosemite – Visit Mariposa Grove and Glacier Point 07/08: Yosemite – Short hike/walk in Yosemite, then hit the road in the afternoon to explore Tioga Pass – Spend the night on the other side near Lee Vining If you don’t arrive too late in Lee Vining, you can check out Mono Lake for sunset. 07/09: Head to Bodie! Then drive to Death Valley—just be warned, it’ll be *very* hot!... Enjoy the sand dunes at Stovepipe Wells in the evening. It’ll be a bit cooler and magical at sunset. I’d recommend staying near Furnace Creek so you’re close to Stovepipe Wells. 07/10: Death Valley – In the morning, go to Zabriskie Point for sunrise. After Badwater... All you’ll want to do next is cool off in the 104°F heat of Las Vegas ;D It can get up to 122°F in Death Valley in summer. Be careful not to wander too far from the car without water. Head toward Vegas. (If you have time, take a detour through Beatty and Area 51 toward Armagosa Valley. If you have even more time, a quick detour to Big Dune south of Beatty. Evening in Vegas. 07/11: LV 07/12: I’d leave for Valley of Fire, then spend the night near St. George. Sunset at Snow Canyon State Park. 07/13: Zion – It’ll be *super* crowded at Zion. I can help more with your visit if you’d like—it depends on whether you’re hikers or not... 07/14: In the morning, stop at Canyon Overlook Trail on your way out of Zion. Short, easy hike with an incredible view. The drive to Bryce Canyon is really nice—you’ll go through Red Canyon. Late afternoon in Bryce Canyon—perfect time for a short hike without it being too hot. 07/15: Bryce Canyon – I’d spend the morning in Bryce Canyon again, then take the road to Capitol Reef. Scenic Byway 12 is gorgeous. Stop at Calf Creek Falls if you’re up for a short hike. Stay the night in Capitol Reef. 07/16: Leave Capitol Reef—do Hickman Bridge, plus some great views near Cainesville (I can give more details). Night in Moab. 07/17: Moab – Arches 07/18: Moab – Canyonlands. In the evening, head toward Monument Valley to save time. 07/19: Monument Valley – You’ll need a few hours to visit, unless you want to spend the night there. 07/20: Page – Spend 2 days in Page. There’s *so* much to see—I could keep you busy for a week ;) 07/21: Page – Late afternoon, head to the Grand Canyon for sunset at the first viewpoint (Desert View Watchtower). Night in Grand Canyon Village or Tusayan. 07/22: Grand Canyon – One day is *plenty*. 07/23: Williams – Sedona – Hackberry General Store – Kingman 07/24: Detour to Oatman on Route 66 on your way to LA. 07/25: LA 07/26: LA 07/27: Return to France.

It’s not perfect, but you’re going to have an amazing time. I’m happy to tweak this if you’d like. ;)

A car is essential in the USA, even in Los Angeles or San Francisco. You’ll get around faster. Be careful not to leave anything visible in the car in San Francisco—car break-ins are common there...

Hi Usafan, for a round trip like you described so well, what’s the approximate budget, not including the flight? Vehicle, hotel, visits? Thanks in advance! Francis

Wow, thanks so much! I’ll work on the details now and start looking for accommodations for a second round of tweaks coming next week. Hiking-wise, it’s my thing (the family less so—but they’re going along ). 15-20 km is doable in a day, but I could easily go up to 50 km.

Car: Just booked (P11 24) through Alamo (via Avis)—a Chevrolet Tahoe (I’m almost at 2000 € ). I’ll keep an eye out for promotions; from what I’ve read, you can sometimes lower the price by a quarter if you’re lucky. As for the airport, I was worried about extra fees in SF and LA, but I’ll check for cheaper parking options. I plan not to leave anything in the car in those cities, only during transfers.

Other notes: 1- Yosemite: The recommendation is to do one night instead of two? (So, add one night between St. George, between LV and Zion?) 2- Death Valley: Got it—Furnace Creek it is. 3- Monument Valley: Just booked at "The View" hotel 🏴‍☠️. Read there’s not much around… it’s pricey, but it’s the closest. And I wanted to catch the sunset. The night of 07/20 is set. 4- Grand Canyon: I see there aren’t really any affordable hotels in the village or Tusayan… I’ll expand my search. 5- Page vs. Grand Canyon: Okay, so two nights in Page instead of the Grand Canyon.

I’ll be back :) Thanks! !

It all depends on what you're planning to do, the time of year, and how you organize things. There's no one-size-fits-all answer. - Car: I’m at 2000 € for a 7-seater - You’ll need to add gas - Hotels: I’ve started running simulations—between 100 and 300 € per night (for 4 people) - Food: It depends if you grab sandwiches, eat at restaurants, or hit fast food. Costs can add up fast, but my estimate is 180 €/day for 4 - Activities: Again, it depends on what you want to do. You’ll need the America the Beautiful pass ($80), and I haven’t run the numbers yet, but I’m guessing at least 1000–2000 €—unless I’m way off—especially with Universal in LA for my teens.

With that, you can crunch the numbers :) But overall, it’s not cheap at all.

Yes, you're right to keep an eye on prices regularly. Anyway, you can cancel the reservation for free and book another cheaper one. Last year, I saved 400 € that way.

As for the itinerary, I suggested what I did, but it’s up to you to adjust it as you see fit.

I really think it’s worth taking advantage of the Tioga Pass and getting closer the next day to visit the small town of Bodie.

I suggested St. George as a break, but honestly, I think it’s definitely worth spending time at Valley of Fire. This little park is gorgeous. So, the logical next step was to head toward St. George rather than going back to Las Vegas.

After that, there are *thousands* of things to see… There’s a beautiful hike near St. George, but if you’re going to Zion the next day, you won’t have time to do everything.

If you love hiking, there are two *exceptional* hikes in Zion:

Angel’s Landing And The Narrows.

But there will be *a lot* of people in the summer.

Yes, the hotel in Monument Valley is *very* expensive, but the view is incredible.

For the Grand Canyon, it’s the same—hotels are pricey. But I *really* recommend staying at one of the two spots I mentioned. If you look further out, you’ll end up near Williams, and it’s still an hour’s drive to get back to the Grand Canyon. At Grand Canyon Village or Tusayan, you’ll be right in the heart of the Grand Canyon.

In Page, there’s plenty to do around there. And if I can suggest a second night, there’s Lake Powell, Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon, and if you *really* want to treat yourself, head to Wire Pass Trail on All American Road. You can also try the lottery for The Wave…

Another option: Toadstool Hoodoos Trail…

Basically, just search “things to do in Page, AZ” on Google, and you’ll see there’s enough to keep you busy for weeks.

Hello

What Usafan is suggesting works really well:

Staying in Lee Vining after Yosemite is a great alternative (that’s what I’m doing next September).

It’s better to spend 2 nights in Page and 1 at the Grand Canyon, which you can visit in less than a day.

Using a car in San Francisco—where parking is relatively tricky and pretty expensive—is worth thinking twice about. Public transport is really well developed (unlike in LA). A 3-day pass is $31, so it’s worth comparing the savings against the cost of a car. (Maybe your hotel includes free parking?)

There’s no need to spend too much time at Valley of Fire if you’re making a detour. This gorgeous little park can be visited fairly quickly in summer since the most interesting hikes are closed between May and September, which is super frustrating...

For the car rental, I’m not seeing any significantly better rates.
Cédric.
