Avec ma copine nous avons tellement apprécié la Thaïlande que nous y retournons cette année.
Venons en à ma question : cette année nous partons en mai (du 2 au 19) et le 18, jour pendant lequel nous serons à Bangkok, je fêterai mon 28ème anniversaire! 😏 Je souhaite donc vous demander conseil sur un bon restau avec les critères suivants : Nous logeons au Royal Benja, près de Nana Station si je me souviens bien, donc nous souhaiterions un restau pas trop loin ou facile d'accès (en métro ou taxi) depuis cet endroit. Nous souhaitons un restau thaï de préférence Notre budget??? C'est une sacrée question! Combien faut-il compter pour un bon restau à Bangkok sachant qu'on peut déjà manger pour 1 à 2 euros par personne??? 20 euros par personne peut-être? Bon, ce qui est sûr c'est qu'on ne mettra pas plus de 30 euros par personne.Voilou!

Nous avons déjà fait un dîner sur le Chao Praya l'an dernier et nous avions été un peu déçus par la qualité du dîner. C'était une sortie "touristique" organisée par une agence. Nous avions droit à 2 menus différents et un show thaï pendant le repas.
Est-ce que la "jonque du SHANGRILA" (nom du restaurant?) apporte quelquechose de plus?

J'avais mal lu ton message, effectivement si tu es né en mai... moi c'est Avril... Les prix sont assez cher par contre pour ce resto, compte entre 1000 et 2000 baht par personne, soit entre 25 et 50 euros en gros.
Mais si tu veut marqué le coup ça peut être sympa, tiens pour le fun des photos que j'ai pris ce jour là.

effectivement Sirocco est superbe ! 2 limites : il faut réserver à l'avance car c'est bondé TOUS les soirs et c'est très touristique maintenant. Le prix par personne à mon avis c'est plus du 2000 bahts pour un dîner d'anniversaire (avec un petit verre ou deux !).
Près du Royal Benja, des restos de charme il n'y a point. Si tu veux aller jusqu'à la station de BTS Thonglor, 2 adresses pour toi: The Face Bangkok avec une déco thaïe à tomber ou dans un genre plus populaire le Vientiane Kitchen www.vientiane-kitchen.com qui te fait d'ailleurs une réduction pour ton anniversaire ainsi qu'une jolie chanson de tout le staff lorsqu'il t'offrent un gâteau !

Comme le dit Hakun, le Sirocca c'est plutot du 2000 baths par personne.
A Bangkok il y a quelques semaines, nous avons pris un verre au sky bar du sirocco puis nous avons été diné au restaurant Riverside Terrace de l'hotel l'Oriental. Buffet à 2200 bath par personne mais vraiment buffet superbe et excellent.

Je ne sais que choisir maintenant, dans chacun des restaurants proposés je trouve quelquechose qui me plait!

Moi, je suis y allée déjà les 3 branches ci-dessus, toutes sont vraimentsympa,
Je viens de visiter la branche de Charansanitwong soi 92 qui se situe près de moi, mais très loin de toi.
J'adore cette branche parce que elle est au bord de la rivière Chao Pra Ya, et c'est aussi "Open Air"...
Les jeunes bangkokiens connaissent bien ce restaurant si sympa, est puis, la plupart des clients est thailandais, tu seras parmi des thailandais..hehe
C'est assez cher pour nous, mais pas trop cher. Ludi dernier, je suis y allée avec mon BF, on a payé environ 600 bahs pour les deux...
Là chez le tosit, on chante la musique thaie, étrangère avec un piano acoustique, ça m'impressionne toujours...
et le plus important, tu goutera la cuisine thai si délicieuse aussi...😛😛

Oui c'est vrai qu'il ne faut pas aller là pour discuter, la musique est forte mais toi en tant de ingénieur de son tu peux pas nous arranger le truc .😏😏

j'ai peur de me faire repérer dans l'escalier avant d'arriver dans la salle, tu vois ce que je veux dire ... non mais par contre, en thailande y a pas mal d'habitants rampants qui habitent les lieux, alors pour quoi pas si on doit faire dans la discrétion, et puis ce sera fait par des "locaux" en plus !😏😏😏
un resto qui ne nous a jamais déçus et dans lequel nous y dînons au moins une fois à chaque passage à bangkok :
"ban chiang" cuisine Isan dans un cadre sympa (maison en bois) accueil charmant et des tarifs tout a fait raisonnables pour un dîner (environ 800 bahts /pers.)
de nana station, aller à siam station, changer de ligne(direction saphan) et descendre à surasak . de là, continuer à pieds sur 50m vers saphan, tourner dans thanon surasak continuer sur 300m et le resto se trouve à30m sur ta droite dans le soi si wang
autre resto découvert cette année mais c'est de la cuisine vietnamienne :
"dalat" 14 sukhumvit 23, nouvelle adressse du dalat indochine qui a fermé en 2006 ; accueil charmant, maison en bois avec jardin, serveurs en tenue vietnamienne (ao dai pour les femmes et tenues traditionnelles pour les hommes dont je ne connais pas le nom) excellente cuisine et présentation ;tarifs plus élevés (compter 1000 bahts/pers.)

En effet si c'est bruyant ça ne risque pas de faire très ambiance anniversaire en tete a tete, par contre pour un autre soir pourquoi pas, surtout si barbot et d'autres confirment que c'est un bon restau. On prendra des boules Quiès c'est tout! 😏
Un resto où je n'ai jamais été déçu est le Blue Elephant (http://www.blueelephant.com/bangkok/index.html). Le cadre est vraiment agréable, la nourriture succulente et les prix corrects. Pour une occasion comme ton anniversaire, si tu les avertis à l'avance, ils t'offrent le gâteau. Le patron est un belge très sympa qui a su attirer une belle clientèle. Lors de mon dernier passage, j'ai eu le plaisir de prendre le café avec l'ambassadeur de Russie et le Prince de Chiang Mai (du moins c'est ce que la maman du patron m'a dit car je n'ai pas trouvé trace d'un prince de Chiang Mai vivant actuellement!). Ce sera en tous les cas plus thai et moins cher qu'au Sirocco où je suis allé manger des pâtes avec une entrée, un cocktail et un verre de vin le tout pour 5108, 18 bahts! Un déci de Barolo coûte 1500 bahts plus 17% de taxe et service! Bon c'est encore loin du diner de gala du 10 février qui coutait la modique somme de 1'000'000 de bahts plus les 17%! Mais là ce n'était plus dans mes moyens!

Coincé? Qu'est-ce que tu veux dire par coincé? La dernière fois j'y suis allé avec ma femme, ma belle-soeur, son mari et leur petite fille de 4 ans qui dormait en arrivant au restaurant. Le serveur a tout fait pour que la petite puisse continuer à dormir en aménageant un petit coin où elle a pu s'étendre sous la surveillance de ses parents.
La mère du patron, une dame de plus de 80 ans, m'entendant parler français, est venue à notre table pour me demander d'où je venais. On a discuté un moment puis elle m'a présenté à plusieurs personnes toutes très sympathiques.
Les serveurs étaient impeccables tout en étant très discrets.
Evidemment il vaut mieux mettre un pantalon et éviter les tongues mais comme il y a la clim c'est pas un problème. Si tu mets un jeans ça va très bien. Ils sont bcp plus cool que les restos de tous ces grands hôtels!

Dommage que ton anniversaire soit déjà passé car nous revenons de bangkok et nous avons trouvé un super restau pas très loin de Nana Station, à l'angle de Sukhumvit, soi3; le sawan restaurant; j'ai vu qu'il avait déjà été recommandé sur le forum. C'est vraiment sympa, tu manges bien dans un budget très correct et en plus tu profites d'un spectacle de danse traditionnelle. Le restau est très mignon et la vue du 5ème étage plutôt agréable.

Depuis le temps que je veux vous raconter... Ca fera l'occaz! Donc en premier lieu nous sommes allés boire un verre au Sirocco. Le prix d'un verre??? Le même que celui d'un verre à paris, voir moins encore! (environ 350 bahts le cocktail). Pour moi qui ai le vertige, je dois dire que j'étais servi : 64ème étage si ma mémoire est bonne, le bar est entouré d'une vitre qui donne directement sur le vide! Je n'ai pas pu m'approcher à moins d'un mètre! 😏 Sinon mon cocktail : un Half Moon Bay (Gin, Rum, Vodka, Midori, Sprite). Normalement je ne bois pas d'alcool, mais comme là c'était mon anniv... Hé bien je vous le recommande vivement! Ma copine avait pris un (trop classique) Mojito et elle a bien regretté après avoir goûté mon verre! 🤪
Ensuite, nous nous sommes rendus au restaurant de la terrasse du Shangri-la, le "NEXT2", conseillé par un voyage-forumeur dont je n'ai pas le nom sous la main. En tout cas un énorme MERCI à lui, nous avons adoré et le prix était plus que raisonnable. Le prix du buffet à volonté, de l'ordre de 1600 bahts/personne si mes souvenirs sont exacts. Les serveurs ont été d'une gentillesse incroyable, quand ils ont su que c'était mon anniversaire, ils m'ont chanté un "happy birthday to you" qui restera dans les annales... Je l'ai d'ailleurs en vidéo et j'essaierai de la mettre en ligne pour vous faire partager ce moment.
Niveau plats, c'était du grand délire! On ne sait que manger, c'est copieux et de bonne qualité. A noter pour les amateurs : lobster au barbecue à volonté! De quoi se rendre malade... 🤪

mais personellement, j'y suis allée deux fois et je trouve qu'il y a un petit trop de "cha-cha" autour de cet etablissement, les verres, tasses à l'entrée à vendre, sauces pas plus thai que ... bref, je suis pas contre blue elephant mais je pense qu'il en d'autres tout aussi bon et plus traditionnels finalement, trop de succés, on sait ce que ç'apporte !🤪

I didn’t plan to return to Thailand this year, but my health conditions mean it’ll be the best place for me to stay between two trips to India. The tourism setup there is so well-organized that it’s the most "comfortable" country for a short visit. Thailand feels too sanitized for my taste, and there’s too much religion, Buddha, and the King, but it’s still the best option given how my health has been evolving. I’d considered two weeks in ThaTon for hiking, but I got too sick from the burn-offs during my trips to the mountains around Chiang Rai. So I’m not sure where to go this year. Definitely not the sea, touristy spots, or the mountains with burn-offs...

In 1996, we crossed Vietnam from Saigon to Hanoi by motorbike—Minsk bikes we bought in Saigon. I haven’t been back since, and it seems like a lot has changed.
- We’re heading to the south (well, the north and center) with the family in July-August (3 people).
- Is the road network more developed now? Back then, there was only National Route 1 from south to north. I’m thinking of renting a car this time (no motorbike with the family—though in ’96, they had a Jawa sidecar for sale, and we hesitated… maybe it’s for the best).
- Is Halong Bay really something to avoid because of overtourism? Even back then, it was pretty crowded. Is there a less touristy alternative?
- We’ll be traveling from Hanoi down to Danang (the only city we didn’t stop in back in ’96). Even though it’s a bit overhyped in a Chinese-tourist kind of way (from what I’ve read), we’re only going for the beach—pure relaxation for 7 days. The beaches are stunning, and I know the South China Sea is warm like coffee.
- Then, we’ll visit Hoi An, where I stopped in ’96. It was already popular with backpackers back then, but no glowing boats or all the touristy fuss!
- After that, Hue, where I have great memories—it’s a beautiful city.
- And also the nature around Ninh Binh, followed by 2-3 days in Hanoi.
That’s the plan. I’d love to hear any tips to avoid mass tourism, and if anyone’s done this before:
- Is it possible to rent a car in Danang and drop it off in Hanoi?

I’m struggling to wrap up the end of my itinerary, even though it’s pretty straightforward (long but simple).
Last year, we did Malaysia (KL and the mainland + around Kuching).
Day 1 – Arrive in Kota Kinabalu early, stroll around town and hit the must-sees.
Day 2 – Excursion to Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, snorkeling at 3 islands.
Day 3 – Hike around Mount Kinabalu without summiting (450 per person, no way).
Day 4 – Poring Hot Springs + evening flight to Sandakan.
Day 5-6-7 – Kinabatangan River (still looking for the right guide).
Day 8 – Sepilok for the orangutans, the Sun Bear Centre, and Rainforest Discovery Centre.
Day 9 – Selingan, turtle island.
Day 10 – Head to Semporna.
Day 11-12-13-14 – Sipadan, Mabul, Kapalai.
Day 15 – Bohey Dulang.
Day 16 to Day 25: I’M STUCK.
I looked into Danum Valley, but for 3 days/2 nights, they’re quoting 650 € per person—come on, that’s ridiculous.
I checked out a detour into Indonesia (still East Borneo), but I’m having trouble deciding what would be amazing.
I read about Sangalaki + Kakaban (2 islands, 1 base) / Mahakam Delta - Kutai (orangutans and river) / Sungai Boh (Dayak Kayan) – jungle & culture.
But honestly, I’m struggling to finalize this itinerary.
If we venture that way, we’d head back to KK from Balikpapan.
For a 4-month stay in Egypt, I had ENORMOUS problems. The regulations are very bureaucratic and extremely nitpicky there. For a 4-month stay in the Philippines, I was wondering if the procedures are just as complicated? I’m bringing my cell phone with an eSIM. Should I choose a plan from Canada for use in the Philippines, or should I get a plan only once I arrive? After 30 days, do I renew with the Canadian provider I chose before leaving, or do I switch to a local company? Do I need to register my phone with the authorities in the Philippines? (That was the case in Egypt.) For the 3rd and 4th months, will it be just as simple—renewing with a Canadian or local provider—or should I expect problems?

We’re heading to Vietnam as a family on July 8th for a little over 3 weeks (north and center). We’ve only booked the first 3 nights in Hanoi, and nothing else after that. We like to decide things on the spot and go with the flow, without rushing everywhere. But I’m still a bit unsure: when heading down to the center (Hue), is it better to book the overnight trains in advance? We don’t want to take any flights while we’re there—just use the overnight train for the long trips. But I’m worried we won’t get seats if we buy the tickets on the spot, say, 2 days before. I’d love to get some feedback on our itinerary—it’s probably pretty basic! This is our second trip to Asia and our first to Indonesia. We have three kids aged 20, 18, and 12. We land in Jakarta at 4 PM, spend 3 nights/2 days there, then take the train to Yogyakarta for 3 nights/2 days, followed by the train to Surabaya for 2 nights/1 day, then the train to Bromo for 1 day/1 night, a private driver to Ijen for 2 nights/2 days, then on to Bali (Ubud) for 4 nights/3 days, followed by Gili Air for 3 nights/2 days, Senggigi (Lombok) for 2 nights, and finally 5 nights in Kuta. I’m considering cutting the 2 nights in Senggigi to just keep Kuta and extend it to 7 nights. In Lombok, I’m not sure how to get around since I’m not comfortable with scooters... Your thoughts on all of this, and any advice, are more than welcome—don’t hesitate!
For those wondering why cities like Jakarta and Surabaya: we don’t often get the chance to visit big Asian cities, so we wanted to include that discovery in our trip. The trains between Jakarta and Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Probolinggo are booked. The return flight from Lombok to Jakarta is also set. Accommodations are booked but flexible (same for the trains).

My trip’s coming up, and I’m having a bit of trouble with three bus/minivan routes. Usually, I find everything at this time of year, but this time—yikes!
Sandakan → Sepilok:
No app for this one—you just hop on bus #14 at the local terminal (pay cash on board). But where do I catch it, and where’s the stop??

From what I’ve heard, it’s the Sida Express company (great name, right? 😄).
Can’t book online, but apparently, you *have* to because there’s only one bus at 8 AM.
Where do I board, and where does it drop me off?

My girlfriend and I booked our tickets with Saudia Airlines for a trip to Thailand this summer, from July 5th to August 3rd. Given the geopolitical situation in the Middle East, we’re keeping a close eye on the news.

• Have you heard anything about possible mass cancellations or if the airline is still maintaining its routes to Asia?
• Are there any travelers who’ve recently returned who could tell us if air corridors have been changed (longer flight times)?

July 30: Makassar – sightseeing
July 31: Makassar – sightseeing + overnight bus to Rantepao
August 1–7: Tana Toraja with a guide
August 7: Tana Toraja to Tentena + visit Tentena
August 8: Early departure with a private driver to Ampana, then ferry to the Togian Islands
August 9–15: Togian Islands (2 different resorts)
August 15: Depart Togian Islands for Luwuk
August 16: Flight Luwuk to Makassar
August 17: Rammang Rammang
August 18: Stroll in Makassar, then return home

I also have a question about the connection between Tentena and the Togian Islands: Is it doable to leave early in the morning as planned and still be sure not to miss the ferry?

I’m currently working on a 30-day itinerary for May/June 2027.
10 days in eastern Java (Malang, Bromo, waterfalls, Meru Beriti Park, Banyuwangi, and Ijen), a short transit in Ubud for a few days, then Flores before heading back to Jakarta.
We’ll spend 15 days in Flores (the classic route: Moni, Bajawa, Riung, Ruteng, ending in Labuan Bajo).
I’d love some firsthand feedback on flights to Maumere or Ende from Bali Denpasar. I know there are no direct routes and that you have to connect through Labuan Bajo or Timor (I think), which isn’t an issue in itself.
But I’ve read here and there that flights to these destinations can be delayed—or worse, canceled—and that it’s better to fly in and out of Labuan Bajo, which isn’t exactly ideal...
