Dans un peu plus d'un mois si tout vas bien je ferais YANT FLAT
Après Yant Flat, je désires aller faire THE VORTEX ... Savez vous si il est possible de continuer à prendre la piste FR031, puis 901, puis la Rte 18 vers l'Ouest ... Certains ont-il déjà pratiqué cette piste dans ce sens (Niveau praticabilité de la 031 & 901 je parle) . J'aurais un SUV Standard loué à Hertz/Vegas ( lequel ... mystère ?? )
J'ai montré mon trajet prévu dans le lien ci dessous (Vous pourrez zoomer dessus et utiliser le menu déroulant à gauche)
De plus, pour ceux qui ont déjà fait Yant Flat ... sur la même carte, j'ai matérialisé "en gros" ce que je voudrais faire ... Après, j'adapterais sur place évidement puisque je ne connais pas les lieux. Des observations ??

Je n'ai jamais poursuivi la piste 31 en direction de St George, à l'Ouest du parking de Yant Flat. Il se dit qu'elle est très difficile et à éviter (contrairement à l'arrivée par l'Est, excellente par temps pas trop mouillé, à l'exception de la toute fin où il y a parfois des ornières assez profondes, mais qui se passent sans trop de pb avec un SUV). Je ne connais pas non plus sa continuation, la 901.
Par contre la rte 18 est excellente et goudronnée. C'est l'un des accès classiques pour le Vortex depuis St George (il faut ensuite prendre vers l'Ouest une route non goudronnée mais bonne et belle, la "Lower Sand Cove Rd", sur environ 4-5 miles jusqu'au parking). Cette route 18 est magnifique le soir au coucher du soleil, car elle passe dans des zones de belles roches rouges flamboyantes, sur les hauteurs de St George.
L'autre accès au Vortex peut se faire par cette même "Lower Sand Cove Rd", mais en arrivant du coté Ouest, en quittant St George par "W Old Hwy 91". Mais la portion non goudronnée m'a alors paru plus longue, et l'ensemble est moins beau.
Depuis le pking de Yant Flat, je te conseille donc de revenir à St George par le même trajet qu'à l'aller, via Leed et l'I-15 (tu gagneras ainsi beaucoup de temps).
Puis d'aller au Vortex (éventuellement en circuit, arriver par l'Ouest, et revenir par l'Est et la 18 (pas mal de monde en WE sur ces trajets).
Mais attention : si tu fais le vortex trop tard, ça perd beaucoup d'intérêt, car en fin de journée quand le fond du trou (il est assez profond) est à l'ombre, les photos ne rendent pas bien.
Pour le trajet à pied à Yant Flat, je ne descends jamais juste au sud du chemin qui arrive du pking (belle vue de là mais ça me parait trop casse gueule pour descendre -c'est peut-être possible-), je tire environ 500-1000m vers l'Est, pour descendre vers ton étoile du milieu (descente sans problème).
Et chaque fois que j'ai voulu remonter par un autre trajet, j'en ai bavé. Je te conseille donc de remonter par le même trajet, aux environs de ton étoile du milieu. Surtout si tu vas au vortex ensuite, il ne faut pas perdre inutilement de temps.

Pour la piste à l'Ouest du parking de Yant Flat je l'avais parcourue de bout en bout avec google earth et vu sur certaines portions des camions et une sorte de bulldozer ... donc je mettais dit peut être que ... Donc je laisse tomber cette solution.
Et puis à priori en passant par St george au niveau du tps donné par google (même si dans certains cas, ça peut être aléatoire) , ça fait à peine 35' de plus
Je pensais faire THE VORTEX en fin d'AM justement pour le couché du soleil ( à mes dates 23/24 Mai il se couche vers 20h42 ) mais apparemment ça serait dans l'ombre donc je me tâte .
J'ai prévu environ 4 jours dans la région de st george, et j'ai casé pas mal de choses (Snow Canyon, Yant Fat, The Vortex, Water Canyon/White domes, Kanarra Creek & permis pour The Subway, Cave Knoll, ensuite .. plus à l'Est vers Zion/Kanab) (peu être trop gourmand ... on s'adaptera sur place, mais quand je suis là bas je ne compte pas les heures de marches et je suis assez bon marcheur ... j'aime moins les pistes lol ... mauvais souvenir ) mais j'ai du mal a caser CATHEDRALE GORGE plus excentré.
Après Yant Flat qu'en pensez vous ... ça fait pas mal de route, je sais, mais je me dit qu'en attaquant sur place Yant Flat entre 7h30 / 8h, jusqu'à 13/14h - Ensuite rte jusqu'à CATHEDRALE GORGE +- 204 km / 2h52 ça me ferais être la bas vers 17h, +- 2 h de visite sur place et retour à St George pour le début de soirée ... ça fait de la rte mais c'est jouable
J'avais aussi pensé à PINE PARC mais il me semble avoir lu quelque part que la piste était par endroit défoncée (donc j'ai laissé tombé)
Pour les pts GPS de Yant Flat, ... merci mais comme j'ai tracé le parcours à pied et en voiture (pour me donner une idée, pareil avec Google Earth) j'ai ce qu'il faut ... C'est vrai que certaines portions sont pas très accessibles (très en pente) , mais c'est plus pour me donner une idée des zones à parcourir et quadriller un peu mes zones ... Pour l'étoile marquée, c'est le pt Gps pour THE TURTLE (me trompje ?) ... Je vais retravailler ça quand même, mais place à la découverte sur place.

Le Vortex il faut y être plus ou moins a midi pour éclairer le trou...
Yant Flat tout début de journée ou fin de journée. .. idéalement je dirais Vortex d'abord, c'est ce que j'ai fait en octobre. Je rentre le 6 si tu veux un gpx bien précis de la descente... que j'ai faite la semaine dernière. ..
Nous avons, après Yant Flat, continué sur la FR031 jusqu'à St Georges. Rocailleuse par endroit, bien sableuse ailleurs. Croisé une "lame" et plusieurs camions sur une piste pas très large avec parfois un "gros trou" sur la droite 😠. Après le croisement avec la FR033, la route descend vers St George, ce qui "règle" partiellement le pb de l'adhérence mais nous avons trouvé des zones trempées où, sans 4WD, nous n'aurions pas pu monter.
Bref, si c'était à refaire, je ne repasserais pas par là, mais pas de grosses difficultés ; paysage sans trop d'intérêt pour nous, même la zone de Yellow Knolls.
Pas pris la 901.
Ok Merci du conseil Yves , même si en octobre le soleil est plus bas sur l'horizon qu'en Mai ... J'essaierai de le caser plus tôt dans la journée suivant mon planning

ça confirme les dires précédemment pour la piste vers l'ouest ... donc j'éviterais et repasserais par St George ... c'est plus raisonnable comme en plus je serais seul.
Sinon, pour CATHEDRALE GORGE, est-ce que le détour vaut le coup après YANT FLAT par exemple pour y être en fin de journée pour ceux qui l'ont fait ? ( à la vue des photos, ça à l'air assez sympa je trouve)

Cathedral Gorge, sans être un incontournable, est sympa à visiter. Belles et énormes roches rouges, flamboyantes au coucher du soleil. Avec un petit slot canyon.
Mais le problème c'est que ce n'est pas une petite et courte balade pour occuper une fin de journée. C'est loin de tout, hors trajets "classiques". C'est surtout à environ 2h de St George, et donc un long AR en voiture.
Je verrai plutôt dans tes projets si tu n'as qu'un temps limité à St George : matin (en ne quittant pas l'hotel trop tôt) : The Vortex. De St George une très petite heure de trajet, plus une petite heure d'accès en haut. Y arriver à 10h-10h30 du matin est je pense parfait pour les photos du vortex en juin.
Puis Yant Flat l'après midi, en essayant d'y être encore quand le soleil commence à rougir. Mais il restera à revenir à l'auto, puis à St George.
Il y a aussi des tas d'autres balades sympas autour de St George si on a du temps : Snow canyon (on peut y passer longtemps), Pine Park, Elephant Arch (sympa et proche), Pentagon Arch, Yellow Knolls et Red Cliff, ... sans parler de White Dome ou autres. Ou même Little Finland (ces deux dernières balades demandant une journée entière).

Pour Cathedral, je verrais après YANT FLAT si j'ai encore du temps malgré tout, et ou j'en serais de mes visites, sinon tant pis ...
Je pourrais avoir l'option "camping" mais le probleme c'est que le lendemain matin très tôt j'ai prévu - Water Canyon / Whites Domes - et ça me ferait trop de rte d'un coup.
Je prépare mes balades et puis selon la météo et les impondérables je m'adapterais sur place de toute fàçon

Je l'ai fait le mois dernier: Vortex à moitié éclairé et donc à moitié dans l'ombre.
Inintéressant pour les photos et même la vue. Ne mérite pas les 45' de grimpette dans ces conditions.
Bon pour moi, ça serait plus vers 17H00 et a ma periode le soleil se couche vers 20h40

PTS est quasi parfait, mais "quasi" seulement 😉.
Pour le coup, c'est vrai que la zone rouge vallonnée où se situe le Vortex est magnifique en fin de journée, mais "The Vortex" lui-même ne rend pas du tout à cette heure sur les photos (ou alors il faut être meilleur photographe que moi).
Pour preuve voici trois vues prises en février dernier, 1h environ avant le sunset. Et encore s'il n'y avait pas eu tant d'eau, le trou apparaitrait bien plus profond.

After that, we’re heading to Sherbrooke to visit our daughter, who’s studying at the university there. We’ll spend 3 days with her, and then, since she has a break that week, we’re taking her along for 3 days in Quebec City.
We’ve planned to visit Montmorency Falls and Île d'Orléans.
I’d love to hear what route you’d recommend for the drive from Sherbrooke to Quebec City—we’ll have the whole day to take it easy.

Classic itinerary: arrival in Calgary, Banff, Jasper, Clearwater, Whistler, Vancouver Island, departure from Vancouver.
I know you can’t see into the future any better than I can, so I’m obviously not asking what the wildfire situation will be like in a month...
But if any of you could let me know if, CURRENTLY, there are major difficulties—not just for locals, of course, but for tourists as well?
We’re hesitating between taking the chance or canceling what we still can.
We’re not young anymore and don’t have the flexibility we once did...

A friend is renting a car for an upcoming trip during the All Saints' holiday.
Nowadays, all rental cars come with GPS, but do you know if you can use it without paying for the GPS rental? I have no idea since I always use my own!
After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏

We went as a family to Mount Rushmore in 2023, where my son bought a multi-function pocket knife like the one below with his name engraved—'NOAH'.
Unfortunately, he just lost it, and he was really attached to it. So, if there’s a kind soul passing by Mount Rushmore who could bring one back for me (I’d obviously cover all costs), that would be amazing for my son.

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

We’ll be alternating between house swaps, motels, and campgrounds. I’ve booked all the accommodations (except the campground at Bryce since sunset bookings open only 14 days in advance) and the first activities, as well as the most touristy ones.

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:
- Mormon Rocks
- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

Is it pretty easy to navigate Detroit Airport to catch the connecting flight to Grand Rapids (domestic flight)? There are several of them who speak English well.

**Parking:**
We’d like to walk to Eagle Falls and then Eagle Lake. I’ve spotted two parking lots that seem close to each other and give access to the trailhead. Where and how do we pay for entry to Emerald Bay State Park and Inspiration Point?
**Viewpoints on the East Side:**
Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I'm shocked by the price of the Upper Antelope Canyon tour—$175 for less than an hour… You might say, "if you can’t afford it…" But the real question is whether it’s really worth it, because $350 for two makes me feel like I’m getting ripped off. For those who’ve done both Lower and Upper, can you tell me if the price difference is really justified? Thanks

As you can see, we're heading back from September 6th to the 27th.
Everything’s booked for September—flights, accommodations, and the car. As I plan, I’ll be asking the experts for help. This is our second trip to California, but most of the stops are new to us.

Paradise Meadow (maybe not going all the way), Devastated Area, and the loop around Reflection and Manzanita Lakes (Day 3)
Cinder Cone and Painted Dunes (Day 4)
Devil’s Kitchen and Boiling Spring Lake (Day 5)
I’ve read there are trails to access the trailheads for Cinder Cone (11 km) and Warner Valley. Are these easy trails for an SUV?
Are there any other must-see spots or things we shouldn’t miss?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

I’m planning a week-long family trip to NYC in October 2026. The focus is on museums and soaking up the New York vibe. I’ve been checking Airbnb, but the prices in Manhattan are through the roof. Since I don’t know NYC well, is it "wise" to look outside Manhattan? Any neighborhoods you’d recommend?

Just a little post that might interest some of you:

I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!
