Hi everyone, We’re planning to travel from Mongolia to China in July 2026 via the land border. I know there’s a visa exemption for French citizens in China, but I think I read that if you’re coming from Mongolia, you need a visa. Has anyone got any info on this? Thanks! Séverine

Hi,

Where did you read that? However, it’s possible that some border posts may not be open to foreigners.

Hi Michel, I read this info on Travel Advice/Mongolia. Regarding the border crossing, we’ll be taking the train or bus, so it’ll be an open crossing point. Séverine

Yes, I did read that, but just because a visa is required in principle to travel to China from Mongolia doesn’t rule out—at least in my view—that for certain types of stays under 30 days, there might still be a visa exemption possible until at least the end of 2026. I think it’s one of those clumsy and misleading statements you often find on travel advice sites. A border crossing can be used by buses or trains without necessarily being open to foreigners.
