Hey fellow travelers,

I’m spending two weeks studying Hindi in the mornings in Delhi, in the Hauz Khas neighborhood. What spots should I check out in this area? Any cafés to chill at? How do I get to other parts of Delhi? By rickshaw? Is it easy to negotiate the price upfront?

Thanks in advance. 😊 Marlène

Hello,

Hauz Khas is close to several major historical sites in south Delhi: Qutb Minar, especially, as well as Tughlakabad, Humayun's Mausoleum, and the Bahá'í Lotus Temple...

The best way to reach the rest of Delhi from Hauz Khas is by metro: it's cheap (30 rupees to the center), fast, modern, and clean. You can also buy day or weekly passes, which is even more advantageous if you use the metro as your main mode of transport.

Compared to the metro, rickshaws are much more expensive, and you can't negotiate the price "upfront." However, it's not easy to negotiate if you're not familiar with the process, as rickshaw drivers are tough bargainers and will always be convincing enough to make a novice pay five times the price. The best approach is to find out the normal fare for a trip in advance by asking someone who knows and then sticking firmly to that price. Normally, a rickshaw ride from Hauz Khas to Connaught Place shouldn't cost more than 150 rupees.

Otherwise, the Hauz Khas neighborhood is mainly made up of trendy cafés of all kinds, so you won’t have any trouble finding one...

Thanks for your feedback. I’m not a newbie, but they only see a foreigner, so it’s not easy to get the right price.
