hi, We're heading to the Selous Game Reserve from January 21 to 23 and have booked 2 nights at the Mapumziko Lodge. We'd like to take a flight to get there faster, but we can't find any info on flights, their prices, or the airstrips—there are so many in Selous, apparently. Has anyone taken a small plane there before and could give us some tips? Thanks in advance

hi nathalie,

I think the only airline that flies to Selous is coastal. Of course, if you have time to experience the real, folkloric Tanzania, you should take the Tazara, the train that goes from Dar es Salaam to Kapiri Mposhi (Zambia). Just so you know, "mapumziko" means "rest" in Swahili. Enjoy this amazing country and all its friendly people.

Hi Nathalie,

The Selous Game Reserve is also served by Auric Air and Safari Air Link. The airstrips are located near the camps, which means almost every camp has its own.

Safe travels! Have a great trip!

Hi Bubu,

It's true that Coastal handles the vast majority of traffic, being about 10 times larger than Auric. As for Safari Air Link, which is part of the Fox family, it mainly serves the family camps in Ruaha, Katavi, and Selous, but not only... (we also used it to go to Saadani, see here)

Have a great day!

Hi there,

There are now far fewer airstrips in the Selous Reserve. Back in 2018, I remember when each flight could make frequent stops to drop off or pick up guests. Every camp used to have its own airstrip within 15 minutes... Now, only the Mtemere airstrip remains, near the main gate of the reserve, and I think there’s another one near a very remote lodge in Selous (whose name I’ve forgotten). If you're heading to "Lake Manze Camp," you’re looking at a solid two-hour drive from Mtemere airstrip to the camp...!! It’s not too bad when you’re arriving, but on departure day, you’ll want to leave extra time in case of a flat tire. Once, during the flood season, I even had to be transferred by boat via the Rufiji River.

Hi there,

**Little detail to know about these domestic flights with Costal Aviation, Safari Airlink, Auric Air, etc.:**

- Some flights can be canceled at the last minute (usually because there aren’t enough passengers on the outbound trip or the return to Dar es Salaam). In this case, you’ll be automatically transferred to a later (or earlier!) flight with another airline.

The downsides can be numerous: - If you exceed the 24-hour entry window you paid for at the reserve, you’ll have to pay a new fee per person for another 24 hours, even if you’re just a few minutes over...

- If you have an international return flight right after, you might miss your connecting flight... We had this scare when a flight was canceled (the agency covered the extra entry fees). But we still managed to catch our plane.

Keep in mind that in Dar es Salaam, between the domestic airport and the international airport (which share the same runway!), there’s no direct connection. You’ll need to take a taxi for 10–15 minutes, depending on traffic on the main road.

- Usually, this taxi transfer is included in your flight ticket and arranged by the airline.

**Another thing to know about these domestic flights:** - Departures from Dar es Salaam are generally on time.

- However, at the airstrips in the various reserves, schedules are very unpredictable. When ALL the passengers on the pilot’s list are present, they’ll take off—even an hour early. It’s also happened (ask Blesl!!) that the plane left early without all the scheduled passengers... so make sure to arrive an hour before!!

Africa is unpredictable!!

An IMPORTANT DETAIL in June 2025:

All airlines in Tanzania have been placed on the European Union's blacklist. (Both small and large airlines.)

This will have huge repercussions in many areas of Tanzanian tourism and will deal it a severe blow....!! Impact on insurance, for example, etc... etc...
