UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Honduras has two sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Copan, Honduras
Copan (1980)
This is "the" Maya site in Honduras. Located on the border with Guatemala, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve (1982)
A UNESCO-listed site in the heart of La Mosquitia, stretching from the central mountains to the Caribbean coast. Wildlife and plant life are abundant, as are archaeological sites. Hiking is possible here.

Cities and Cultural Heritage

Comayagua
This former capital has preserved its beautiful colonial architecture.
Copan, Honduras
Copan
This is "the" Maya site in Honduras. Located on the border with Guatemala, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Gulf of Fonseca
On the Pacific coast, between El Salvador and Nicaragua, the Gulf of Fonseca is home to several beaches nestled among mangroves.
Gracias, Honduras
Gracias
Nestled in the mountains, this town in the west of the country has preserved its colonial style. It also features hot springs.
La Ceiba
Caribbean coastal port city with beautiful beaches and ferries to the Bay Islands. It’s also a great base for exploring the surrounding area (Pico Bonito, Garifuna villages).
The Mosquitia
This rainforest region stretches along the eastern coast of Honduras and especially Nicaragua, inhabited only by a few indigenous communities. The area has minimal infrastructure and offers great opportunities for off-the-beaten-path exploration.
Omoa
This seaside resort near San Pedro Sula is home to a beautiful 18th-century Spanish fortress.
San Pedro Sula
The second-largest urban area in Honduras is more of an economic hub and transport crossroads than a tourist city. It is also a city "notorious" for its violence and insecurity.
Santa Rosa de Copan
Not far from Copan, in the mountains, the town has a charming colonial centre.
Tegucigalpa
The capital and largest city of the country isn’t the most attractive tourist destination, despite its beautiful 18th-century cathedral.
Tela
Between La Ceiba and Guatemala, this seaside town has beautiful beaches and is especially at the heart of Garifuna culture, which you can also discover in the surrounding villages.
Trujillo
Nestled in the bay of the same name, with mountains in the background, Trujillo offers beautiful beaches dominated by an old fortress.
Valle de Angeles
This pretty valley not far from Tegucigalpa is home to several small villages dating from the Spanish colonial era within its municipality.

Islands

Cayos Cochinos, Honduras
Cayos Cochinos
A small, sparsely inhabited archipelago between La Ceiba (on the mainland) and the Islas de la Bahía. Stunning postcard-perfect beaches and diving far from the crowds.
Guanaja
The easternmost of the Bay Islands is less touristy than its neighbors, even though it offers beautiful beaches and great diving and fishing spots.
Islas de la Bahia, Honduras
Bay Islands
The islands of Roatan, Utila, and Guanaja are the three main ones in this Caribbean archipelago. The area is renowned for diving, beaches, and nightlife, particularly on Roatan.
Roatan, Honduras
Roatan
With its magnificent beaches and coral reef, this is the most developed island for tourism in the region and a renowned diving hotspot.
Utila, Honduras
Utila
Far more backpacker- and independent-traveller-friendly, the island offers the same stunning beaches and diving opportunities as the rest of the archipelago.

Warning: A large part of the country (outside the islands and Copán) is currently strongly advised against for security reasons by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
