KEGASKA - NORTH SHORE

GPS coordinates: 50.189043, -61.272110 Village GPS coordinates: 50.175666, -61.268259 Wreck of the Brion

Highway 138 ends in the village of Kegaska, which is about sixty kilometers from Natashquan.

This road is unpaved for nearly 40 kilometers. It's gravel and in very good condition. (UPDATE 2025: This road is now fully paved 🙂)

Many say there isn’t much to see except the sign announcing the end of the road.

I beg to differ: this village has incredible charm, untouched nature, and an extraordinary coastline.

We drove down a sandy path toward Kegaska Airport. This road runs along the coast, and we met a local who showed us a small trail leading to the beach.

So, we left our vehicle by the side of the road and set off on a hike along this long, stunning beach.

We walked east to the end of the beach, which is bordered by fragmented rocks that trap a tiny part of the Gulf of St. Lawrence waters when the tide goes out.

We returned to our car and headed toward Kegaska’s port. We passed by the village’s Anglican church, which is located near the beautiful Kegaska River.

In Kegaska, it’s not just laundry that dries outside on a clothesline. Fishermen also use this method to dry their fishing nets. We saw this a few times.

We walked for a long time along the coastline to reach the wreck of the Brion. Along the way, we even spotted a common eider duck swimming in the Gulf’s waters.

We also discovered sea urchins of unparalleled beauty and lush, colorful nature.

The ground was covered with mosses, lichens, multicolored flowers, and plants, forming a beautiful vegetal carpet. I’d never seen anything like it before. It was magnificent.

We finally arrived at the wreck of the Brion, a cargo ship from the Magdalen Islands that hit a shoal and sank near the village in 1976.

Despite the ravages of time, it still stands upright on the flat rocks along the coastline.

To return to our vehicle, we took the wooden boardwalk instead and then followed a path that brought us back toward the port, about a 1 km walk.
