What’s your definition of a nature destination?

Translated into English.

To me, a "museumified" nature is like a still life.

But that’s not actually the dictionary definition (which is also a tool for mummifying language).

But that’s not actually the dictionary definition (which is also a tool for mummifying language).

No need for a dictionary to define a concept I had to learn in art class back in 6th grade... Every new edition of a dictionary includes tons of new words. You didn’t know that?

We’ve really gone overboard at this point.

But I asked for it, so I’ll leave now!

Michel,

I didn’t think that asking a very simple question that only required an equally simple answer would open Pandora’s box. I forgot we’re on VF, where no question is ever simple.

Some answer frankly, others beat around the bush. Is there a hidden meaning? If I answer, will people think I approve of the topic? I don’t like the person who started the thread, so I won’t answer—or I’ll just say anything. I’d like to respond, but if I do, I might…

Anyway, asking a question on VF is a bit like French politics.

But let’s get back to the topic?

Or not…

We’ve had your aunt’s definition and your grandson’s. Now we’re just missing yours...

And I haven’t even mentioned my uncle from America. He’s settled in Missoula and swears by Montana and Wyoming (together bigger than France with only 2 million people), where I’ll be joining him.

It’s tough to put a definition into words, let alone provide examples: The places I’ve wandered: Australia, Scandinavia north of the Arctic Circle, Mauritania, northwest Namibia, Botswana. But also pockets in Ireland or Poland, the Baltics, or Mali. If I dare say, spots where you can take a leak in peace. 😉

I was kind of leaning toward visiting Poland in winter, but if you’re including it partly as a nature destination, I’ll go for summer instead! 😛

And what if we got back to the topic?

Got it!

For me, nothing beats following (with humility) in the footsteps of Charles de Foucauld and Théodore Monod.

Tracking bison in the Białowieża Forest must be even more thrilling in winter. But the surrounding areas are now home to more belligerent species: Belarus is at the end of the trail, and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad isn’t far off.

Another example of a nature destination: anywhere in the world where land and sea meet, hidden from human eyes. (below, somewhere in the Baltics)

@Herodotos: Could those be Charles and Theodore incognito in the last photo? 😉

I’d say Algeria?

This country must have a lot to offer. Maybe the day after tomorrow, when the situation there is calmer.

For desert vibes, Saudi Arabia must be amazing too. Safety should be fine if you respect the religious guidelines (which are now less strict than in Iran), but something’s still holding me back...

Yes, it’s the Algerian Sahara—the "Grand Sud" as we used to call it—twenty years after my first wanderings in the region and just before the brutal civil war. Speaking of which, I’m currently reading the latest Goncourt winner.

quelque part dans les pays baltes

Could it be Neringa, that miniature Sahara?

I’ll let you all discuss and share your definition of a nature destination. 🙂

Generally, nature destinations mean going to a natural reserve within the destination country. For example, *Romania: the Danube Delta, the Carpathians. *Poland: Białowieża Forest *France: Les Écrins, Mercantour etc
