Using a local SIM card in Japan

Hi, Our trip is planned for 20 days in Japan next April. We have a free subscription that would allow us to use 35 GB (I’m a bit confused), but we also need to be able to make phone calls with a French couple traveling with us for a few days, and that seems impossible due to cost... Any solutions for using GPS while keeping those 35 GB? Used to traveling in Southeast Asia, we usually rely on local SIM cards. Is it easy to do the same in Japan? Thanks for your help! Best, Tialou

Hi, If you have the classic Free plan, you don’t have Japan (35GB) included right now—it’s only available with the FREE MAX plan with unlimited data. Once you have data at your hotel or via a SIM, you can call your friends on WhatsApp or Messenger without limits. You can easily buy a SIM after baggage claim, whether in Tokyo or Osaka. Prices range from 25 € to 45 € for a month of data, depending on the carrier—Japan Wireless is the cheapest.

Hello, I wanted to let you know that after contacting FREE MOBILE, I got the following info for a trip to Japan: 19.35 € per month instead of 9.99 €, considering I have the Freebox with the FREEMAX plan. This plan will give me unlimited internet, and thanks to that, free calls using only WhatsApp or Messenger. Our friends will have to pay 29.99 € for the same service because they don’t have the Freebox. We’re discussing this privately—shouldn’t we "move" your info and mine (which is a bit more detailed) to the general discussions so it can help other travelers? I’ll add that I just switched to this plan to be more relaxed during my upcoming trip to Turkey. Best regards, Tialou

Hi, Yes, you made the right choice! Free offered me the same deal for 19.99 € since I’m a subscriber instead of 29.99 €. Plus, with Free, you get a VPN included, which makes things easier for me in China. This might be useful for other travelers to know—it’s worth it for unlimited data. Have a great trip to Japan! 😉

Hi again, Do you know how we can share this info with other travelers? How can we make it visible so they can read it? Best, Tialou

Morning all, Yes, I know—even though VoyageForum took a bit of a break for a few years. I just wanted to say that maybe these FREEMAX details about private messaging could interest other travelers. See you around, and thanks again! Best, Tialou

Hi there,

For this kind of use, the idea of unlimited data or not isn’t really the right question—unless you plan to spend dozens of hours on WhatsApp or binge-watch series. So whether it’s 20 GB, 35 GB, or unlimited, it doesn’t matter—it’s way more than you’ll need anyway. The real question is which local partner your carrier works with, because having unlimited data with a partner that doesn’t provide good coverage is pointless. That’s why I always prefer an eSIM—it works with multiple local carriers, which, as far as I know (though I could be wrong), isn’t the case with Free. In my opinion, the best combo is keeping your Free SIM active but with data turned off and using an eSIM instead.

Hi,

I use it in Japan, Korea, China, Vietnam, and Thailand—no complaints. It works really well, and the built-in VPN works perfectly in China. Too bad Taiwan isn’t available yet.

All well and good, but for me, it's a safety issue when traveling not to rely on just one SIM card tied to a single local provider.

I’ve been a frequent traveler to Japan since the 80s—though I’ll admit that doesn’t make me any younger!—and I’ve pretty much seen all the changes in international phone communication. From the green payphones in shopping malls (or their gray counterparts in post offices) to pocket Wi-Fi, SIM cards, and now eSIMs, I haven’t missed much.

Then came the international plan extensions introduced by Orange and later adopted by all the French carriers. Personally, I’m with RED by SFR, and for 16 € a month, I have a “global” (or nearly) plan that gives me 250 GB of data in France *plus* 35 GB outside Europe. It works great in Japan—the eSIM automatically connects to the strongest available network, no matter where I am.

I took full advantage of it in April. The best part? No setup needed when I arrive—the connection is automatic. For calls, WhatsApp or Line are reliable options, or there are always those green or gray payphones if needed…

Good evening, thank you for your reply. We only went to Japan back in 2005—an unforgettable experience! Thanks for this info. We’ve already used Free Mobile’s MAX plan on one of our phones, which our usual operator claims is unlimited for internet, and then for communication with a couple of friends while there, we used WhatsApp. One question, though, since you’re a regular in Japan: do hotels have landline or mobile phone numbers (since WhatsApp absolutely requires mobile numbers...)? We’ve already booked the hotel in Tokyo for the end of our stay, just during Golden Week, to experience 6 days “the Japanese way” in the capital. We’d love to visit Kyushu Island and Nagasaki—have you been there before? Is it easy to travel around that island? Like you, we’re not exactly spring chickens anymore—we’ve traveled mostly in Asia and South America. And this should be our last big trip (we’ll have to know when to stop for major destinations and stick to Europe from now on)! Best regards, Tialou

Good evening Tialou. WhatsApp is very handy... but it's hardly used in Japan. In fact, the Japanese prefer using the "Line" app... which is barely known or used in France. Hotels can generally be reached on landline phones. I was in Tokyo this year during Golden Week... never again: too many people everywhere, public transport packed even in the middle of the day. While Tokyo residents often leave to visit their families at this time, many others come to replace them! Where haven't I been? I'm missing three or four prefectures to have been everywhere in Japan. So I've been to Kyushu, except for Oita Prefecture... for now. If you enjoy reading, I run a website about my discoveries in Japan with nearly 800 articles. Here's the link to my articles—you'll easily find what I've visited on Kyushu Island. https://www.soleil-rouge.org/ Happy planning and have a great trip to Japan!

Good morning and thank you so much! If the LINE app is also widely used and free (?), so it works with the internet, that could be interesting. I just read (see AI info attachment) that it’s used for voice and text messaging. (Such a great answer, as the kids say! Yes, I can’t wait to show my husband Martial the link you sent.) Free app okay, downloadable on-site via GOOGLE PLAY for my Android smartphone?? So the only advantage of subscribing to FREE MAX is having unlimited internet while keeping WhatsApp for sending photos and videos back to France. We’ll get back to you, if you don’t mind, as we plan our trip. For now, we’re off to Istanbul. Thanks again! Best regards, Magguy and Martial
