Non, les couples franco indiens ne sont pas courants à Pondichéry. C'est une petite ville de province où l'emprise de la tradition est encore très forte, et où la majorité des filles épousent un conjoint de leur caste et de leur religion, proposé par leurs parents. Elles sont généralement vierges le jour de leur mariage.
Il n'est donc pas question pour une jeune fille Indienne "comme il faut", d'avoir un amant, et encore moins un Blanc.
La majorité des rares couples franco-indiens seront des couples mariés, et l'accord de la famille indienne pour une telle "mésalliance" aura souvent été arraché de haute lutte.
Du moment que les gens sont mariés, pas besoin de se cacher.
Curieusement, une fois vaincus les obstacles de la tradition indienne, un tel mariage peut susciter plus de commentaires racistes parmi la communauté blanche que chez les Indiens.
L'Inde évolue: j'ai eu connaissance de couples indiens, de religion ou de castes différentes, couchant ensemble pendant des années, avant d'obtenir l'accord de leurs familles respectives pour se marier. Je le sais parce que cela concerne certains de mes amis.
Il y a peut-être aussi des relations secrètes franco indiennes, qui sait?

Les Franco Pondichériens, c'est-à-dire les Indiens de nationalité française, sont environ 7000 à vivre encore à Pondichéry et Karikal. Il n’en reste, je crois moins de 500 à Yanaon et Mahé réunis.
Les autres, environ 30.000 ; pour l’essentiel des Tamouls originaires de Pondichéry et Karikal, sont dispersés en France (Métropole et Outre-Mer). On sait par exemple que la plupart des gardiens du Château de Versailles sont franco pondichériens.
80% de ceux qui vivent encore à Pondichéry sont parmi les plus défavorisés, et ne parlent pas un mot de français. Ils se rendent régulièrement au Consulat Général pour percevoir RMI, allocations familiales, sécurité sociale, etc.
Quand on sait qu’un RMIste français perçoit deux fois le salaire d’un professeur de l’Université de Pondichéry, on comprendra qu’être « français », pour un Franco Pondichérien d’origine modeste et vivant en Inde, constitue une véritable sinécure.
Un Franco Pondichérien, est par conséquent un excellent parti, et nombreuses sont les familles indiennes rêvant de marier leurs rejetons à ceux d’une famille « française », qu’elle vive en Inde ou à des milliers de kilomètres. On a d’ailleurs vu une famille franco pondichérienne de la Région Parisienne essayer de tromper une famille indienne sur la marchandise, en tentant de marier un fils « français » handicapé mental dont l’infirmité avait été soigneusement dissimulée jusqu’au jour du mariage…
Parmi les mieux lotis des Franco Pondichériens vivant en Inde, il y a les anciens militaires de l’armée française, qui se retrouvent régulièrement au Foyer du Soldat.
Il y a en effet des Franco Pondichériens mieux lotis qui arrivent à payer des études au Lycée Français à leurs enfants, grâce auxquels l’établissement survit encore. Une fois le bac en poche, ces jeunes Tamouls de nationalité française doivent aller à l’université en France, les diplômes français n’étant pas reconnus en Inde. Ils font donc leur carrière et leur vie en France, ne revenant à Pondichéry que pour les vacances, pour se marier, et éventuellement pour la retraite. Certains possèdent des maisons de famille en Inde, d’autres doivent loger chez des parents, ou à l’hôtel. Nombre d’entre eux, notamment les jeunes, s’habillent à l’occidentale, s’expriment en français sans accent. Les enfants parlent peu le tamoul, voire pas du tout.
Certains vacanciers franco pondichériens d’origine modeste, et dont le niveau de vie s’est élevé plus vite, en France, que leur niveau d’instruction et leurs bonnes manières, se comportent en Inde comme des nababs, et dépensent beaucoup d’argent dans les magasins en s’exclamant tout le temps « c’est pas cher !». Les Indiens les envient tout en les méprisant, et les appellent «French karanga» (les Français).
Les cloisonnements liés à la caste et à la religion sont les mêmes au sein de la communauté franco pondichérienne en particulier, que dans la société indienne en général, même si personne ne veut bien l’avouer. Une grande partie des Franco Pondichériens vivant encore en Inde est d’ailleurs constituée de pauvres pêcheurs villageois, dont la caste est par définition intouchable, puisqu’ils sont en contact permanent avec des animaux morts. Mais si un journaliste veut enquêter sur les Intouchables de nationalité française, toutes les portes se ferment, et on lui dit que ça n’existe pas.
Quant aux expatriés français blancs, il y en a de toutes sortes : personnels du Lycée Français, de l’Alliance Française, du Consulat Général, chercheurs de l’Institut Français d’Extrême Orient, hôteliers, restaurateurs, retraités voulant vivre au soleil, rentiers et millionnaires ayant acheté une vieille demeure coloniale de la Ville Blanche (l’ancien quartier français), Aurovilliens (mais ces derniers préfèrent le plus souvent rester entre eux à Auroville, et ne descendent à Pondy que par nécessité), religieux (ces derniers se comptent désormais sur les doigts d’une main), membres d’ONG, etc.
D’un resto français à l’autre, on rencontre toujours les mêmes têtes, et encore les mêmes aux vernissages, aux manifestations culturelles de l’Alliance Française, aux soirées organisées par les uns ou les autres. On s’ennuie beaucoup, on médit d’un tel ou d’une telle, au lieu de s’occuper de ses propres affaires. Les célibataires guettent l’arrivée de la chair fraîche. Bref, c’est comme dans n’importe quel microcosme provincial. Il parait que c’était déjà comme ça au temps des Colonies.
Ces gens, à l’exception des plus ouverts et des plus charitables, ne fréquentent guère les Franco Pondichériens, ni les Indiens moyens et pauvres, se contentant de croiser les anciens combattants lors des cérémonies du 14 juillet et du 11 novembre, et de participer aux mêmes divertissements et évènements protocolaires qu’une certaine haute société indienne francophile, et plus rarement francophone.
Quant à la crème des businessmen et entrepreneurs venus de France, elle se trouve plutôt dans la mégalopole voisine, Madras/Chennai, capitale du Tamil Nadu, 7 millions d’habitants intra-muros, à 150km soit 3h de route de Pondichéry.
C’est d’ailleurs à Madras que se trouvent tous les Consulats Généraux étrangers. Si la France garde le sien à Pondichéry, c’est en raison de son passé colonial dans la place, et de la présence de 7000 ressortissants à administrer. Mais la Mission Economique Française, elle, se trouve à Madras. La France a tout de même à Madras un Consulat Honoraire qui fait la liaison avec Pondichéry.
