Je suis toute nouvelle sur ce site et j'ai besoin d'aide !!!
Pour notre voyage de noces, on a décidé d'aller dans l'Ouest Américain... On part du vendredi 28/09/12 (arrivée à San Francisco à 12h20) et retour le vendredi 12/10/12 (départ SF à 15H), soit 14 nuits - 13 jours pleins et 2 demi-journées...
Une fois les billets réservés, j'ai commencé à regarder les différents circuits proposés ... Et là commence les problèmes !!! (Déjà, je pense que j'ai fait une boulette en réservant un A/R via la même ville (SF) mais bon, c'est fait et donc on ne peut pas revenir dessus...)...
Par contre, pour le circuit, il y a encore tout à faire et donc, c'est là que je sollicite votre aide !!!
Vous allez me dire que les idées de séjours de 15 jours "foisonnent" sur ce site... Et c'est bien cela mon problème !!
J'ai l'impression qu'en gros, 14 jours, ce n'est pas assez !!! Et du coup, je ne sais plus du tout vers quelle direction aller ...
Dans ma tête, j'étais partie pour faire les "incontournables" : SF - LA - LV et 1 parc et le Grand Canyon soit une boucle SF- Yosemite -death valley - Las-Vegas- Grand Canyon- Los Angeles- SF
... Mais aux vues des différents post que je consulte depuis 2 jours (!!!), je me retrouve avec un max de questions :
- le fait qu'il faut mieux faire SF - LA que LA-SF car le paysage est mieux dans ce sens (route touristique...)
- d'autres disent que cette route n'a que peu d'intérêt : faut il prévoir un vol interne ???
- les routes fermées de Yosemite à des périodes de l'année : est ce que ce sera mon cas ?
- D'autres disent que Yosémite a peu d'intérêt si on est "français" et que l'on connait les Alpes...
- je pensais "Grand Canyon" et sur le site, on m'indique que Bryce Canyon est "incontournable", idem pour Monument Valley...

A cette saison le Tioga Pass sera probablement encore ouvert , donc vous pourriez faire un trajet aller en traversant Yosemite (sans ses cascades à cette saison) , vers DV-LV .
Si vous voulez voir (rapidement) au passage GC , Bryce ou Zion , et a fortiori MV , il faudra laisser tomber Los Angeles . En revenant par exemple par Bakersfield et en rejoignant la côte vers San Luis Obispo au retour pour remonter sur SFO .
Mais le programme est très chargé !
PS : penser aussi qu' en octobre les journées sont déjà + courtes

Dans les deux cas, pour profiter du paysage il faut faire de nombreux arrêts et ça ne pose pas de problème que la route soit faite du nord au sud ou du sud vers le nord.
- d'autres disent que cette route n'a que peu d'intérêt : faut il prévoir un vol interne ??? La route entre SF et LA a peu d'intérêt si tu prend celle à l'intérieur des terres. Mais la côte est très jolie...cependant moins dépaysante pour un Européen que peuvent l'être les parcs de l'Utah par exemple.

- D'autres disent que Yosémite a peu d'intérêt si on est "français" et que l'on connait les Alpes... Je vis dans les Alpes et je trouve que Yosemite est bien différent de ce que je peux voir autour de moi, que ce soit pour la faune ou la flore, mais également d'un point de vu géologique. Après c'est sûr ça ressemble plus aux Alpes que Monument Valley, mais ça peut quand même valoir le coup d'y aller.

Déjà je suis un peu rassurée...
Donc, on va être raisonnable et prendre notre temps (enfin, j'espère...), on va prendre la première solution c'est à dire : SF-Yosemite-Death Valley-Las vegas-Grand Canyon-LA-côte pacifique-SF.
Quelles sont dans cette boucle, les haltes entre chaque point d'intérêt, que vous me conseillez ? Bref, où trouvez "refuge" pour la nuit et pour être "au bon moment, au bon endroit" (on lit qu'il faut arriver de nuit à LV, que le coucher de soleil sur la death valley est sublime, etc....)!!!
Essai déjà d'établir un planning pour tes 15 jours en fonction de ce que tu voudrais voir. Une fois cela fait, ce sera plus simple de te donner des conseils sur les endroits où loger ou bien l'heure de certaines visites...etc

C'est sûr que le fait d'avoir pris un aller-retour de San Francisco complique largement la donne. Mais ne t'inquiète pas trop, avec un peu de préparation tu feras quand même un voyage fabuleux.
Comme déjà dit par d'autres, tu as deux circuits possibles. Un premier circuit où tu fais toute la boucle en voiture avec Los Angeles et la Côte Pacifique.
Un autre où tu prends un vol interne entre San Francisco et Phoenix par exemple, ce qui te permettra de voir les parcs plus dépaysants de l'Utah et de l'Arizona. Pour une premier voyage je pense que c'est ce que je privilégierais 😉

Bon, ça y est : on s’est arrêté sur un programme (proche du circuit 1 de ITAT...). Je vous le soumets et j’attends tous vos bons conseils et réponse à mes interrogations, SVP :
Rappel des faits : les billets A/R Paris – San Francisco sont pris (et pas de possibilité de changement donc on fait une boucle : SF – SF ) 2 possibilités :
SF (arrivée 12h40) – Yosemite – Death Valley – LV – LA – côte Pacifique – SF vers Paris (avion : départ 15h)
Ou
SF (arrivée 12h40) – Yosemite – Death Valley – LV – Bryce – Monument Valley – Grand Canyon – LA – avion de LA à SF – SF vers Paris (avion : départ 15h)
La première solution est qu’on loue la voiture à SF et qu’on la rend à SF et que l’on peut être en vacances jusqu’à la fin : on peut dormir à Monterey (ou ailleurs) le jeudi soir et partir tôt pour prendre notre vol à SF (ou dormir à SF et profiter de la matinée…).
La 2ème solution n’a pas cet avantage : je dois prendre un avion tôt le vendredi matin pour être sure d’être à SF pour prendre l’avion de retour sur la France… Je peux aussi prendre un avion le jeudi soir tard mais on serait obligé de dormir à proximité de l’aéroport vu qu’on aura plus de voiture… Mais, dans cette solution, on voit d’autres paysages (bryce, monument… ) et on ne voit pas la côte pacifique (que l’on prend dans le mauvais sens d’après ce que j’ai compris…).
Questions globales :
On souhaite réserver en avance les hôtels pour les grandes villes (SF, Los Angeles et Las Vegas) pour profiter des tarifs. Mais, selon vous, est-il nécessaire de réserver tous les hôtels du parcours (période début octobre ???). ça me saoule d’avoir un parcours fléché avec des étapes fixes, j’aime bien me dire que si je trouve un endroit top, je peux y rester et ne pas être obligé d’aller là où on a réservé…
Je ne sais pas encore quelle voiture on aura, mais, si on ne trouve pas d’hôtel de disponible sur le parcours (dans des parcs ou villages – on ne va pas s’arrêter en plein désert…), est-il possible de dormir dans sa voiture sans risque d’amende ou d’être attaqué par des fous dangereux ???

Les avis divergent à ce sujet… Il ne semble pas nécessaire d’avoir une voiture pour visiter SF mais que c’est tout de même bien pour aller de l’autre côté du Golden Brigde…
- Que me conseillez-vous en hôtel à SF, bien placé et qui a un parking moins couteux qu’une chambre (!!!) ???
- si je prends une réservation de voiture en ville le lundi matin, quelle agence me suggérez-vous ?
(ici, je pense que la 1ère solution est la mieux comme cela, on n’a pas à courir le lundi matin pour trouver une agence mais encore faut il trouver un hôtel, bien, avec parking !!!

perso, je trouve dommage de privilégier Yosemite, Death Valley, LA et la côte ... ce ne sont pas des paysages "spectaculaires" comme peuvent l'être ceux de Bryce Canyon ou le mythique Monument Valley par ex... mais bon c'est votre choix, pas de pb 😉
le seul truc, c'est que je trouve que c'est la course votre circuit (bon on ne va pas revenir là dessus, c'est clairement l'A/R depuis SFO qui vous met "dedans" 😛)...

non, vous n'êtes pas obligé de réserver, sauf que dans votre cas vous êtes déjà trop juste au niveau timing pour vous permettre de "trainer en route" 😕... et que vu le peu de temps dont vous diposez se mettre en quête d'un logement dans certains coins pourraient être galère (je pense à Yosemite notamment (oui tout est cher à Yosemite !), Death Valley (2 hôtels seulement) ou encore le Grand Canyon (histoire de ne pas se retrouver à Williams à 1h de route 🏴☠️)) si vous ne voulez pas faire des km en + ...
ce qui ne va pas dans votre parcours :
* 2 jours à SFO, c'est court ! perso, je louerais la voiture en arrivant... mais effectivement ça va impliquer soit de trouver un hôtel avec parking gratuit, soit d'en payer un (20$/jour)... mais ça vous permettra d'aller faire qq visites plus rapidement qu'à pied ou en transport en commun... attention cependant à bien alimenter les parcmètres ! ça rigole beaucoup moins là bas que par chez nous 😛...
* 1/2 journée à Yosemite : trop court !
* ensuite vous voulez faire Yosemite - Death Valley - Las Vegas beaucoup trop rapidement... c'est dommage... notamment de ne pas passer 1 nuit dans Deaht Valley...
* peu de temps au Grand Canyon...
* longue, très longue (même si faisable) entre Grand Canyon et LA...
* remonter la côte entre LA et SFO en 1 seule étape, c'est un peu trop rapide...

Nous avons organisé un voyage (couple retraité) fin août -première quinzaine de septembre dans l'ouest canadien.
Circuit classique : arrivée à Calgary, Banff, Jasper, Clearwater, Whistler, île de Vancouver, départ de Vancouver.
Je sais que vous ne lisez pas plus que moi dans la boule de cristal, aussi je ne vous demande évidemment pas quelle sera la situation au niveau des incendies dans un mois...
Mais si certains d'entre vous pouvaient me dire si, ACTUELLEMENT, il y a de grosses difficultés, non seulement pour les habitants, évidemment, mais pour les touristes ?
Nous hésitons en effet à tenter le coup ou à annuler ce qui peut encore l'être.
Nous ne sommes pas jeunes, et n'avons plus la flexibilité d'autrefois...

Round trip around the area via Flagstaff and Williams, or the Grand Canyon (already done) – we’ll decide on the spot.

Old Route 66 in the city;
Big Texas Ranch Steak 😏.

JFK Museum;
Perot Museum;
West End district.
And through it all – the road, the road, and more road!!!
We’ll adapt day by day based on our mental and physical state (we’re not exactly spring chickens).

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏
Do you have any tips for a fun and doable itinerary over about 20–25 days with kids, without rushing?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. I had planned a trip to Colorado in 2021 but canceled due to COVID, so with time passing and my eldest’s high school graduation approaching fast, I figured it was now or never!

We’ll be alternating between house swaps, motels, and campgrounds. I’ve booked all the accommodations (except the campground at Bryce since sunset bookings open only 14 days in advance) and the first activities, as well as the most touristy ones.
I’m currently putting together my day-by-day roadbook and having some trouble planning certain days, like in LA or Las Vegas. Choosing hikes isn’t easy either—it’s tough to decide!

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:
- Mormon Rocks
- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

Is it pretty easy to navigate Detroit Airport to catch the connecting flight to Grand Rapids (domestic flight)? There are several of them who speak English well.

We’d like to walk to Eagle Falls and then Eagle Lake. I’ve spotted two parking lots that seem close to each other and give access to the trailhead. Where and how do we pay for entry to Emerald Bay State Park and Inspiration Point?
**Viewpoints on the East Side:**
Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I'm shocked by the price of the Upper Antelope Canyon tour—$175 for less than an hour… You might say, "if you can’t afford it…" But the real question is whether it’s really worth it, because $350 for two makes me feel like I’m getting ripped off. I’ve read there are trails to access the trailheads for Cinder Cone (11 km) and Warner Valley. Are these easy trails for an SUV?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

Travelers to the United States | Photo Now Mandatory Upon Entry and Exit | La Presse
I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!
