Je suis intervenu sur ce forum plusieurs fois sur la question des documents nécessaires (ESTA ou non) à un passage CANADA-USA par voie terrestre.
Comme cette année, je viens justement d’effectuer un passage CANADA->USA par voie terrestre, en étant arrivé par avion au Canada, j’ai pu expérimenter de facto la procédure.
J’ai d’ailleurs pu discuter avec un agent de l’immigration US de l’état actuel de la procédure d’entrée.
- Si on est déjà arrivé par avion aux USA, et qu’on est encore dans la période des 90 jours, aucune procédure particulière : On présente son passeport à la guérite, et il n’y a normalement aucune formalité supplémentaire.
Dans les autres cas, il faut sortir de la voiture et aller aux bureaux de l’immigration
- Si on n’a pas d’ESTA en cours de validité : On remplit le formulaire I94.
A noter que maintenant on peut pré-remplir son I94 sur le site : https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/#/apply-document. Dans les 7 jours précédents l’entrée aux USA, on renseigne le formulaire, et on donne le récépissé à l’agent de l’immigration qui retrouve les infos sur son terminal
Pas mal comme système car cela permet de le faire de manière sereine, sans stress et risques d’erreurs, et il y a un gain de temps appréciable.
- Si on a un ESTA en cours de validité, donc de moins de 2 ans, on le signale à l’agent de l’immigration et il retrouve toutes les données sur son terminal. (C’est sur ce point que je disais une c…rie dans mes précédentes réponses sur cette question)
Donc on évite l’étape remplissage du I94, mais la suite reste la même. :
On subit un mini interrogatoire : d’où vient-on, combien de temps aux USA, pourquoi vient-on, etc… Dans notre cas de vieux touristes et d’apparence parfaitement honnête, on sent bien que ces questions sont d’ailleurs plus de « courtoisie » ou par habitude, car l’agent de l‘immigration a tous nos vols d’arrivée et de départ sur son terminal.
Puis passage au lecteur d’empreintes et reconnaissance faciale.
Enfin paiement de 6 $ par personne.
A noter donc que cela confirme qu’il n’y a aucun intérêt particulier à demander un ESTA pour une simple entrée terrestre.

En mai/juin, arrivés aux USA par avion sous procédure ESTA nous avons franchi la frontière USA vers Canada à deux reprises en voiture (sans AVE) et sans problème particulier avec l'officier Canadien, qui outre les questions habituelles, nous a étonné lors d'un de ces passages en nous interrogeant plus précisément et spécifiquement sur la nourriture présente dans la voiture ... et les armes éventuelles dont nous disposions !!!
Dans le sens Canada vers USA, procédure "simplifiée" avec l'officier US comme tu l'indiques avec, toujours, les questions classiques de destination, durée , ...
Une petite remarque pratique au franchissement de la frontière et cela dans les deux sens ...
Les Officiers semblent bien aimer (et cela se comprend) avoir une vue de l'intérieur du véhicule afin de s'assurer du nombre de passagers présents (et de leur attitude ?)
J'ai donc constaté que les conducteurs de nombreux véhicules aux vitres fumées (mais pas seulement), baissaient systématiquement leurs vitres avant (bien sûr) mais aussi arrières côté conducteur afin que l'officier ait bien une vue complète de l'intérieur, que des passagers soient présents ou pas à l'arrière.
J'ai évidemment fait de même chaque fois .... bon à savoir, me semble t il

Dans ton dernier paragraphe tu parles de payer les 6$ alors que tu as un ESTA en cours de validité (donc soit arrivé aux USA au cours du même séjour par avion soit dans un séjour précédent mais ESTA encore valable). Chose qui m'étonne c'est que le 6$ correspond au ''frais'' liés à l'I94.
Ce qui voudrait dire que dans certains cas l'Esta ne dispenserait pas de l'I94 (alors qu'en théorie si ESTA valable, pas d'I94

L'ESTA ne dispense pas de l'I94 pour une arrivée aux USA par voie terrestre.
Mais il y a 2 cas :
Soit vs etes déjà arrivé aux USA par avion lors du même voyage, puis passé au Canada et de retour aux USA par voie terrestre. Vs etes encore dans les 90 jours admis, et le passage de l'immigration est donc simplifié.
Donc là pas de I94.
Soit vs etes arrivés par avion au Canada et c'est votre premiere entrée aux USA dans le voyage
Dans ce cas, Il faut donc toujours remplir le I94, faire les formalités d'immigration (empreintes, photo, questionnement) et payer 6$.
Le seul interet d'avoir un ESTA en cours de validité (soit de moins de 2 ans) est alors que maintenant, l'officier de l 'immigration peut en recuperer les données sur son terminal pour qu'on ait pas à le remplir manuellement.
Puisque vous avez l'air d'être un habitué : avec une voiture de location louée au Canada cela pose des problèmes pour la frontière ? Et les loueurs savez vous si c'est compliqué ?

Aucun probleme pour aller aux USA avec une voiture louée au Canada.
Je viens d'ailleurs de le faire.
Attention simplement aux loueurs . Aucun probleme avec les grands loueurs, AVIS, ALAMO, HERTZ, et leurs filiales.
Mais, DISCOUNT qui est un loueur souvent proposé par les agences de voyage (Authentik canada par ex) est beaucoup plus restrictif. Il demande un supplement, et annule le kilometrage illimité.
A eviter dionc, surtout qu'il est finalement plus cher que les autres.
Je ressors un vieux topic car je suis à la recherche d'une précision dont je n'ai, jusqu'à maintenant, pas trouvé la réponse...

Qu'en est-il dans le cas contraire ? Si l'on est déjà arrivé par voie terrestre aux USA (on a donc a priori rempli le I94, payé, et obtenu l'autorisation de 90 jours), qu'on quitte les USA par avion, et qu'on y retourne toujours par avion, toujours dans la période des 90 jours ?
Je suppose que l'ESTA n'est alors pas nécessaire dans la mesure où on a rempli le I94, mais j'aimerais en être sûre...
Pour info, si cela peut aider, l'idée serait grosso modo de faire :
- 1 mois au Canada
- 2 mois aux USA (avec arrivée par voie terrestre - ou maritime - entre Vancouver et Seatlle, sans ESTA car inutile)
- 3 semaines en Polynésie
- retour Polynésie > LAX > France (avant l'expiration des 90 jours, donc). Dans ce cas précis, l'escale à LAX nécessite-t-elle un ESTA ?
J'ajouterai, de par mon expérience, que:
1 - Ca peut prendre un certain temps à un petit poste frontière: il vaut mieux ne pas arriver juste après un car de touristes dans la même situation, j'ai eu aussi la séance de reboot du PC... rien de bien grave
2 - Il faut laisser son sac dans la voiture quand on est invité à rentrer dans le bureau (même un petit sac à mains rose porté par une maman avec deux petites filles est suspect de contenir une bombe ou une arme, la policière n'a pas dégainé mais presque...)

Tu n'as besoin de rien pour faire un vol domestique aux USA un fois que tu y es quelque soit la façon d'y enter
l'ESTA est la dispense de visa pour entrer aux USA (hormis TPS terrestres) pas une démarche pour prendre un avion
PS bien sur tu ne prends pas un vol SEA / ANC qui fait escale au Canada🙂

Tu n'auras pas besoin ni d'un nouveau ESTA ni le I-94 pour un vol interne. Tout ce qu'il faut c'est ton passeport pour montrer a la securite a l'aeroport de Seattle. ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) ne s'occupe pas de vols interieurs.
Le I94W, vous le remplirez à la frontière. Vous aurez le tampon habituel + un bout du carton vert I94W agrafé, qui sera enlevé quand vous repartirez (si ma mémoire est bonne).

Je ne sais pas. Le passeport sera necessaire seulement comme identification a l'employe de la TSA (Transportation Safety Administration) qui s'occupe de la securite a l'aeroport. C'est la preuve que t'es la meme personne qui a son nom sur la carte d'embarquement pour son vol a Anchorage.
Attention: Je trouvais les files de securite a SEA souvent tres, tres longues.

non impossible de dire pour un passage "routier" celui que j'ai fait c'était Canada Ontario / USA ... disons 10 mn
- un premier contrôle, dans une simple guérite comme partout ailleurs, du passeport l'agent vérifie si tu n'es pas indésirable 🙂... les "locaux" passaient directement
- ensuite étant français on se gare sur le coté du bâtiment et on va dans le bureau remplir l'I94 sortir les $$$ ... la on était les seuls donc rapide

la même chose que n'importe ou ... tu as fait un overstay lors d'un précédent séjour... tu es interdit de séjour pour n'importe quelle raison... tu passes avec un nouveau passeport pensant être devenu "blanc comme neige" par exemple pour effacer les passages dans un pays ou le VWP /ESTA n'est pas accordé et le visa est obligatoire ... l'agent d'immigration te soupçonne de venir pour travailler ..... je te laisse continuer la liste
il scan ton passeport regarde son écran et ...

I’m planning a trip from France to Alberta/British Columbia, and I’m unsure about which bank card to use for the security deposit with the rental company (I’m thinking of going with AVIS).
I contacted Avis Canada, and they told me a credit card is absolutely required. I asked my bank for a credit card (a *real* credit card), but they only offered me a deferred debit card.
My question: For a rental with Avis Canada, is a Gold International Mastercard deferred debit card usable for the security deposit needed to finalize the rental? Is the "CREDIT" label enough? (Some cards say "CREDIT" and others say "CARTE DE CREDIT"—seems minor, but it’s actually a big deal in how the card works.)
I’ve seen conflicting info everywhere I look... My bank says it’s *usually* okay (the deferred debit card), while Avis Canada insists it *must* be a credit card, not debit—even when I mention the deferred debit card.
I know the whole credit card concept is already confusing, and on top of that, some sites say a deferred debit card counts as a credit card, while others say it doesn’t.

I’ll explain my situation.
Unfortunately, I lost my passport, and I only realized it two weeks before my departure for a humanitarian mission in Libya. I’m a nurse, and this mission really means a lot to me.
First, I applied for an emergency passport, but it was denied by the Val-d'Oise prefecture on the grounds that a planned humanitarian mission wasn’t considered an urgent reason.
So, I submitted a biometric passport application on July 20th. Since then, the tracking has been stuck, and the town hall can’t (or won’t) give me any clear information. Every time I call, I get a different story. The last update I received was that the passport had been produced since July 23rd with a status of "about to be shipped," but nothing since then.
I’ve managed to push my departure back to next Tuesday at the latest, but I’m starting to really panic.
Have any of you submitted an application around July 20th, especially in Val-d'Oise (95)? How long did you wait between the passport being produced and it being available at the town hall? Is it normal for this step to take this long?
This mission means so much to me. I had everything organized, and I’m also supposed to attend a friend’s wedding right after near the border.

I’m a bit embarrassed because I need to travel to Quebec from February 27th to March 13th. I’m a regular visitor to Canada—this will be my 10th trip since 1997, plus a year as a permanent resident (2000–2001) and a cross-country run from Vancouver to Halifax in 2011. So, I’m definitely not a terrorist!
But since our last trip in July 2015, they’ve introduced this eTA thing. Seems more like a way to make money than to actually secure Canada, if you ask me, but anyway, that’s not the point.
I applied for an eTA for myself, my wife, and our two kids. They all got approved within hours, but not me! I was asked to create a GC key and then an IRCC account, which I did. Normally, you get news within 72 hours, but since Monday, January 15th, nothing!
In the "message" section of the account, it says "explanation letter (required)" with a deadline of January 25th, but I can’t find any explanation anywhere—despite searching the Canadian government website and Google. No links, nothing!
I’ve emailed them but haven’t heard back yet. I’m thinking of calling the Canadian embassy in Paris tomorrow. Even though I’m not stressing yet, it’d be a bummer if everyone else got to go without me!
If anyone’s had this issue before or knows what this explanation letter is about, I’d love to hear more.

I bought a one-way flight (Ryanair) and a return flight (EasyJet) to spend a week in Morocco in April.
My passport expires 3 weeks after the return date.
Some websites say the passport must be valid for 3 months at the time of entry.
However, it will still be valid both on entry and return, but its validity will only be 1 month at the time of entry (and 3 weeks on the return date, everything prepaid).
It's an individual family trip.
The consulate can't give me an answer—they're still looking into it (really!)
Last year, we stayed for 3 months in Thailand, north of Khao Lak, and were able to benefit from the 2-month visa exemption, renewable for one month by going to Takua Pa to validate a 1-month extension (1,900 baht).
This year, it’s a disaster for us—not only were we planning a 4-month stay, adding a visa run in between (which some say is quite risky), but the law is apparently changing in the coming months with the return of the 1-month exemption (plus the usual 1-month option). So, we looked into applying for a 6-month multiple-entry visa, allowing a maximum of 60 consecutive days in Thailand. However, I can’t find anywhere the minimum time required outside Thailand between two stays—do any of you have an idea?

As a French national, I need to obtain a short-stay visa that can be converted to a long-stay one. To do this, I have to send the required documents to the Madagascar embassy in Paris.
No issues with that procedure so far.
If I get this visa, once I arrive in Madagascar, I’ll need to provide the same documents to the Ministry of the Interior in Anosy. I’m trying to find an email address or website for the Ministry to check which documents I need to submit (I think they ask for additional ones).

I’d like to know if anyone has already applied for a private visa to Russia with an invitation from a Russian resident.
I traveled earlier this year with an e-visa, but since I want to stay longer, I’ll be visiting my friend who lives in eastern Russia.
For the visa application, does the invitation need to be on an official paper form issued by the Russian ministry? And most importantly, do I need to present the original for the application, or is there an electronic version that can be sent directly to the consulate in France?

I filled out the B2 form to apply for a visa, created an account on Atvis to pay the visa fees and schedule a meet-up, but every time I try to pay with my Boursobank Visa 1st card, they refuse the payment with a message telling me to check my details (address), even though everything is correct. Does anyone know why this is happening, or maybe they don’t accept Visa cards? Are you aware of this?

Paper documents might not be accepted.

I’ve read that China may ask for proof of exit within 30 days (flight ticket or other reservation). Since we’d be leaving by land, I’m wondering how this works in practice.

My wife and I are heading to the US.
On her ticket, it only has her maiden name (e.g., Martine DUPOND).
On her passport, it’s written as Martine DUPOND épouse AVRY.
No issues for travel, I hope I did the right thing with the ticket?
Then for the ESTA, is just Martine DUPOND enough, or do I need to include the "épouse AVRY" part like on the passport?
