We’re a family with two kids who’ll be 3½ and 6½ years old at the time of the trip. We live in the city, and the little ones aren’t big hikers in nature, but they’re pretty cool with transportation. Travel month: May 2026 for 3 weeks (round trip) What we’re looking for: a relaxed trip combining nature, culture, beautiful beaches with snorkeling, and sunshine! We want to take our time with the kids and avoid driving 6 hours every couple of days. We’ve traveled as a couple before but not much with the kids (in Europe, by car).

Choices: I ruled out Mexico for various reasons. I’d also dismissed Indonesia because it seemed more tiring with kids in terms of transportation, but it’s back in my top 2 now! 😊 I also crossed off Sri Lanka because of the monsoon on the west coast in May. So, I’m left with Malaysia (KL-Malacca-Selangor-Borneo Sabah-Perhentian Islands area) or Java (Yogyakarta-Bromo-Karimunjawa Islands)... This list isn’t exhaustive—just some rough ideas.

Budget-wise, we’d like to stay in small hotels with pools for under 100 € in cities, but no need for a pool at the beach. Thanks in advance for your tips! Hélène

We’re planning a 1-month trip this summer (August) to Indonesia, but we’re unsure which island would suit us best. We’ve already been to Bali and don’t want to go back. We land in Jakarta and plan to fly to one or two islands the next day. We especially love the sea and snorkeling. We’ve already visited plenty of temples, mountain hikes (I can’t do those anymore after a serious fracture), and seen orangutans. As you’ve probably guessed, our thing is the big blue and waterfalls. So, what to choose between Lombok, Sulawesi, Flores, and Sumatra for a month? Which island is the most beach and snorkeling-focused based on your experience? We initially planned to visit Bali, Komodo, and Flores, but after looking into it more, we came across Sumatra, which is less touristy... a real plus for us. However, skipping Bali might be a shame.

I was wondering if spending 12 days in Sumatra and finishing with about 7 days in Bali is a doable plan.

I’m planning a trip to Indonesia between June and August 2025. I’ll be traveling solo with my two daughters, ages 9 and 13, for 7 weeks, and then solo without them for another 3 weeks.

This trip has a special meaning for me—I’ve got a break between my soon-to-be former job and launching my business. It’s my first big solo trip outside Europe with just my girls, and I’m heading to Indonesia because I’ve dreamed of discovering Bali since I was 12 (though I’m *terrified* of mass tourism!). Also, five years ago, I decided to limit myself to one flight every 10 years—this is my "big 40" trip, and it’s really important to me. I’ll probably never return to Indonesia after this.

Beyond that, I’d love to immerse myself in Balinese culture. For the rest of the trip, I’m especially drawn to nature and its grandeur. Basically, outside of Bali, I’d love to see breathtaking natural landscapes that are totally different from what I can find in Europe. I’d also love to spot some endemic wildlife (which my girls would find exciting too!). And if I can squeeze in a few "chill" days to just relax or go snorkeling in a nice, quiet spot, I’m all for it.

I’d love your advice, especially since I’d like to start in Bali (we’re arriving around June 20th—I’m hoping to avoid the peak tourist crowds from the Northern Hemisphere summer break).

I’m planning my first trip to Asia next summer with my partner and our daughter, who’ll be 3 and a half at the time, for 4 weeks (maybe 5).

I’ve heard that the timing is better for visiting Indonesia, but I’m hesitant because Thailand seems more accessible, and I’m worried that traveling to Indonesia during high season might be less enjoyable and a lot more expensive due to the number of tourists. We love cultural sites as much as natural ones, and we’re big foodies. We’re not necessarily looking for luxury and tend to take our time, travel by public transport, and look for accommodations with a good value for money—though we do occasionally splurge on a high-end restaurant.

I’m also wondering when and where to buy flight tickets and how comfortable the journey will be (especially for our daughter) if we fly with Thai Airways or Garuda.

Nous voyageons avec 2 enfants qui auront l'été prochain (juillet-août 2020) 2 ans 1/2 et 4 ans 1/2, je m'interroge sur la possibilité d'un voyage en Indonésie. Ceux-ci sont habitués aux voyages et aux sacs porteurs. Je souhaite éviter Java et Bali - nous avons peur du monde, nous sommes du style ermites et apprécions surtout la nature et les beaux paysages, aimons randonner même si nous avons dû ralentir le rythme depuis que 2 écureuils nous suivent. Nous aimerions éviter les longs déplacements d'autant que possible, même si je suis conscient qu'il y en aura un peu.

Mes questions, sur 3 ou 4 semaines de voyage, est-il possible d'envisager à un rythme doux (siestes obligent) un séjour sur Lombok - Gili (mon idée de départ) ou sur Sumatra (plus je lis des choses sur Sumatra, plus ça me tente) ou d'autres îles comme Florès - Komodo (peut-être moins pratique) ? Niveau santé il ne me semble pas y avoir de très gros risques sanitaires mais qu'est-il faisable en cas de problème de santé des enfants ?

Nous partons en famille avec nos 2 enfants de 8 et 10 ans cet été en Indonésie. Nous avons déjà réservé nos billets (Jakarta). Nous avons 20 jours sur place et hésitons beaucoup entre les 3 destinations ci-dessous : - Sulawesi Nord - Sulawesi Sud - Java/Flores

Nous souhaitons éviter de faire beaucoup de route ; nous aimons la plage, le snorkeling, la plongée sous-marine, les sites naturels, le surf, le dépaysement, les rencontres avec la population, les balades, la jungle, les animaux. Nous attendrons que nos enfants grandisent pour la partie culturelle (temple, etc). Mais nous ne sommes pas fermés à quelques visites incontournables bien sur.

Voila, si vous pouvez m'apporter vos témoignages, cela m'aidera sans aucun doute à choisir notre destination.

De retour de voyage à Bali, nous avons eu la joie de faire du snorkeling aux îles Gili (air) et de nager avec les tortues de mer. Certains spécimens mesurant pas loin de 2 mètres. Vraiment un moment magique. Hélas, la promenade sur l'île (pourtant considérée comme la plus "famille" des 3 trois Gili, donc la plus calme) nous a montré à quel point la pollution est présente. Que de sachets en plastiques, tubes (dentifrice) et autres pailles et bouteilles en PET échoué sur les plages. On les compte par dizaine sur quelques centaines de mètres de balade sur la plage. Je n'ose pas imaginer l'état des îles non touristiques...

Hi there, I’m really sorry if this question has already been asked several times—I’ve been scouring blogs, forums, and various sites for a while now, but I still have some more specific questions for our trip...

First off, we’re a family of four with two kids aged 10 and 14. We’ve already been to Thailand and Laos five times with them (each trip lasting a month or six weeks), and we’re huge Thailand lovers, but this year we’d like to discover Indonesia, which we don’t know at all (for a duration of 4 or 5 weeks between late June and late July). We travel pretty "roots" style with a budget of 100 € per day and avoid touristy areas as much as possible. We get around using local transport, rent scooters, and take our time (for a one-month trip, we usually visit 4 destinations to really soak it in). So here are my upcoming questions:

For a first visit, I wanted to focus on a single island—Lombok—by taking a flight from Paris to Denpasar and then a boat to Lombok. Do you think the following route would work? - Kuta Lombok - Gili Gede - Gili Meno - Tetebatu

I saw there’s a local boat to Lombok—has anyone here taken it before? For those who’ve been there during this period, do you know if Gili Meno and Gili Gede get crowded, or should we focus more on the coasts? To get between these spots, are there buses, or do we need to take private taxis? As for accommodations, we’re used to booking triple rooms for all four of us in Thailand. For those who travel with kids, do you know if that’s doable in Indonesia, or should we book two double rooms instead?

Last (slightly silly) question: We want to go to Indonesia because our son dreams of seeing beautiful marine life while snorkeling—I think Lombok is a good choice for that. But my daughter is a huge fan of those "knick-knack" markets full of Chinese trinkets that you find all over Thailand. Do you know if Lombok has any day or night markets where we could go?

Nous ne sommes pas fan de la "foule" et ce sera notre voyage de noces.

Nous souhaiterions un hôtel (bungalow de preference) proche de la plage pour aller faire du snorkeling directement sans prendre de taxi/scooter.

Bonjour, Nous partons chaque année en Asie pour le travail et nous avons décidé de partir 3 semaines en vacances mi fevrier decouvrir les philippines et c 'est là que la galère commence dans le choix de l 'itinéraire après avoir lu moults blogs.... Nous voulons decouvrir le pays mais de facon tranquille, nous voulons limiter les grands trajets sur route et aussi sur mer(j 'ai le mal de mer).Nous sommes aussi fan de snorkeling. J'avais pensé aller sur bohol pour decouvrir les terres et aller sur balicasag pour le snorkel et voir les dauphins le reve de ma fille.Tout le monde parle d'Apo pour les tortues;j'étais très tentée mais beaucoup de monde parle qu'il y a aussi pas mal de serpents et nous sommes tous des phobiques donc très refroidis.Y a t il des lieux de snorkel sympa ou voir des tortues sans grande probabilité de tomber sur ces sales bestioles!!!! J'ai lu aussi que le snorkel n 'était pas excellent aux philippines du fait des courants et de la clarté de l'eau, qu'en pensez vous?Nous avons fait sulawesi l'année derniere et nous avons été enchantés par le snorkel. Après 1 semaine bohol je pensais 1 semaine Siquijor et après 1 semaine Negros ?ou Cebu(Pescador, Badian, Moalboal)? Derniere interrogation pour ce soir:aller à Coron ou pas sur 3ou 4 jours avant d 'aller ds les Visayas:peur du manque de temps et surtout budget ca à l'air tres cher:hebergement et island hopping(pas très emballée par l'usine à touristes).Nous avons déjà fait le sud de la Thailande, le Vietnam et L'Indonésie:est ce que les paysages sont un cran dessus et si oui quelle est la meilleure excursion à faire de facon tranquille. Our Bali-Lombok trip is taking shape, but we’d love to wrap up the stay with at least a solid week of snorkeling somewhere the coral is still in great condition. In your opinion, are the Gili Secrets in southern Lombok better than Flores Island, where there are supposedly amazing underwater landscapes?

Hi there, We’re planning a solid six-week trip (July/August) to Sulawesi with our two kids, aged 5 and 7. I’ve been browsing various forums and have a lot of questions:

Can we "improvise"? We love traveling without planning every step, going with the flow based on fatigue, encounters, and discoveries. So, can we book NO accommodations in advance (except maybe our arrival in Makassar)? On the Togian Islands—is that possible? Same question—can we "improvise" local transport like buses, taxis, or scooter rentals, and book flight tickets (e.g., Makassar-Luwuk) or ferry tickets just a few days ahead? Is it safe enough to travel by scooter for day trips with the kids? Do they generally have child-sized helmets available? We’re struggling to map out an itinerary. Our priorities are hiking (trekking) in the Mamasa Valley and Toraja region, and seeing at least one volcano. Then, of course, we’d love to enjoy the water—easy snorkeling. The Togian Islands look dreamy, but are they the best for "easy" snorkeling (from the beach) with young kids? The journey there is long, too. The Banggai Islands look amazing—could they be a good alternative to the Togian Islands (where finding accommodation might be trickier)? Any feedback?

Other questions: My oldest is crazy about crystals and geology. Has anyone explored the karst region north of Makassar? I also just learned there’s a volcano in the Togian Islands—Una Una (Colo Volcano). Any feedback on that?

Je pars en Sulawesi au mois de mai avec mon "niveau 1 plongée" en poche. (max 20m ) Savez-vous s'il est possible de voir de belles choses (notamment des tortues) à cette profondeur ?(qui n'est pas énorme, je sais...) car dans ce cas j'irai à Bunaken.

L'an dernier, j'y suis allée en tant que "snorkeleuse" et le Resort ne s'est absolument pas occupé de nous ! nous étions transparentes et presque indésirables ... donc, très déçues évidemment. Cette fois-ci, j'espère que ça ira...

J'ai donc regardé partout sur le net et sur les posts mais en tant que "nouvelle plongeuse", je ne sais pas trop à quel Resort ou Club je dois me fier, sachant que je vais quand même faire du snorkeling aussi....

I’m traveling with a buddy, and we don’t really want to spend all our time moving around, so if you have recommendations for one area that’s better than others for diving, that’d be great! What do you think are the best diving sites? (I’d appreciate an overview of the country so I can decide based on that.) Compared to my buddy, I love macro photography (nudibranchs, etc.), so I’d also love any tips on that. As part of a four-month world trip with our kids (ages 6, 12, and 13), we’ll be spending four weeks in Indonesia. Choosing destinations is so tough because everything is just so appealing! We’ll be spending some time on Java and will likely make a "quick trip" to Borneo for the orangutan reserve. We also want to experience Bali’s culture and the small islands of the Lesser Sundas, with their incredible marine life... but which ones should we prioritize? For a few days of diving and relaxation, do you think we should go for Nusa Penida, the Gili Islands, or Moyo Island? Is Sumbawa complicated to explore? Is it worth taking the time to visit? Can it be crossed by car to then reach Komodo National Park? Anyway, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Our goal is to avoid overly touristy spots (but not places that feel too unsafe with the kids), to discover local culture and villages, and to be amazed both underwater and above. After traveling solo across Iran and the Stan countries from one end to the other,

this time I’m heading to Southeast Asia with my wife and our 3-year-old.

I went to the Philippines almost 10 years ago and actually met some forum members there. It was love at first sight.

I’ve booked tickets from January 10 to March 31 for Bangkok (amazing price from Milan). I was thinking of spending: 3 weeks in Thailand 3 weeks in Vietnam 1 month in the Philippines.

Don’t worry, I won’t spam the forum with a thousand messages asking how to get from point A to point B :)))

I’m reaching out to the experts or regulars here for suggestions and ideas!

For Thailand, Obviously, some beautiful beaches wouldn’t hurt for a bit of relaxation. I was thinking of Koh Phayam or Koh Kood (or Koh Chang). If anyone knows a nice spot, even if it’s not on an island, I’m all ears. It’s tricky to ask this for Thailand, but I’m looking for a bit of tranquility (so I’ll probably avoid Phuket, Koh Samui, etc.). (Though I know sometimes you just need to get off the beaten path to find some peace, but I’m not sure if that’s the case in Thailand.)

Vietnam—I have no idea!! A friend mentioned Danang, which could be a good base to explore the countryside/inland areas.

And the Philippines—I had a huge crush on the country (Bantayan, Dumaguete, Sipalay, Siquijor) and really want to go back, maybe to new places/islands.

I have one constraint: We’ll stay in the same place each time. With a kid, it’s tough to move every 2 days (unlike when I’m solo), and I hope this will let us connect with locals by staying put for 3 weeks at a time. (Plus, my budget is pretty tight, so the idea is to negotiate a good price for 3 weeks in the same accommodation.) (My rough budget is 1000 € per month for the three of us: 450 € for lodging, 450 € for food, and 100 € for a scooter. This doesn’t include boat, bus, etc. transfers.)

If you have any ideas, tips, or experiences to share, I’m all ears! I’m totally open to shortening or extending our stays in each country, even if it means skipping one of the three.
