We’d also like to avoid overly long distances and limit ourselves to a maximum of one internal flight. For the last three days, we’d love to end the trip on a stunning beach with the chance to swim with manta rays. J'aimerais avoir une idée du parcours à faire sur l’île de Java.

A Bali j'ai aimé le nord de Ubud (Tegalaland) mais pas du tout le sud. Ubud c'est limite "overbooké" mais ça passe encore... Cette fois-ci ce sera le Nord de Bali.

Concernant Lombok je ne connais pas du tout...

A vrai dire la grande interrogation pour le moment c'est JAVA... J'ai juste été voir le Kawa Ijen de nuit en 2016 mais sinon aucune connaissance de l’île..

Si vous avez un conseil de parcours sympa sur Java, je prends...

Je pars le 31 août pour 2 mois en Indonésie. Mon vol aller arrive à Jakarta le 1er septembre et pour le retour, je quitte l'Indonésie par Bali le 30 octobre avant une escale de 4 jours à Bangkok.

J'ai prévu de commencer par au moins une journée complète à Jakarta en essayant de faire du couchsurfing là-bas. Cependant je n'ai pas l'intention d'y passer plus de temps. J'ai remarqué que peu de voyageurs passent du temps dans l'Ouest de Java. Néanmoins, j'ai tout de même envie de découvrir la partie occidentale de Java. D'après mes informations, il n'est pas possible d'aller au Krakatau. Par contre, j'ai vu qu'il y le volcan Gede/Pagrango près de Bogor qui a l'air intéressant même s'il ne figure pas dans les circuits touristiques traditionnels. Après j'ai repéré Pangandaran d'où il est possible d'aller au Green Canyon et d'aller en bâteau jusqu'à Cilacap en longeant notamment Nusa Kambangan. Il y aurait des bus de Cilacap à Yogyakarta. Dans la région de Yogyakarta, il y a pas mal de choses à faire entre la visite des sites de Borodubur et Prambanan, les villes de Solo et Yogyakarta et peut être le volcan Merapi même si cela est compromis compte-tenu de l'activité éruptive. Ça pourra être la bonne étape pour faire la prolongation du visa. Ensuite je compte aller aux volcans Bromo et Kawah Ijen avant d'aller à Bali. Concernant les trains, j'ai beaucoup lu qu'il fallait réserver en avance mais cela se vérifie-t-il un jour de semaine en septembre ? Ça m'arrangerait bien de ne pas avoir à réserver maintenant.

A Bali, j'ai surtout envie de profiter de l'aspect culturel et donc de visiter les principaux temples. Apparemment, il y a des plages bien plus belles sur des îles voisines telles que les Gili, Lombok, ou même Nusa Penida et Lembongan. J'ai pu voir notamment que certains voyageurs ont adoré Bali alors que d'autres ont détesté. Je ne compte donc pas rester très longtemps à Bali. Ça m'arrangerait donc de faire plutôt le renouvellement du visa ailleurs qu'à Bali. Concernant les îles Gili, je ne sais pas si je vais y aller vu que j'ai lu que c'est plus intéressant du côté du parc du Komodo.

Ensuite, je vais à Lombok où j'ai l'intention de faire l'ascension du Rinjani et profiter des plages du Sud. Après je vais à Sumbawa car je tiens à faire l'ascension du Tambora. Concernant ces 2 volcans, je sais qu'il faut passer par une agence. Je me demande s'il faut que je réserve avec une agence rapidement ou si je pourrais voir sur place.

Ensuite, direction Flores où je compte bien profiter du parc national Komodo pour voir les varans ainsi que les fonds marins avant sa fermeture en janvier. Ensuite je compte bien aller plus à l'Est sur Flores pour l'ascension du volcan Kelimutu et les plages en allant jusqu'à Maumere puis à Ende ferry pour Sumba afin de découvrir une île vraiment différente des autres. Par contre, j'ai cru lire qu'il pouvait y avoir des crocodiles marins à Sumba et surtout au Timor. C'est vrai ? Ma dernière question concerne le billet d'avion entre Sumba et Bali : vaut-il mieux partir la veille du vol Bali-Bangkok pour faire face aux aléas des vols intérieurs indonésiens. Par ailleurs est-il possible envisageable de prendre des billets d'avion Sumba-Bali ou Flores-Bali à la dernière minute (notamment si je décide de ne finalement pas aller à Sumba) ?

Par ailleurs, je précise que je n'ai pas le permis de conduire ni même de permis scooter donc je me déplacerai en transports publics ou en véhicule loué avec chauffeur comme cela est possible en Indonésie. Je me demande s'il est possible de louer à un endroit et de restituer dans un autre lieu et s'il faut réserver en avance ce genre de locations. Je suis également en plein apprentissage de l'indonésien.

Family of 4—2 adults and 2 kids (11 and 15) who are well-traveled. We’re planning a 15-day trip to Indonesia and would love your thoughts on our itinerary. We love discovering local culture, food (!!), seeing beautiful landscapes, and keeping an active pace. We’re not the type to lounge on the beach for 5 hours or spend ages by the pool when we’re halfway across the world. Also, we try to avoid places "ruined" by mass tourism (like Holbox in Mexico, which we loved 10 years ago but not at all on our last visit, or Phi Phi in Thailand, completely destroyed by mass tourism).

Special note: we love traveling by train :)

Here’s what we’ve planned so far:

**Day 4** Train to Jombang, then driver/bus to the Bromo area. Overnight stay.

**Day 5** Sunrise at Bromo, exploring the volcano and sea of sand. Relax in the afternoon.

**Day 6** Travel to eastern Java, then train, ferry, and road to reach Sidemen in Bali.

**Day 7** Sidemen

**Day 8** Sidemen

**Day 9** Sidemen

**Day 10** Transfer to Gili Air (car to the port + fast boat?)

**Day 11** Gili Air

**Day 12** Gili Air

**Day 13** Transfer to Ubud

**Day 14** Ubud

**Day 15** Return to Bali airport, flight to Jakarta, then international flight.

Does this itinerary seem coherent for a family? Does it feel too packed or well-balanced? Would you make any changes to certain stops, durations, or transfers?

J'ai prévu de voyager 2 semaines et quelques jours en plus (billet d'avion retour pas encore réservé, je souhaite terminer mon itinéraire avant) en Indonésie. Mon avion arrive à Denpensar et j'aimerais prendre mon retour de cet aéroport aussi. (question logistique car je vais y laisser une valise).

J'avais prévu d'aller à JAVA environ 3jours (départ et retour à Bali), mais vu le temps de trajet et le coût (environ 300€ pour un tour organisé, que je pense plus pratique puisque je suis seule), je me demande si cela en vaut vraiment la peine. Je voulais aussi faire Menang et le village coloré mais je crois que ce n'est pas à côté des volcans de Java. J'aimerais donc avoir des retour d'expériences, est ce que je devrais aller à JAVA? Ou Mount Batur suffit? Sachant que je voulais aussi aller à Lombok et gili island... Je n'ai que deux semaine (et demi peut être), et je ne sais pas s'il vaut mieux faire le plus possible ou se concentrer sur quelques coins! Mais ce que je veux c'est voir des paysages variés et profiter le plus possible de ce voyage qui ne se reproduira pas de si tôt. Aussi pour Java est ce que je peux trouver moins cher ? Le trajet ne me gêne pas forcément, il me suffit de voyager de nuit pour ne pas perdre trop de temps mais je trouve le budget très élevé pour 3jours.. si vous connaissez des agences ou d'autres moyens de trouver moins cher je suis preneuse !

Hey everyone, I travel quite a bit, and I’m here to share my thoughts about an upcoming trip to Indonesia, specifically the Togian Islands.

I’m planning to go for 3 or 4 weeks in July-August and looking for a sunny destination that’s not too expensive (flights + cost of living), with varied points of interest. About fifteen years ago, I had planned a trip to the Togian Islands, but it didn’t happen, so I’m revisiting this destination (Sulawesi, Toraja country) + maybe others? Given that in Indonesia, I’ve already done volcanoes in Java, Bali, part of Lombok, and the Gili Islands. The issue is that I’ve read some posts about the plastic waste problems around the Togians, and it seems like they’re not the paradise islands they once were.

So, I have a few questions: I’d love to hear recent feedback from travelers who’ve been to the Togians to get an objective opinion (?) or if you’d recommend other paradise-like islands in Indonesia (not overcrowded).

If you confirm that it’s still an exceptional destination, what did you pair it with? The Moluccas and which islands in particular? Or Flores/Komodo? For my part, I don’t scuba dive—just snorkeling.

Finally, if you have other dream-island destinations (affordable and sunny), I’m all ears.

J'ai beaucoup suivi ce forum et ses membres formidables, merci beaucoup à vous pour tous vos retours d'expériences et propositions, c'est grâce à vous que j'ai visité beaucoup de lieux en Indonésie. Je suis un féru d'Indonésie depuis 2012 je souhaite organiser un trip de 3 semaines moyennement rythmé en transports avec mon meilleur pote.

J'ai déjà visité West Java (Jakarta, Bogor, Bandung, Kawah Putih et campagnes environnantes ) - Central Java (Yogja, Temples Hindous), Bali et ses Nusa, Lombok et ses Gili, Komodo, West Timur, Sumatra (Padang, Medan, Banda Aceh, Pulau Weh) et les Togean (Sulawesi). Il faudrait donc exclure ces endroits.

Je suis preneur de tout itinéraire sympa (en dehors de ce que j'ai déjà fait) voici notre style de voyage :

Bon rythme mais pas trop effrené non plus, l'avion est toujours privilégié. Pour le confort moyen +, faut que ce soit propre c'est tout. Diving Snorkeling, 1 Jungle Trek , lieux culturels (s'ils existent), 1 ou 2 villes sympa max, 1 volcan à faire

Voici ma proposition de parcours je reste à votre écoute pour toute remarques :

Semaine 1 :

Arrivée Manado ( 2 jours de repos et visite ville) après c'est le flou conseillez-vous Tangkoko pour un beau trek en jungle et voir les primates ? Par rapport aux îles on veut éviter Bunaken, que recommandez-vous entre Bangka, Talisei et Lembeh pour seulement 2/3 jours ? (Diving, Plages de qualité, un peu de vie ?)

Semaine 2 :

Hésitation entre une semaine dans la région d'Ambon et 1 semaine dans la région de Ternate. Pour ceux qui l'ont fait que recommandez-vous de faire en 1 semaine dans l'un de ces coins ?

Semaine 3 :

Puis il nous restera 3 jours pour se reposer, là on voudrait un seul coin (une seule plage) pas loin d'un aéroport pour rentrer sur Jakarta puis Paris (généralement c'est Canggu Bali) que me conseilleriez-vous pour changer ? Sumbawa ?

It’s such a pleasure to be back on VoyageForum after so many years. A long time ago, I used it to plan and share a wonderful trip between Namibia and Botswana.

This time, I’m preparing a family trip for next summer (two parents, a 15-year-old boy, and an 11-year-old girl) that’ll be our big Christmas gift. I already have the flight tickets: we arrive in Denpasar on July 13th and return from Singapore on August 12th.

Our main focus is Indonesia, but since we don’t often get the chance to travel this far, I wanted to take the opportunity to stop in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore on the way back. It’ll give my kids—especially my son, who’s passionate about geography—a taste of these two major cities.

We prefer quiet spots (no need for party vibes or trendy places), though the girls (yes, there are two of them!) still enjoy discovering local crafts, souvenir shops, and the like. We don’t mind organizing things ourselves—I actually love doing that—and I assumed it’d be easy to arrange transport between hotels by booking through them. We’re not chasing cultural discoveries (one beautiful temple is enough; no need to see all 35, even if they’re stunning).

After reading tons of websites, guides, and forum posts, I’ve put together an itinerary I’d love to get your thoughts on. It’s already changed many times… and I’m sure it’ll change again! The goal is to avoid obvious mistakes, see if we’re trying to do too much, or if some places aren’t worth the effort. Here’s what it looks like so far:

- **Day 1**: Arrival in Denpasar in the late afternoon. Transport to a hotel outside Denpasar.

- **Days 2–5 (4 days)**: Bali. We’d like to stay in one or two quiet spots, away from the southern area, to explore the famous rice terraces, temples, and maybe do some light hiking.

- **Day 6**: Transfer to Lombok by fast ferry from Padang Bai (to avoid going back to the busy southern port, since I’ve heard traffic there is chaotic).

- **Days 6–11 (5 days)**: Lombok. We’d especially like to climb Mount Rinjani (we’re in good enough shape for it) and spend 2–3 days in a nice, quiet seaside spot (I was thinking of the southern Gilis near Lembar or the beautiful beaches in the south of the island).

- **Day 11**: Flight from Lombok Airport to Labuan Bajo.

- **Days 12–14**: 3-day/2-night cruise to Rinca and the various "hot spots" of Komodo National Park.

- **Day 15**: Labuan Bajo. I was thinking of doing a beginner’s diving excursion.

- **Day 16**: Flight back to Denpasar, then transfer to Banyuwangi by bus/boat (apparently possible via Express Bahari).

- **Day 17**: Morning visit to Ijen Crater, then return to the same hotel to relax for the rest of the day.

- **Day 18**: Transfer to a base camp for a sunrise visit to Mount Bromo on Day 19. - **Day 19**: Visit Bromo. We’d like to spend the whole day there to enjoy the site once most people have left. - **Day 20**: Transfer to Surabaya or Yogyakarta. - **Day 21**: Flight to Medan, then transfer to Bukit Lawang. - **Days 22–25**: Bukit Lawang. Jungle trek for 2–3 days and some downtime for 1–2 days. - **Day 23**: Transfer to Dumai. - **Day 25**: Boat from Dumai to Malacca.

The rest isn’t as relevant here.

I have a few big doubts, especially: - Is it worth spending 4 days in Bali and 5 in Lombok, or would it be better to focus on just one island? If so, we’d probably lean toward Lombok—it seems quieter, and Rinjani is calling our name…

- I’m counting on the Komodo trip to explore the islands and marine life in the area. It sounds like a true paradise (manta rays, turtles, Komodo dragons…). From what I’ve read, snorkeling in Bali or Lombok doesn’t offer the same experiences. Do you think that’s really the case? I’ve seen some unflattering comments about Labuan Bajo… Originally, I wanted to do the Lombok–Flores crossing by boat, but the "mandatory" whale shark stop in Sumbawa seems controversial, so I ruled it out.

- For the stretch between Days 16 and 21, I’m not sure about the best way to organize things to enjoy Ijen and Bromo without being in constant rush mode or sleeping for just 3 days. I can’t decide whether to stay near the crater (the hotels seem basic—is it worth spending 2 nights there?) or farther away, even if it means more travel. I’ve also considered skipping Bromo to attempt the Semeru climb. There are also some nice spice plantations nearby (Margo Utomo in Kalibaru). Any thoughts?

In early July, we’re heading to Indonesia for a solid three weeks as a family (my partner and I are in our fifties, and we have two daughters aged 17 and 20). We’ll be arriving and departing from Denpasar. Our itinerary is still entirely up in the air, and we’d like to explore islands other than Bali (we’ve already been there a few years ago).

I’d love to gather your tips and great recommendations to help us plan our route. For now, we’re thinking of visiting Lombok, Flores, and the Komodo archipelago. Here are some of our questions: - I visited Lombok myself back in 1999. I loved it, but I’ve been reading very mixed reviews in recent travel journals. Some are as enthusiastic as I was back then, while others are much more lukewarm (due to the overly strict and visible influence of the island’s governor on the population and because of massive hotel projects—I’m not sure if they’re on hold, underway, or completed). What’s the current situation? Is Lombok still a must-visit? And do you have any tips (hotels, places to visit, health, etc.)? - Still on Lombok, I did the Rinjani trek back then. I remember the hike wasn’t easy, but it wasn’t as tough as what I’ve read in quite a few recent travel journals... My partner and I are in decent shape, but that’s about it, and especially, my partner and our two daughters really don’t like the cold. What’s your experience with this trek? And do you have a trekking agency to recommend? (If we do it, I think we’d want to make sure we have good support, including quality gear, tents, jackets, etc.) - Flores and Komodo would be a completely new experience for all of us. Any tips and recommendations are welcome (sightseeing, accommodations, transport, etc.)! In particular, we’d like to explore the Komodo archipelago with a trusted agency that will take the time to show us the archipelago’s treasures in good conditions (safety and "decent" comfort). Do you know of any such agencies? - Are there other nearby islands you’d recommend? Any advice on places to visit and where to stay?

We’ll have three weeks on the ground... and we like to mix sightseeing with downtime where we just enjoy the moment. So we’re not looking for an overly packed itinerary, but still something rich (no point traveling so far just to lie on a sunbed all day ;-))

Hi everyone, When we travel abroad, we usually rent a car to be independent with our itinerary and free with our timing. But we get the feeling that it’s not so simple in Indonesia. Is it feasible, for example, to drive from Bali to Komodo National Park by car? What are the roads like? Can you rent and return cars on these smaller islands? Thanks for your replies.

I’d love to hear about your experiences—what should I see? How long should I stay at each stop? I travel at a relaxed pace and won’t be renting a scooter. I enjoy walking, exploring, and taking it easy—not just lounging on beaches. For some trips, I can hire a driver and car if public transport is complicated. Thanks for your tips! 🙂

For those familiar with SOUTHEAST ASIA, I'm planning to leave in mid-June (with the trip ending at the latest in November), and I don’t have a precise idea of exact places or itineraries yet. The thing is, this period is usually the rainy season...

Any advice? I was thinking of Malaysia or Indonesia, like Sulawesi, for example (all countries and islands in Southeast Asia interest me except Bali).

Any recommendations? I’m doing my research online, but if anyone here has the time and knowledge, I’d love to hear from you.

I arrive in Jakarta on July 24th and want to head to Flores Island the next day. Do you know which airlines offer direct flights to Labuan Bajo (or elsewhere)? Is it possible to book tickets directly on Indonesian airline websites (I get the feeling that when connecting from France, access is blocked...)

Also, are there direct flights from Maumere or Ende back to Jakarta for the return trip, or do I have to go back through Labuan Bajo?

I’ve been wrestling with this question for weeks now: Flores or Sulawesi?

I’m leaving in July for 24 days, followed by 2 weeks around Makassar/Wakatobi for work. For the first part, I’m traveling with my family (my partner + 3 kids aged 6 to 14).

I’ve had a long-time dream of Komodo, but I’m worried it’s become super touristy... though the crossing to Maumere still sounds amazing. I’m also not thrilled about all the internal flights.

On the other hand, since I’ll be in Sulawesi anyway, I’m thinking a crossing from Gorontalo to Luwuk via the Togians (maybe even a few days in Banggai) + a detour to Toraja (which I visited 10 years ago) could be an incredible trip too.

For my family, this is their first trip to Indonesia, so I’d love it to feel *mythic* ;).

Any advice is welcome—I’m really struggling to decide! I know it’s a choice between two great options...

Voilà c'est décidé on a prévu de partir pour l’Indonésie en août prochain, pour 16 js et 15 nuits.

Je regarde les prix d'avion ou je fais des simulations AR entre Marseille Denpasar , ou Marseille Jakarta et retour par Denpasar Marseille . J'arrive à un prix de 750 € par personne que ce soir AR ou multi destination. Qui me parait correcte vu la saison , bon on peut tjs avoir moins cher ..... je cherche !

Après je suis un peu décontenancé mais je m'en doutait en parcourant le post intitulé : circuit pour visiter Bali loin du tourisme de masse , qui déconseille vivement l'été à Bali, mais moi je n'ai pas le choix ! ou Alaia 1994 cite juillet août never again !!!

On est plutôt vacance authenticité, proche de la nature , petit restau qui ne paye pas de mine , petit hotel sympa et surtout propre !

Alors est ce vraiment si compliqué en août avec le tourisme de masse ?

Ma question a -t- on a le temps de faire Java puis Bali , en 15 js ?

ou une autre ile qui a moins le flot touristique ?

Bonjour à tous. Étant en préparation pour mon prochain séjour d'un mois en janvier prochain, 3 destinations m'attirent, mais j'hésite dans mon choix. Pour ceux qui ont fait les 3 destinations, quel sont les avantages et différences? Ce que je recherche c'est 1-le cout sur place (pension oblige),2- la sécurité 3- la gentillesse des gens et la richesse culturelle. Je voyage sac à dos, en louant scooter ou transport en commun, et ne recherche pas le party mais bien la tranquilité et le quotidien des gens, de belles plages et paysages grandioses. Voici ou j'en suis dans mes réflections: Indonésie et Phillipines= trop grand pour un mois (donc encore plus indécis sur l'itinéraire) Le Sri Lanka me rebute pour une seule raison , l'hygiène (mes craintes sont-elles fondées?). Par contre il semble facile de s'y déplacer et d'en faire le tour en un mois. Bref, après avoir consulter différents forum et m'etre procurer les guides de chaque destination mentionnée, le ressenti de personne y ayant séjourné ou qui y vivent m'éclairerais peut-etre. Merci de partager vos expériences.

Nous partons 20 jours destination sulawesi nord, nous restons au Nord pour ne prendre le temps, le sud est bien sur a faire, mais ca sera pour un autre séjour.

Arrivé Manado, on compte y passer une nuit puis partir sur bunaken pour 5 jours environ au sea bunaken resort.

Je souhaitais aller sur bangka mais j'ai peu d'information sur les transferts de manado , et les tarifs d'hébergement semble très chers.

Suivi de 2 jours tongkoko en passant a tohomon et de 5 jours a Tumbak

Qu'en pensez vous ? Qu'elle alternative sympa a bangka pour 5 jours environs ?

Notre objectif est repos, rencontre avec la population et Snorkeling +++

nous partons, ma fille ado et moi-même, à Sulawesi en juillet-août pour 5 semaines. nous ne connaissons pas du tout l'Indonésie, ce sera une première. quand nous voyageons, nous n'avons pas l'habitude de réserver nos hébergements à l'avance parce que nous aimons improviser au gré de nos envies et ce qui se présente à nous sur le moment... pour Sulawesi néanmoins d'après ce que je lis j'ai un peu peur que nous puissions être coincées ça et là, surtout dans les endroits plus touristiques, si nous laissons tout ouvert... avis donc aux connaisseurs... qu'en pensez-vous? avons nous intérêt à prévoir un peu à l'avance? mille mercis de votre retour

Hi there, My partner and I are planning to travel during the last week of August and the first two weeks of September for a trip to Bali and Lombok. In terms of time allocation, do you think we should spend more time in Bali or Lombok?

I’ve already been to Bali back in 2012 and have great memories of it, but it seems like mass tourism has only increased since then… so we’d rather avoid the south of the island.

We’re pretty skeptical about visiting Ubud, but it still feels like a must-see, especially for my partner who’s never been. What do you think? Is there an alternative to Ubud where he could still catch at least one Balinese dance performance?

Nous partirons à Lombok en juillet/août 2020 avec 2 enfants de 2 ans et demi et 4 ans et demi pour environ 1 mois.

Je vous soumets l'itinéraire pour avoir des avis éclairés, visites et conseils pour l'hébergement : - 4 jours autour de Kuta (Kuta ou Selong Belanak ou quelque part dans la partie Sekotong ?). Selon le lieu d'hébergement, cette étape sera en première (si vers Kuta), ou en avant-dernière (si Sekotong). - 4 jours dans la péninsule d'Ekas - 3 jours vers Tetebatu - 5 jours vers Senaru - 3 jours vers Sengigi (au nord de Sengigi probablement) - 6 jours sur Gili Asahan pour finir et se reposer.

Cela fait 25 jours, on a encore quelques jours de rab à caser si besoin.

On veut être plutôt tranquilles et profiter de la nature et de l'authenticité (d'où pas les gili du nord-ouest), mais avec suffisamment de choses à faire pas trop loin de chaque lieu d'hébergement (pour éviter trop de transport avec les enfants).

Merci pour toute information ou conseil pouvant m'éclairer, j'ai un guide touristique mais évidemment ces endroits ne sont quasiment pas abordés (c'est bon signe !)

Hi there, We're planning our trip to Indonesia and want to take the boat to get from Bali (Padangbai) to Lombok (Senggigi). We found a ticket via the 12go.asia website with EKAJAYA Fast Company. From what I understand, the baggage weight limit is 20 kg per person for the boat. However, we’ll have 2 checked suitcases (from our flight) that should weigh around 30 kg since that’s the max allowed due to our diving gear, etc. Do they actually weigh the luggage? What happens if our bags exceed the weight limit? Extra charge? Have any of you dealt with this situation before?

Hi there, I’m heading to Indonesia for a month this summer and will spend a few days on the island of Lombok.

I initially planned to spend 3 nights in Senaru to explore the surrounding area (village, waterfalls, etc.—but no volcano trek) for 2 days and then take a day trip by scooter to discover Sembalun (mainly the Bukit Selong viewpoint) before returning to sleep in Senaru. After that, I’d head to Kuta Lombok.

But I’m considering two other options: 1) Stop at the Bukit Selong viewpoint with the taxi that’ll take us from Senaru to Kuta (though I’m not sure if it’s a big detour). 2) Stay only 2 nights in Senaru, then spend one night in Sembalun before heading to Kuta.

What do you think? Should I stick with my original plan (visiting Sembalun as a day trip by scooter from Senaru) or go for one of the other two options?

Hi everyone! I’m planning a little trip to Indonesia for my 40th birthday. My tickets are already booked, and I arrive in Bali on the evening of March 26. I saw that Nyepi is on the 29th, so I decided to leave Bali and come back later.

I’ve made arrangements to go to Nusa Penida, but they observe Nyepi there too! So I’m thinking of leaving Nusa Penida on the evening of March 28 and would like to visit southern Lombok (especially Gili Gede and Ekas). My issue is that I can only find fast boats to Bangsal (the north of the island). Do you know if there are any transport options to southern Lombok (like Kuta Lombok)? In this southern region, do you have any great tips? I’m looking for places to go, but also drivers to take us around and hotels.

Hi there, we’re planning to spend a month in Lombok in July 2026 and would love to hear your thoughts on Gili Gede.

We really enjoy snorkeling, preferably from the beach (so we don’t have to rely on renting a boat). On the side, we also love short hikes of a few hours—like to waterfalls or through rice fields (max 5–6 hours round trip). We’d like to stay in small family-run hotels away from the crowds (but with a pool, since our kids love spending their evenings there).

Do you think Gili Gede checks at least 2 of these 3 boxes (snorkeling + small family-run hotels away from the crowds)? Would you recommend a better spot in Lombok that ticks all 3 boxes?
