Bonjour à tous, Cette année (début septembre) nous partons faire la cote ouest des USA avec mes parents et mon copain. Ils ne sont jamais allés là-bas. Moi j’y suis allée il y a trois ans et mon parcours était le suivant : LA (3 nuits et une journée à Universal studio) – SF (3 nuits), Lake Tahoe (une nuit), Las vegas (1 nuit), Zion / Bryce Canyon et grand Canyon (je ne sais plus le nombre de nuit) et retour avec 3 nuits à LV et départ de LV. Pour un total de 19 jours sur place. J’étais malheureusement partie au moment des grèves et du coup pas mal de grands parcs fermés (Alcatraz, vallée de la mort, Yosemite…), on avait donc fait les parcs en fonction de ce qui était ouvert. Globalement voici ce que j’ai pensé / aimé / pas aimé : - LA : très déçue de Hollywood boulevard, j’ai trouvé ça sale et pas très joli. Universal studio je ne le referai pas et surtout pas avec mes parents lol. Par contre j’ai adoré Long Beach, Malibu etc… Zion park je ne le referai pas non plus. En revanche j’ai adoré tout le reste ! Je voudrais donc faire un voyage qui complète ce que je n’ai pas fait et qui fait découvrir des jolies choses à mes parents et mon chéri. Concernant les gouts de chacun : mon père n’est pas fan de grande ville (lui c'est les parcs qui lui plaisent) mais il n’aura pas trop le choix lol … ma mère rêve de Vegas. Je pense qu’on peut trouver un bon compromis entre les deux pour plaire à chacun ! Voici ce que je pensais faire et j’ai bien sur pas mal de questions et pas mal de « trous » : J1 : arrivée LA – aucune idée de l’heure, mais de mémoire lors de mon dernier voyage c’était déjà tard donc je pense que le 1er jour on ne fera pas grand-chose avec le décalage horaire etc.. (1ere nuit sur place) J2 : passage par Hollywood boulevard, montée à l’observatoire, passage par Beverly hills. (2ème nuit sur place) J3 : long beach , Venice beach, Malibu..Santa monica (3ème nuit sur place) J4 : départ pour SF (journée sur la route, en tout cas c’est ce qui s’était passé quand je suis partie et on avait dormi en route) J5 : arrivée SF le matin, aprem - balade dans la ville (cable car, golden bridge (1ere nuit sur place) J6 : visite d’alcatraz (un impératif pour nous 4) – balade vers le port, etc.. (2ème nuit sur place) J7 – donc là ça se corse 3ème nuit sur place ? … soit on retourne vers le Lake Tahoe, mais cela fait un détour, soit départ vers Yosemite ? Je vois sur internet qu’il faut environ 3h pour rejoindre Yosemite donc on serait là-bas en fin de matinée. Plusieurs questions : - combien de temps pour visiter le parc sachant que je pense qu’on aimerait bien faire une ou deux randonnées ? … - peut-on dormir dans le parc et si oui quel est le meilleur endroit ? J8 : visite du parc – nuit dans le parc ou alentours J9 : départ pour LV avec passage par vallée de la mort (est-ce qu’un passage suffit ou faut-il vraiment s’y arrêter ?) – arrivée le soir à LV (nuit à LV) Lors de mon ancien voyage nous avions fait une nuit à LV pour faire un stop (après 9h de route depuis Lake Tahoe) et pour repartir visiter les parcs le lendemain, je ne sais pas quel est le meilleur choix ? .. J 10 / 11 / 12 / 13 / 14 / 15 / 16 / 17 … : à définir Fin du voyage avec 3 nuits à Las Vegas : on prévoit un spectacle un soir, shopping à l’outlet, piscine, casino etc.

Bon comme vous le voyez y a pas mal de trous dans mon plan … Concernant les parcs je suis un peu perdue, je pense que Bryce et Grand Canyon sont un incontournable mais que peut-on rajouter d’autres (qui changerait un peu ???) Nous avons normalement 21-22 jours sur place ! et je n’arrive qu’à combler plusieurs jours du parcours … aidez moi 🙁 Autre question : comment « bien manger » pas trop cher ? en effet mon copain et moi « on s’en fout » de manger Mcdo tous les jours car il est vrai que c’est vite très cher là bas mais pour mes parents c’est une autre affaire … 🤪 Concernant la location de la voiture, à l’époque nous étions passés par Alamo, en revanche y a-t-il des choses auxquelles il faut faire attention (en cas d’accident etc…) ? de plus, on m’a dit que le permis de conduire international n’était pas nécessaire, des avis ? etant donné qu’il est gratuit je pense qu’on va le faire pour 3 d’entres nous. Let me introduce myself. I’m 45 and traveling with my husband and my daughter, who’ll be 17 soon. We’re used to road-trip-style vacations, in the US or elsewhere. This will be our 5th trip to the US. We’ve already visited several states: New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Washington DC, Florida, Wyoming, South Dakota, California, Utah, Nevada, and Arizona. I’d like to plan another trip starting from Denver to Colorado and New Mexico, which we haven’t explored yet, with a stop in a part of Arizona we haven’t visited before. We’ll be alternating between house swaps, motels, and campgrounds. I’ve booked all the accommodations (except the campground at Bryce since sunset bookings open only 14 days in advance) and the first activities, as well as the most touristy ones.

I’m currently putting together my day-by-day roadbook and having some trouble planning certain days, like in LA or Las Vegas. Choosing hikes isn’t easy either—it’s tough to decide!

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast. I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October. My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.

Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips. I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.

So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.

This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.

Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks... For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400, which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.). Total madness.

The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.

Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!

Let me introduce us quickly—I’m Matteo (21, originally from Paris, but I’ve been living near the Pyrenees and the Alps for the past 3 years), and my girlfriend Justine (21, grew up in the Alps). We’re starting to get really fed up with being cooped up and sitting in chairs (yep, we’re studying physics and geography at the École Normale Supérieure in Lyon). So, we’re taking a gap year to make a slightly crazy project happen: hitting the road, meeting people, and most importantly—climbing, skiing, and exploring the mountains!

We’ve always been into the mountains: •🧗‍♂️ 6c-7a/b sport climbing, 6b trad •❄️ Skiing and ice climbing (grade 4/5) •🏔️ Alpine climbing in the Alps (Chamonix, Écrins…) and the Pyrenees—I’m training to become a High Mountain Guide

Our project in a nutshell: •Buying a van (or 4x4) converted in British Columbia around September/October 2025. Ideally, we’d go straight to the US to buy the vehicle there (but reselling might be easier if we buy in Canada). •Heading down to the US to climb at legendary spots like Yosemite, Tuolumne (if it’s too hot), Indian Creek, Moab, and Joshua Tree. •Heading back up to the Canadian Rockies around December for skiing, ice climbing, and winter alpine climbing (might be easier to buy skis there). •Selling the vehicle in Canada at the end of the trip (we need to be back in France by early March 2026 because Justine is preparing for the AMM). I’ve already been to the Rockies, but I want to go back in winter for ice climbing. It’ll probably be too cold to sleep in the van, so we’re hoping to find a small cabin, lodge, or chalet (ideally alone or shared to cut costs). Otherwise, we could work for a month or two at a hostel or something to get free accommodation and earn money to rent a place another month just for climbing. •Visa-wise: we’re hoping to get our Working Holiday Visa (WHV) (still waiting for a response) so we can work there during the trip. For the US, we’ll stay as tourists (no work visa—too complicated and expensive). Any feedback on the WHV or differences from a regular work visa would be great. •With our savings (we’re working in mountain huts this summer), we should be able to buy the van. For daily expenses, I’m hoping to tutor online (math and physics). We live pretty simply and resourcefully: we plan to sleep mostly in the van, cook for ourselves, wash in rivers, and make the most of free nature spots. We’re super motivated, pretty well-rounded when it comes to mountain sports, and we’re not afraid to live simply for a year (we’ve got other projects too: biking to Greece with our climbing gear, a trip to Patagonia for alpine climbing).

Questions and advice: Of course, a road trip like this raises a lot of practical questions. This is our first time embarking on an adventure of this scale, so we’d love to hear your experiences and tips. If any of you have done a long van trip in North America or a WHV in Canada, your insights would be incredibly helpful! Here are some of the questions we’ve got: How do we buy (and later sell) a converted van in British Columbia? We’ll probably land in Vancouver. Is it better to look for a vehicle on online classifieds, Facebook groups, or used car dealerships? Are there any pitfalls to avoid when buying? And for selling it a year later, any tips to make it go smoothly (best time to sell, paperwork, etc.)? What budget should we plan for van life in North America and Canada? If you’ve got any info or feedback on the cost of living in a van in Canada/the US, we’d love to hear it. We’re thinking about expenses like gas (a big one, I imagine!), van maintenance, car insurance, possible tolls, campgrounds or paid spots, etc. We’d like to get an idea of a daily or monthly budget so we’re not too tight. In France, we never stay at campgrounds—we prefer being alone or going where we want. Is that possible in the US and Canada? Any tips for saving money (free camping spots, useful apps…) would be great! Visas, borders, and paperwork: We’re hoping to get a WHV for Canada, but in the US, we’ll be on a tourist visa (90 days max with ESTA, I think). Has anyone combined a WHV in Canada with a trip to the US on the same trip? Anything we should know about crossing the border in a van (insurance, customs, how long we’re allowed in the US, etc.)? We want to avoid any administrative hassles, so any advice on this would be super helpful. Route and seasonality for climbing and skiing: We’re thinking of starting climbing in the US around fall 2025 (probably September/October). Is that the right season for Yosemite, Indian Creek, and Moab? Any must-see spots along the way? For winter, we’re aiming for December to March in the Canadian Rockies (Banff, Jasper, Golden…) for skiing and ice climbing. Any tips on ice climbs or major backcountry skiing spots? We’ve got all our climbing, skiing, and alpine gear—should we bring it all or buy some stuff there? Is the “Wilderness Season Pass” for winter in the Rockies worth it? We came across this pass that offers 7 months of unlimited nights in HI mountain hostels in the Rockies. Has anyone here tried it? Are the dorms usually crowded? Working on the road: To fund the trip, we’re planning to work a bit along the way. Any tips for finding work in Canada while traveling (peak seasons at ski resorts, WWOOFing, odd jobs…)? That’s it for our (many) questions 😅! After tweaking this route every which way and trying to balance must-see spots with more relaxed stops (like the Oregon coast), I’ve landed on this itinerary—I’d love your thoughts!

We’re on the Roswell–Tucumcari leg. We’ll go through Fort Sumner. After visiting, there are two ways to reach Tucumcari:

Take US 84 to Santa Rosa, see its Blue Hole, then the almost ghost towns on the historic Route 66 (Cuervo, Newkirk, and Montoya). We won’t visit the Route 66 auto museum (we’ll do the one in Tucumcari). The other option is to take 252 and then 209.

The next day, we plan to head to our next stop in Las Vegas (the one in NM) by going up the Mesalands Scenic Byway (104).

Is the detour to Santa Rosa worth it? Are the historic Route 66 sections drivable?

Hello. I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.

There are several attractions along the way: - Mormon Rocks - Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite - Joshua Tree National Park - Mojave Desert - Mojave National Preserve - Anza-Borrego Desert State Park - Silverwood Lake

My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?

I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.

Hi there, Just back from 25 days in May 2025 in the American West—here are some practical tips that might help you plan your trip.

Flight: 2 tickets for 1270 € with British Airways (Lyon-LA, SF-Lyon) SIM card: 12GB from Sim USA for 39 €. Useful for looking up accommodation every late afternoon. 12GB was enough for us. Car rental: Booked with BSP Autos. 21 days = 538 € for a Jeep Compass SUV picked up at LA airport and dropped off at SF airport. An SUV isn’t essential at all, but since we had one, we did take some easy dirt roads. Driving is straightforward, highways are toll-free. Gas: Averaged $3.80/gallon = 1 €/liter. We drove 6700 km and spent $500 on gas. Big price differences between states, and even between stations in the same state. We checked Google Maps/fuel for the best deals. Water: Not recommended to drink tap water. We refilled two 3L bottles regularly at visitor centers in the parks and froze two 1L bottles overnight to keep water cool during the day. Money: Bring cash for tips and gas—sometimes cheaper when paying in cash. Accommodation: Averaged $100/night. Only the first night in LA was booked in advance. For the rest of the trip, we found places to stay (mostly motels outside the parks) near where we were each late afternoon by checking availability on Booking, among others. No issues finding places in May—the advantage was the freedom to improvise. For example, we’d planned to do the loop counterclockwise: LA, Joshua Tree, Grand Canyon. But seeing the forecast (3 days of snow and freezing temps at GC), we headed straight from JT to Las Vegas, did the loop clockwise, and by the time we got back to GC, the weather was perfect. Weather: Aside from the first 3 mixed days, we had perfect weather—20-30°C, except Death Valley (37°C) and SF (15°C). Food: Depends on your appetite. For us, snacks during the day, a bigger meal in the evening, plus miscellaneous extras—our budget was $40/day. Miscellaneous: The "America the Beautiful" pass is a must—80 $. Website: For us, the best site was roadtrippin’. Our itinerary: LA, Joshua Tree, Las Vegas, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands, Arches, Colorado National Monument, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Mesa Verde, Natural Bridges, Gooseneck Point, Canyon de Chelly, Painted Desert Park, Petrified Forest Park, Sedona, Grand Canyon, Route 66, LV, Red Rock Canyon Park, Death Valley, Sequoia Park, Yosemite Park, Big Sur-Monterey, San Francisco. 25 days—we didn’t lounge around, but we didn’t rush either. We took time in each park to drive the scenic routes, visit viewpoints, and do at least one hike (max 2 hours) per park.

Désolé de lancer ce sujet déjà débattu mais je recherche des personnes qui ont loué très récemment une voiture à l'aéroport de Los Angeles chez Alamo ou chez Avis pour savoir si on leur a demandé le permis international à la prise du véhicule. Sur les deux sites de ces loueurs rien n'est vraiment clair par rapport au fait d'avoir ou non à présenter un permis international.

Nous partons au titre de notre voyage de noces 3 semaines aux Etats-Unis, côte Ouest, boucle San Francisco, Las Vegas, Los Angeles.

Vous trouverez ci-dessous le parcours de base et nous souhaiterions l'affiner au + vite car notre vol décolle le 7 Juillet 2012! A la requête de tous vos conseils :)

- Jour/Nuit 1 : Départ de Paris et arrivée à San Francisco en fin d'après-midi (Visite SF). - Jour/Nuit 2 : San Francisco (Visite SF). - Jour/Nuit 3 : San Francsico (Visite SF et location de véhicule le soir afin de ne pas perdre de temps le lendemain matin - Hôtel réservé : Hôtel Herbert : qu'en pensez-vous ?). - Jours/nuits 4, 5, 6 et 7 ? : Nous décollons de San Francisco tôt dans la matinée et direction Yosemite Park. C'est dans ce premier temps que je fais appel à vous car je souhaiterais pendant ces 4 jours faire Yosemite Park, Sequoia Park (& éventuellement Kings Canyon) puis Death Valley). Je ne sais pas vraiment comment optimiser mon temps de route en réservant des hôtels aux points stratégique me permettant d'aller d'un parc à un autre sans perdre trop de temps...) => Please help e ntermes d'hôtels et d'organisation de ces 4 jours!! - Jours/nuits 8 à 15 : Las Vegas (hôtel Excalibur ?), Zion & Brice Canyon (hôtel ?), Antelope Canyon & Lake Powell (hôtel?), Monument Valley (hôtel ?), Grand Canyon (hôtel) - Jours/nuits 16 à 20 : Arrivée à Los Angeles (après une longue route from Grand Canyon) donc probablement dans las soirée. Nous avons réservé un hôtel Best Western PLUS Gateway Hotel (Santa Monica) => Visites Hollywood Blvd, Sunset Blvd, Berevely Hills, studios Universal, Malibu, etc.. => éventuellement partir de LA le 19 et faire une nuit à Carmel (escale pour San Francico)? - Jour 21 /nuit 21 : départ pour San Francisco car vol le lendemain fin de journée pour Paris :(

=> Voili voilou où nous en sommes, à moins de 2 mois du départ.... Mon stress porte essentiellement sur (vous l'aurez compris) l'organisation de la partie la plus "WAOUU" tous les parcs... je susi preneur de tous conseils, orga & hôtels! Merci beaucoup :)

Titulaire d'une Gold Mastercard, et ne louant pas un 4X4 , j'avais décidé de ne prendre aucune assurance supplémentaire; En revanche, après avoir passé un coup de fil à l'assureur, celui ci me confirme bien qu' avec cette carte je n'ai pas besoin de prendre d'assurances supplémentaires, qu'en revanche, il est indispensable de prendre une "assurance aux personnes transportées" surtout en cas de location aux US (et aussi Australie je crois)!

Les agences de location proposent-elles cette assurance optionnelle ? ou faut-il souscrire cette assurance spécifique avant le départ ? (Décidément, les assurances et moi, ça fait vraiment 2🤪😇) Merci infinimment de m'apporter des précisions à ce sujet😉

Pour aller de Denver aux Gds tetons, j'ai envie de passer par le Great Divide Basin au nord est de Rocksprings. Il y a une piste qui quitte la I80 à michemin entre Rawlins et Rocksprings et qui monte vers le nord jusqu'à South pass et Atlantic City, 2 villes fantômes. Est-ce que qqn est allé dans ces coins-là? Ca vaut le coup de se taper de la piste sur 100 km? Avez-vous vu les chevaux sauvages? Merci Marie

Voyage été prochain (mi-juillet mi-août). Nous arrivons à Vancouver à 14h. Récupération de la voiture et direction Seattle. Alors voilà mes questions : Le passage à la frontière (Blaine) est-il long ? J'ai bien peur que la chance joue un rôle ? Le nombre de véhicules et la complaisance des douaniers par ex ? Faut-il vraiment envisager une longue attente ? Peut-il être envisageable de rejoindre Bellingham (ou environs) à une heure pas trop tardive (on aura déjà pas mal de décalage à gérer) ? Est-il préférable de passer 1 nuit à Vancouver (que nous prendrons le temps de visiter à notre retour) et de filer direct à Seattle le lendemain matin ?

Je parts du 7 au 21 Octobre aux US pour faire un circuit de 15 jours. Nous avons réservé l'ensemble des hôtels, mais il m'en reste quelqu'uns à réserver. Je me demandais s'il valait mieux que j'attende la dernière minute, mais je me demande si je trouverai de la place à cette époque. Les endroits qu'ils me restent à réserver sont : Le grand Canyon (1 nuit)(à Tusayan je pense) Bryce canyon (1 nuit) Los angeles (1 nuit) dans le quartier de Universal studios Monterey (1 nuit) Carmel (1 Nuit)

Pensez-vous qu'il faille que je réserve avant ou puis-je me permettre d'attendre le matin même ? Pourriez-vous me donner votre retour d'expériences. Si vous avez des adresses à me communiquer et me dire le prix que vous avez payé.

(Nous sommes 4 - 2 couples, et nous essayons de partager les chambres pour payer moins cher)

Voila mon trip commence dans plus que 10 jours ...

Et j'ai de plus en plus envie de rajouté une chose que je n'ai encore pas fait mais dans mon programme cela me fait faire un détour assez grand et sachant que les nuitée sont toutes réservées ....

Ce détour serait en fait le suivant :

Au lieu de faire Casper - Cody (direct) (au Jour2 apres Denver)

Je souhaiterai faire dans la meme journée : Casper (départ Ultra tot de l'hotel) - Mont Rushmore (240 miles apparament et 2h de visite ?) - route vers cody (390 miles apparament) pour une arrivée vers 20hEst ce raisonnable ? Quel type de route pour faire ce trajet, possibilité d alller un peu "vite" ? - Est ce faisable ?

Merci de vos conseils et avis, cela m'aiderait grandement dans mon choix de faire cette journée hard en routes ... Ps : c'est ma femme qui meurt d envie de voir le Mont Rushmore ...
