Mandatory Insurance Imposed by Kenya for ETA Applications
by Puma2A · 2026-10-16 · 3 replies
Hello,

To read:

📋 Yes, travel insurance is now mandatory in the ETA application. Since October 6, 2026, the official Kenyan ETA portal directly includes a step to subscribe to mandatory government travel insurance for travelers required to obtain an ETA, even if you already have your own medical and repatriation insurance. This insurance adds an official extra cost of $44 plus payment fees of $8, totaling $52 on top of the ETA. The ETA application cannot be completed without paying for this insurance on the portal.

In the end, Kenya followed the Tanzanian "model".....!!

One more piece of good news.... Regards.

Trekking in Madagascar: which regions and should we hire a guide?
by Pigafetta47 · 2026-10-07 · 3 replies
Hi everyone.

My partner, our daughter, and I are planning a walking trip to Madagascar in July-August 2027. We’d love any tips or info you can share about this plan. Which regions should we prioritize? Is a local guide better than a well-established agency? Where’s the best place to buy our flight tickets from Réunion? Thanks for your input!
Negative Portrait of Mauritius in Lonely Planet
by Envallis · 2026-10-05 · 7 replies
Hey everyone,

After a crazy intense work year, we’re heading off soon to relax for a week in Mauritius.

It’s great to unwind, but it’d be a shame to just lie around on a sun lounger the whole time.

So I grabbed my favorite (little) travel guide, the Lonely Planet, a few days ago, and the picture it paints isn’t exactly inspiring. Word for word: - Pamplemousses Garden: “more or less well-maintained, it’s lost its former glory” - Île aux Cerfs: tourists “flock there in crowds” - Blue Bay Marine Park: “some now call it a morning cemetery” (given the state of the coral garden) - Le Morne Peninsula: “big hotel chains have taken over the beaches”

Not sure what to make of all this :/
Tanzania: Should we use a local agency and/or guide to organize the trip?
by DjobiSan · 2026-09-28 · 30 replies
Hello fellow travelers,

I’m starting to plan a trip to Tanzania + Zanzibar in August 2027 for 2 to 3 weeks with my partner.

I’ve never been there before and I’d love some advice, especially for Tanzania where we’re planning to do several safaris in the North.

Specifically:

Do you recommend using a travel agency to organize the trip, or are guidebooks and internet recommendations enough? If you’ve used a local agency (rather than one in France), which one? Would you recommend hiring a guide for the entire stay in Tanzania, or is it better to travel independently except in the parks where I’ve read that guides are mandatory? If you’ve used a local agency (rather than one in France), which one and at what price? Have you had any bad surprises (hidden fees, inexperienced guide, poor vehicle condition)?

Looking forward to reading your tips! 🙂 Thanks in advance
Meeting locals in Antsirabe
by FoxAdriano · 2026-09-22 · 1 reply
Hi there, I’ll start my trip in Tulear, and it’s going to be a demanding journey since I’ll be crossing some pretty isolated regions. After that, I’d like to relax and enjoy a quieter pace for 20 days in Antsirabe. But I’m worried that after Tulear, I might struggle to readjust—I’ll be used to the open-mindedness and cheerfulness of the Vezo people. Could you tell me if people in Antsirabe are more reserved and if it’s hard to make friends quickly? Thanks
Zanzibar: The Tax Champion
by Waly2014 · 2026-09-14 · 18 replies
Thirty years ago, I traveled to Zanzibar (Tanzania) with my children. Since I’ve since started a new family, I took the opportunity of a trip to Kenya to bring my new family along: my wife, who’s Kenyan, and my 10-year-old daughter. Zanzibar has really changed in 30 years. It’s become the island of taxes. It all starts upon arrival: I think it’s the only country in the world, besides the visa, where Zanzibar insurance (and no other) is mandatory—it costs 40 €. If you didn’t purchase it before arriving, good luck getting it: the IT systems are unreliable. With a bit of luck, it’ll take at least an hour to process! And of course, this insurance is useless—if you get sick, it’s recommended to use your home country’s insurance because if you use Zanzibar’s, your national insurance won’t cover you anymore. I wanted to show my daughter the red colobus monkey, which is endemic to Zanzibar. I paid for a tour that was supposed to be all-inclusive. First, we visited a spice farm, where a farm guide took charge of us—meaning commissions were involved, of course! The tour was very good and informative, though. When we arrived at Jenzhi Park (the colobus park), the guide told us he "forgot" there was an entrance fee (50$). Aware of the system, I decided to book an Ocean Blue tour through the Zanzibar Tourism Office. After two hours of driving, we stopped at a beach—and were left there. No boat was ready to take us. Since my wife speaks Swahili (the language in Zanzibar), after an hour, a captain with his own boat agreed to take us along with his family. Another attempt. The main attraction in Zanzibar (besides the city) is Changuu, the Prison Island. You have to take a motorboat and pay the captain, which is normal. But in Zanzibar, to even get on a boat, you first have to pay a tax! Once we arrived at the island, it started all over again! Thirty years ago, access was free, and the entire island (about 1 km²) was open. Today, there’s a small office, and you have to pay a hefty fee to enter. But enter where? A paved path leads to about 15% of the island—the rest is off-limits. In total, I paid 100 € for my wife, daughter, and myself just to visit a tiny portion of the island! Avoid this! For the rest of our stay, we stayed at a 5-star hotel with golf, horseback riding, tennis courts, evening concerts, etc.—undeniably high-level comfort. One last thing: if you want to rent a car, it’s affordable and useful for exploring the island’s diverse landscapes, but there are speed cameras at every corner on the main roads. The fine is supposedly 100 $, and it’s hard not to get one! I told you: Zanzibar, the land of taxes. I used to think my country, Belgium, was the tax champion—I’ve found something even better!
Strong "El Niño" phenomena in Kenya and Tanzania
by Puma2A · 2026-09-03 · 15 replies
Hello,

A must-read for anyone planning to travel to Kenya or Tanzania in the coming months.

https://www.corsematin.com/article/francemonde/70999544524516/lonu-prevoit-un-el-nino-de-tres-forte-intensite-ces-cinq-prochains-mois

In Nov./Dec. 2022, I went on a safari in the region and we suffered from the extreme temperatures caused by the "El Niño" phenomenon in the Indian Ocean at that time. On top of the extreme heat, there can be torrential rains, flooding, etc., which have led to disasters with casualties.

Worth keeping in mind (just in case).

Bush taxi from Tamatave heading southeast to Fort Dauphin
by Arakane · 2026-08-13 · 2 replies
hi there, I took this route 25 years ago, and this time I’ll be leaving from Tamatave heading south to Fort Dauphin. How far can you realistically get by bush taxi these days? Any firsthand experience or tips are welcome (just to clarify: we’re traveling on foot with backpacks, not by motorbike!). Thanks! !

I’m arriving in Tana on 9/10/26 as a solo female traveler. Which hotel in Tana is good for the first night since I’ll get in at 10 PM? What’s worth seeing around Tana? I’m planning 2 nights in Tana, then 2 nights in Andasibe? After that, Lake Itasy. Any suggestions? Thanks
The Pearl of Africa - July-August 2026
by Ellobo · 2026-08-08 · 66 replies
Preamble: Africa was calling to me, so a year ago, with our usual travel companions, we decided to return to the continent we love so much. Where to go? Uganda quickly caught our attention—wildlife we’re used to seeing, plus gorillas and the shoebill we missed in Zambia. We got in touch with Paul, who’s been mentioned several times on the forum back in September, booked our flight tickets, secured the gorilla permits, and by early October, the most important things were done. We still had plenty of time to hold our "prep meetings" for the final itinerary.

Three days before departure, I sprained my ankle (my weak spot, as you’ll recall from our Colombia trip). I wasn’t in great spirits, but after a year of waiting, nothing was going to stop me. We’d see how it goes! Off we went for our new adventures
Biking in Madagascar: What loop route from Antananarivo?
by Endlessummer · 2026-04-06 · 18 replies
hey everyone,

I’m landing in Madagascar with a buddy before the end of April 2026. We’re planning to bike around for about twenty days or so. We don’t have a specific goal other than exploring the country and meeting the locals.

Ideally, we’d prefer a loop route starting from Antananarivo with a good chunk of it along the coast. On the bike side, we’re used to riding 6 to 8 hours a day, depending on the needs, encounters, and mood 😉 Any feedback or tips from trips around this length?

Thanks in advance, Jérôme
Tips for a safari in Tanzania from Zanzibar
by Albin1 · 2026-03-29 · 8 replies
Hi everyone,

We’re a family of four (two daughters aged 18 and 21) and we’re planning a three-week trip to Tanzania. Zanzibar would be our main base, but we’d also like to do a safari on the mainland. Could you share any tips on: - the ideal length for such a safari, the best place to go during this period (and easily accessible by flight from Zanzibar) - your recommendations for the most suitable type of stay for a family like ours - reliable local agencies with reasonable prices that could help us with this plan

Thanks in advance!

Combined trip to the two islands: Mauritius and Réunion
by Moongigi · 2026-03-23 · 12 replies
Hi everyone, we’re planning a trip to Réunion for 6 nights and Mauritius for 7 nights in March 2027. I’m starting to look into it now. We’re not hikers, so I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Should we book flights and small hotels separately, or go for a flight-and-stay package? We don’t want to blow our budget (around 2800 € per person). Thanks! Gigi

We’d love to end our stay on Sainte Marie Island. Is there a way to make the trip by land? By sea? Just to clarify, we’re not pressed for time. Thanks!
Planning a trip to Rwanda off the beaten path – logistical questions
by Packeuse · 2026-02-23 · 5 replies
hi there

I’ve been to Rwanda twice before, in November 1991 and December 1993, mostly for solidarity work. I’m looking into going back this November or December for three weeks, but I’m a bit hesitant when I see the tourist offerings—it’s so far from how I like to travel...

I travel solo using public transport and stay in places like guesthouses (GH), or accommodations run by cooperatives, associations, or religious groups. I love villages, markets, hikes, and local crafts. So far, my searches for these kinds of lodging options haven’t turned up much.

For now, I’m considering visiting (in no particular order):

Butare: Kibeho, Bisesero, Nyanza Ngenda Akagera, Kibungo, Lake Muazi Dian Fossey’s tomb (with the possibility of seeing gorillas) Kibuye??? Is the political situation stable there? Or Cyangugu?

So here are my first questions: -Is French still widely spoken? -Are there lists of the types of accommodations I mentioned above, or places to find that info? -Is what I’m planning doable using public transport? From the towns, are moto-taxis still available to get to villages, sites, and—most importantly—back? -Is it possible to go hiking solo? -Which are the best markets and what days are they held?

I know that’s a lot of questions already, and I really appreciate any relevant answers you can share. Looking forward to exchanging more!
Currency on Île aux Nattes
by Tchockie · 2026-02-16 · 17 replies
Hi everyone, I’m heading to Île aux Nattes in a few weeks and I’d like to know if euros are accepted in the island’s restaurants. At the hotel where I’ll be staying, they take card payments, but for activities, I can’t find any reliable info. Could anyone tell me the approximate cost in euros and/or ariary for a week (food outside the hotel) on the island for two people?

Also, has anyone ever exchanged money at the Paris Magenta exchange bureau? Thanks!
Where to stay quietly in Zanzibar for Christmas?
by Sawaddeekha · 2026-01-19 · 12 replies
Hi everyone,

We have the opportunity to spend about ten days somewhere for Christmas, and I’m really tempted by Zanzibar. I’ve been dreaming for a long time about the Spice Island, Stone Town, diving...

Which hotels could you recommend? Not a big "resort"—we’re more into "boutique hotels" or even an Airbnb house. Somewhere quiet (we’re not party animals).

I’m thinking of staying the first few nights in Stone Town and then moving to a beach, preferably one where we can swim regardless of the tides, without ending up in seaweed and mud at low tide.

I’m a bit lost with all the beaches because apparently, the north is very crowded, the south is very windy, and the east has some good and some not-so-good spots, with big tides or not... HELP! 🤪

I’d like to limit myself to a maximum of 2 different places to stay over the 10 days.

Thanks in advance! 😉
Precautions and Vaccines for Madagascar Starting in February
by Nyora972 · 2026-01-04 · 6 replies
Hello, We’re planning to spend 3 months in Madagascar starting in mid-February. Areas: Mahajanga, Tulear, Diego Suarez, and Sainte Marie—the order isn’t set yet. We’ll either drive for part of the trip or take flights. We’ve heard all sorts of things about required vaccines and medications (is anti-malarial mandatory?). What’s the exact situation for travelers? I’ll come back to you for other topics (like finding a reliable driver, among others). Thank you. Best wishes to you all, Nicole
