J'ai connu l'orage ferme dans le coeur, et le tremblement du corps inlassablement secoue d'aneantissements. J'ai connu la paix a laquelle on aspire et qui se refuse, lorsque les nuits sont sans repit. Et j'ai connu les solitudes serrees qui font perdre l'equilibre, celles-la meme qui marchent et prosperent abasourdies. Ivre de perte, et de perdition.

Alors on ne devient guere meilleur, mais la possibilite nous est donnee de ne point oublier, et de cueillir a coup sur ce meme etat dans un regard, dans un froncement de sourcils. Celui de l'autre.

Puis un jour. Un jour la chance est offerte, la, inesperee. Une chance qui est un accord : l'accord entre la sommes d'apretes du passe et l'eclat des tous les possibles du futur. Eau fraiche qui coule, goutte, apres goutte, apres goutte, sur un corps brule.

J'ai connu. Ce qui restera a tout jamais grave sur ma peau. Mais j'ai appris que l'alphabet ne me servait pas a lire et ecrire, sinon a composer de nouvelles paroles que je grave avec delectation, moi meme, sur ma peau, et qui se superposent a celles de la douleur.

Amitie. Amour. Passion. Comprehension. Erreur. Pardon. Courage. Et avant. Toujours avant ! Un voyage est la formidable occasion de raviver ces paroles avec les couleurs de leur verite. Ni plus ni moins.

Alors j'ai marche sur l'echelle de la Terre. Pour souhaiter un joyeux Noel. Un joyeux Noel au jeune israelien qui voyage pour enterrer l'obsedant souvenir du trepas de son ami, decede lors d'une riposte armee. Joyeux Noel a cette maman qui a donne vie a son enfant mort, et qui se perd dans l'uterus du monde afin de ne plus abhorrer son propre uterus, desormais sterile. Et joyeux Noel a cet employe peruvian d'un hostal, qui se couche seul dans sa chambre microscopique, alors que la fete bat son plein a Arequipa. Joyeux Noel au SDF parisien victime de ses propres vices, et qui cherche ce soir un peu de chaleur et un repas ameliore, dans un centre d'accueil de la rue Saint Lazare. Et joyeux Noel au petit pauvre du grand continent pauvre, qui vit ce jour de fete en revant d'une miette, une seule miette, de l'agressive plethore qui s'etale sur les tables du Nord du monde.

Juste un petit 😉 de Bangkok, petite halte dans mes 6 mois de voyage en continent asiatique. Si vous avez la chance de passer par le Laos, poussez la route jusqu'a la paisible et sublime region des 4000 iles. C'est la, a Don Det plus precisemment, que j'ai pris d'extraordinaires cours de massage (un mixe, thai, brima, tantrique, chiatsu). Le professeur, therapiste de profession, travaille surtout sur les energies et prend soin de montrer des positions qui ne heurtent pas celui qui masse (ce qui n'est pas toujours le cas pour les massages thailandais). Nous partons pour 3 semaines en Bolivie le 17 septembre.

J'ai bien envie de faire la fameuse descente en VTT vers les Yungas.

D'après ce que j'ai lu dans les guides, il y a des agences qui organisent ça.

Question n°1 : nous (ma copine & moi) sommes en forme mais sans plus (un peu de vélo pour se déplacer, un peu de rando pyrénéenne), alors je voudrais savoir si c'est vraiment sport ou dangereux car ça inquiète ma copine.

Question n°2 : une agence à conseiller ? a déconseiller ?

est-il vrai aussi qu'il faut avoir une réservation d'hotel à l'arrivée avant d'entrer dans dubai pour la douane?

sinon je suis aussi preneur de tous les bons tuyaux pour visiter originalement dubai...

Hi! Sri Lanka has announced it could run out of fuel in the coming weeks if the Strait of Hormuz remains blocked. The government has implemented a mandatory four-day workweek to save oil, and there are long lines at gas stations due to fears of an early shortage. In Vietnam, the government has warned all airlines that flights will need to be reduced due to a lack of kerosene. The country imports two-thirds of its jet fuel from China and Thailand, but both countries have now banned exports out of fear of domestic shortages. The state is asking airlines to plan ahead and park aircraft to drastically reduce operations, starting with domestic flights and then international ones. International carriers will also need to cut back on their rotations. This will begin in the coming days. 🙁

Since I had trouble finding up-to-date info, here’s an update on some key points for Jordan/Egypt ferries as of August 2025.

Right now, AB Maritime is the only company still operating ferries. Other companies sometimes mentioned (Jordan Sinaï Hotel and Tour, Sinaï Ferry, etc.) have stopped running (no response by phone or email, and confirmed on-site).

On the Jordanian side, the fast ferry doesn’t leave from the port of Aqaba but from Tala Bay (20 km further south). There’s supposedly a slow ferry that departs in the evening from Aqaba port (according to a taxi driver), but I couldn’t find any info about it.

Currently, there’s one ferry per day in each direction for Aqaba/Taba and another for Aqaba/Nuweiba. But the schedules aren’t great for backpackers—and they’re not the same every day.

On the Jordanian side at Tala Bay, you access the port by walking through a large resort, go through border control before boarding the ferry (+ luggage check). You have to pay the exit tax of 10 JOD (12 €) to "someone sitting on a bench in front"!!! It’s true—you need to ask who to pay, or customs won’t let you through without the magic coupon. Oddly, I arrived early and managed to take a different ferry than the one I’d booked online by insisting (it wasn’t open for online reservations). I bought the ticket on the AB Maritime website. Confirmation by email was brief. Then you have to find another person outside the port who has the passenger list and will give you the actual ticket. (What a joy this organization is!) Luckily, everyone’s really friendly with tourists.

On the Egyptian side, arrival in Taba isn’t in Taba itself but at Taba Heights (20 km further south), in a hotel zone. Immigration can be more or less quick depending on your place in the queue at the single office... (free Sinai visa or paid Egypt visa). And outside... nothing. Nothing: no exchange bureau, no ATM, no drink or SIM vendor... A nightmare. No bus station. One or two taxis at prohibitive prices. Personally, I walked about fifteen minutes to the Strand Hotel to find someone who could actually help me (ATM out of service in that big resort). From there, two bus companies currently operate: Webus in small vans but you have to book at least 2 days in advance (frequent, fast, reasonable prices) or GoBus with large buses (only one per day, even cheaper). They head south to Nuweiba, Sharm El Sheikh, etc. A taxi from Taba to Sharm was quoted at 120 USD at the port exit!

For me, the ferry and GoBus schedules didn’t align at all. If I’d known about Webus earlier, I could’ve saved 6 hours of waiting...

On another note, a Taiwanese traveler I met also mentioned that the Hurghada-Sharm El Sheikh ferry is no longer running.

Basically, these border crossings and ferries are more suited to organized tours than backpackers, but it’s still doable.

So, this theme isn’t exactly a "travel invitation," but coming up with a new one is quite a puzzle 😅. During February’s “white” theme discussion, we had pages of cats, so you should be inspired 😸. I won’t be restrictive—wild felines, domestic cats, and even those in zoos (though I’m not a fan) will be accepted. Plus, engravings, paintings, statues, or any other representations of felines fit the theme. The Sphinx is also welcome ;).



Practical details:

Participation: Each VF member can submit up to 3 photos, until Monday, August 25th at 11:59 PM Paris time. Each photo must be posted in a separate message, with its number (1, 2, or 3). Don’t forget to add a little explanation (comment, location, etc.).

Voting: Each VF member can vote for the 3 photos they consider the best, based on their own criteria and the theme.

Voting will take place from Tuesday, August 26th to Saturday, August 30th at 11:59 PM Paris time.

Selected photos will be ranked in order of preference: - 1st photo: 3 points - 2nd photo: 2 points - 3rd photo: 1 point

The winner is the photographer with the most points.

Results will be published on August 31st. In case of a tie, the number of first-place votes will decide. The winner will have the honor of organizing September 2025’s contest.

Photos that have already been nominated (1st, 2nd, or 3rd place) in another contest are not eligible for this one.

My friend is supposed to leave on June 26th for Philadelphia. American Airlines called him last night to ask him to cancel or postpone his flight because they’re canceling around a hundred flights from Europe, mainly due to fears of retaliatory attacks after the bombings in Iran. Their offer is either to postpone with compensation (the amount would be known once he accepts) or to cancel completely with a refund and the standard compensation for flights departing from Europe. The airline gave him until 24 hours before departure to decide. Otherwise, he can still go to the airport for now with no obligation to board since he’s traveling alone—they’re prioritizing families in case of overbooking due to some flight cancellations. The same goes for the return flight. In short, it’s total chaos. We’re waiting until tonight or tomorrow to decide whether to cancel outright.

Originally planned for an official opening on July 3, 2025, the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo, which has already been partially open since autumn 2024, has had its official inauguration pushed back to the end of the year. This decision, made due to growing tensions in the Middle East, was motivated by the desire to give the event the international dimension it deserves.

Spanning 500,000 m²—larger than the Louvre (which has 360,000 m² of total space, including 73,000 m² of exhibition areas)—the museum will house up to 100,000 artifacts, including the complete collection of Tutankhamun and a monumental statue of Ramses II. And off we go again for what’s certainly our last trip to the American West... After the disaster of September 2022, the diabetes flare-up, and the pulmonary embolism, we’re spending ten days in the spots we missed and some unlikely places. After flying over Scotland, still English,

Greenland, still Danish,



And Lake Huron, still half Canadian,

We land early in Detroit... a nightmare of an airport. A long, dreadful baggage check process, but we still make it to gate A10 just in the nick of time—only for disaster to strike! My passport has my first and last name, my boarding pass has my first and last name, BUT not on Delta’s computer—so we’re denied boarding! We head to the Air France-Delta-KLM desk, where an employee listens to us sympathetically. He books us two seats on an 8:30 AM flight to SF... Then passes us off to two colleagues who offer us a night in a hotel... and send a message to the baggage service to keep our checked luggage safe... In the end, we go to bed earlier, wake up earlier, but since we’ll still get some sleep on the plane, we might be able to look back on this whole mess with a smile... well, we hope so, anyway. 10:17 PM in Detroit—time to sleep. Our clean clothes and toiletries are in the plane. We’ll bounce back!!;

A turbulent period came to an end around 2022.

Many of us have returned to big trips after making only very small ones—or none at all. For a little anecdote, my dentist told me that due to the lack of travel, a lot of clients treated themselves to implants they would’ve otherwise skipped. The joy of traveling again probably gave some vacationers smiles they hadn’t dared to show before!

Here, you can share what’s on your mind: Have these new, real trips disappointed you, rejuvenated you, or just relieved a long frustration?

For my part, not being so young anymore, there was definitely relief but no explosion of joy. I just had the feeling of picking up the thread of life after a foggy pause, with the bitter taste that 2 or 3 years of my life had been partly stolen from me.

Est-ce que vous prenez en considération le régime politique d'un pays lorsque vous choisissez une destination ? En d'autres termes, est-ce que vous décidez de ne pas vous rendre dans certains pays pour ne pas légitimer en quelque sorte le régime en place ?

Dans le LP sur la Birmanie, ils posent la question : "should you go there ?" et ensuite ils essaient de peser le pour et le contre dans un passage dédié. Faites-vous de même ?

Par exemple, iriez-vous en Corée du Nord, en Chine, en Biélorussie ou en Iran pour ne citer que quelques charmants pays amis des droits de l'Homme ? Si oui, vous sentez-vous le besoin de vous justifier, et comment ? Sinon, quels sont vos raisons qui vous font reculer ?

J'ai parlé de morale dans mon titre, est-ce que ce terme vous semble approprié ?
