For our latest 3-week family trip (yes, the kids are growing up, and two of them are about to enter the working world), we’re heading to South America! For our first time on this continent, I had planned a classic 3-week loop in Peru.

But since we won’t be returning to this part of the world anytime soon, I thought: why not follow in the footsteps of Franck, aka Bibouns51, who, in 18 days, didn’t just stick to Peru but also added two of the planet’s most stunning landscapes to his itinerary... the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia and its neighbor, the fabulous Atacama Desert in northern Chile !!

So, I set about the tricky task of limiting the regions we’d visit in Peru to those we considered must-sees, to avoid rushing too much. The visit schedules were optimized, including several comfortable overnight buses that have the huge advantage of letting us hop between regions.

So, we’re off on a somewhat adventurous trip with three domestic flights (two on the first day and one on the last), two overnight buses for quick hops, several car rentals, the services of a few drivers to make the trip more comfortable, and even a tour operator for crossing the Salar...

Our main concern is altitude sickness, and we’re bringing Diamox, aspirin, etc., just in case.

Our second worry before departure was not even getting off the ground... Yes, for once, we’re leaving from France—Marseille, to be exact. The week before our departure, with the surprise air traffic controllers’ strike, I remembered why we usually prefer to leave from abroad, like Turin or Barcelona... In the end, it wasn’t the air traffic controllers who made us nervous but the early July wildfires that paralyzed the airport a few days before our departure. Fortunately, the fires were quickly brought under control, and on the big day, everything was smooth sailing!

Day 0 - 11/07: Destination Lima

Our first flight from Marseille went smoothly to our Iberia layover in Madrid.

In Madrid, just after getting off the plane around 8 PM, and as we were walking through the terminal, we got a rude awakening!!

We saw the word "Cancelled" next to our flight number on the display boards. Thinking it must be a glitch, we checked another screen, but the system was stubborn, and the same dreaded word appeared !

So, we headed to the Iberia counter, where an agent confirmed that our Friday evening flight was canceled and rescheduled for the next morning. The reason? A breakdown and no replacement plane, even though we were in Madrid, Iberia’s home base!

To make matters worse, I remembered our super-tight schedule, planned to the minute, with no buffer day in Lima. Since I’m a bit phobic of megacities and hadn’t found anything appealing in the Peruvian capital in our guidebooks, we’d planned to leave Lima as soon as possible for Cusco, the heart of the Sacred Valley, to spend our first day there.

Bad idea, because we already knew the 4-hour buffer wouldn’t be enough, and we’d miss the domestic flight, which was, of course, non-refundable and non-changeable. So, we had to call LATAM from Madrid to find another flight for Saturday evening and negotiate a rate to recover some of our initial outlay.

After an hour on the phone with customer service, several endless holds, and three failed attempts to dictate our credit card number over the phone to a Spaniard speaking English with a thick accent, we finally managed to confirm the transaction, securing our new flight tickets for a moderate extra cost of just 150 € total.

At first, we were pretty bummed about losing a day and incurring extra fees to reschedule the domestic flight, but then, when we learned from an Iberia customer service rep that we’d receive the max compensation of 600 € per traveler, we even ended up grinning... because 3000 € in refunds for only losing the first day in Cusco? We’d sign up for that 10 times over!!

Iberia then took care of us, putting us up in a hotel where we had dinner before a short 5-hour night and an early morning departure. I took the opportunity to improvise a quick day of sightseeing in Lima, focusing on the Barranco and Miraflores districts.

A few friends and I are planning to explore the northern shore of Lake Titicaca, making stops using local buses or collectivos. The route starts in Huancane, passes through places like Moho and Conima (on the Peruvian side), then crosses the border and continues into Bolivia via spots like Escoma, Ancoraines, Achacachi, and Huarina. I can’t find any info on transportation between these towns. It also seems there are no listed hotels or other types of accommodations.

Personally, I’ve already visited several places on the southern shore of the lake.

Questions: Is this less touristy route along the northern shore—compared to the southern route via Unguyo and Copacabana—worth it? Are there buses that cover the northern shore in both Peru and Bolivia? What accommodations do you know of along this route? Alternatively, is it possible to rent a car in Puno to circle the entire lake, and which reliable agencies would you recommend? Thanks for your suggestions! 😉

Hello, We’re planning a trip to Chile for next December (2025) as a family with our two kids (6 and 8 years old). We’ve scheduled a week in San Pedro to take our time exploring the area, and we’re wondering whether to extend into Bolivia to see the Salar de Uyuni, the Laguna Verde and Laguna Colorada, the Desert of Dalí, etc.—basically the short loop that a lot of tour operators offer. What’s making me hesitate is the altitude—there are stretches at 5,000 meters, and I’m wondering if that’s too risky for the kids, since the risk of AMS (acute mountain sickness) is high at that elevation. Has anyone here done this loop with their kids? If so, could you share your experience? Thanks so much!

I’m currently on a motorcycle trip through South America. I’m riding a Honda XR 150L registered in Chile, which I bought in my name. I have my Chilean RUT and the *padrón* (vehicle registration) for the bike. I’m traveling solo and planning to visit the Salar de Uyuni, Cusco, and Machu Picchu before returning to Santiago in the next 60 days.

I tried crossing the border at Ollagüe, but I was denied entry into Bolivia even though I have all the necessary paperwork. The customs officers told me I needed to be a Chilean resident to enter with a Chilean-registered motorcycle, which I’m not (I only have the RUT).

I’m looking for: -A more flexible alternative to cross into Bolivia (or even Argentina or Peru if necessary). -Recent experiences from other travelers who entered Bolivia with a Chilean-registered motorcycle. -Possible solutions (additional documents? international insurance? special visa or permit?).

I’m open to adjusting my itinerary, but I’d really like to continue the trip with my motorcycle. Thanks in advance for any help or advice! !

I’m planning to take Air France from Paris to Trujillo with my 2 bikes in boxes. I have a layover in Lima and a change to LATAM Airlines for Trujillo. On the way back, it’s Santa Cruz in Bolivia via Lima (LATAM Airlines) and then Air France to Paris. During the layovers in Lima, do I need to collect my luggage and the bike boxes and re-check them for the second flight? It’s really hard to get through to Air France for this kind of question.

I’m planning a journey of about 2500 km starting from San Pedro de Atacama (duration: max. 2 months). This trip, almost entirely on remote trails, promises to be an extraordinary adventure.

Nous sommes une petite famille avec deux enfants qu'ils auront 8 et 11 ans au moment du départ. Nous avons l'intention de partir entre septembre et janvier pour visiter (dans cet ordre) le Pérou, la Bolivie puis la Colombie. Même si c'est encore incertain à ce stade, nous envisageons très certainement d'acheter un véhicule au Pérou, de faire l'intégralité de notre voyage avec et de revenir le vendre au Pérou. On s'est fixé sur 5 mois mais peut-être prolongerons-nous ce voyage de quelques semaines.... Pour ce qui est de l'école j'ai l'intention de faire les cours aux enfants en gardant contact avec les classes qu'ils devront réintégrer au retour. Mais là aussi rien est encore tout à fait défini. Nous aurions voulu échanger avec des familles qui va vivent la même expérience ou qu'ils ont vécu. Nous allons prévoir un itinéraire même s'il y a de grandes chances qu'une fois sur place on se laisse bercer par nos envies et surtout nos rencontres.

Vos plus belles (ou mauvaises) expériences de randonnée sur des Volcans au Nord du Chili (Putre / San Pedro / etc) ou en Bolivie pour m’aider dans ma décision... Merci

- Peut-on acheter un véhicule au Pérou et descendre jusqu'en Argentine ?

- Le passage des frontières Pérou/Bolivie, Bolivie/Chili et Chili/Argentine se fait il facilement avec un véhicule du Pérou ?

Le trajet serait Lima, Ica, Aréquipa, Cuscos, Micchu Picchu, Puno, La Paz, Sucre, Potosi, le Salar, Tupiza, Salta, Cafayate, Buenos Aeres et finir à Montévidéo. Quelqu'un pourrait il me conseiller une cie de Bus ou de privilégier le taxi pour ces différents trajets - Cusco La PAZ, Sucre Potosi Uyuni, Uyuni Tupiza, Tupiza Salta. Je suis en train d'organiser un voyage d'un mois au sud du Pérou, en Bolivie et au nord du Chili en juillet et en août. Je compte me déplacer quasi-exclusivement en bus. Je vais finir mon trajet en Bolivie par le Sud Lipez (en partant de Tupiza, et en arrivant à Uyuni), et j'aimerais me rendre de Uyuni à San Pedro de Atacama au Chili. J'ai trouvé des bus sur internet mais très peu d'informations dessus (tarifs, meilleur compagnie), savez-vous comment se passe le passage de la frontière ? De plus, je dois ensuite me rendre à Antofagasta, mais je ne trouve aucune information sur internet puisque que les sites que j'ai trouvé permettent de réserver les bus à peine 3 semaines à l'avance. Savez-vous si il y a des compagnies locales qui font ce trajet ?

Pensez-vous qu'il est plus simple de faire un tour du Salar depuis Tupiza jusqu'à San Pedro directement ? Sachant que je souhaite faire l’ascension d'un volcan, est-ce que ce n'est pas un trajet moins commun (donc plus cher) ?

Bonjour à tous 🙂 Après un voyage en Colombie durant le mois de mars prochain j'envisageais un combiné Pérou/Bolivie au mois d'avril. Je précise que je ne suis pas spécialement limité en temps puisque je voyage jusqu'à fin mai, mais je me suis juste fixé approximativement 1 mois pour ce combiné. Je souhaite garder le mois de mai en Amérique Centrale. J'ai donc quelques questions. 1°) Tout d'abord en fonction de la saison, dois-je plutôt commencer par le Pérou ou la Bolivie ? J'arriverai de Colombie, très certainement par un vol... 2°) Si je me fixe 4 semaines, comment répartir mon temps entre le 2 pays ? Moitié moitié ? 3°) N'hésitez pas à me proposer quelques itinéraires... 😎 4°) Je suis plutôt un habitué du voyage léger et j'ai cru comprendre que par rapport à mes expériences passées (essentiellement Asie du sud-Est) j'aurais peut être à me charger d'avantage en vêtement chaud puisqu'en altitude je risque d'être surpris par des températures basses... Du coup en avril, pour Pérou/Bolivie, j'emmène quoi dans mon sac (Polaire ? bonnet ? Le 23 mai 2020, je pars avec un ami pour 2 semaines (environ) en Bolivie avant de rejoindre le Pérou. Ayant peur, comme l'an dernier, qu'il ne reste plus de place, nous avons déjà réservé le trek de l'inca vers le Machu Picchu pour le 10 juin. Idéalement, nous aimerions arriver à Cusco le 8 juin.

Ma question est la suivante : Quel itinéraire nous conseillerez-vous pour la Bolivie ?

Nous nous imaginions atterrir à Santa Cruz avant de bouger dans la sens des aiguilles d'une montre. Santa Cruz puis Sucre et Potosi avant de rejoindre le Salar d'Uyuni (4j/3n). Nous remonterions vers le volcan Sajama avant d'aller à La Paz pour finir vers le Lac Titicaca (Copacabana, la Isla del sol) avant de quitte le sol bolivien. (ou vaut-il finir par La Paz ?)

Est ce que tout cela vous semble possible en 2 semaines et cohérent ? Quels autres lieux nous conseillerez-vous de visiter ? J'ai lu que certaines personnes ne s'arrêtaient pas à Sucre...

Nous nous rendons le mois prochain au Chili.

Nous passerons quelques jours à San Pedro de Atacama avant de faire une excursion de 4 jours dans le sud Lipez en Bolivie. Pour les pesos chiliens, nous effectuerons des retraits sur place avec la carte bancaire mais pour les bolivianos, comment faire pour s'en procurer avant d'entrer en Bolivie ?

Faut-il faire le change en France avant de partir ? Ou est-ce qu'il y a un bureau de change à San Pedro où nous pourrons récupérer des bolivianos ?

Pour info, nous atterrissons à Santiago et reprenons un avion directement pour Calama donc il ne nous sera pas possible de faire le change dans le centre de Santiago.
