Hello, I’ve been retired since 2018 and travel solo every winter. But after my sons pointed out: “riding alone through Laos on a bike! Safety-wise, there’s room for improvement.” I’m getting older and need to be more careful. That’s the reason for this post. The idea is to look out for each other if needed, while still keeping our independence and privacy. I’ll be in Laos starting December 6th, then probably Thailand in January since I want to do some diving. After that, it’s all improvisation—nothing’s set in stone. If the destination and the concept interest you, well, we can just chat about it.

At the start of November, a bit of rest before winter will be perfect to kick off this travel journal. There aren’t many recent journals about this part of the world, so I’ll take the plunge—my way of celebrating the (unexpected) return of this forum, which has been such a big part of my life for over 15 years.

So, back to Asia at the end of 2023. After Myanmar in 2015 and Vietnam in 2018, we’ve chosen Laos this time. And when talking with friends (you know how it is—everyone asks, "So, where are you going this year?"), a couple of friends asked to join us ("You see, my wife dreams of a trip to Asia, and I dream of traveling like you, independently"). We’ve spent a week with them (and other friends) in Portugal, so we know they’re easygoing and flexible. They’ll only be with us after Christmas (due to lots of grandkids), so deal—we’re bringing them along! A new experience for us.

A new experience that’ll start with tweaking the itinerary. Originally, I planned to stay a month in Laos, but what could be more magical for my friend’s wife than discovering Asia by way of Angkor! Plus, our two daughters asked for some beach time at the end of the trip! So, it’ll be Laos and Cambodia—neither of which we’ve visited before, so no complaints there.

The route will be pretty classic, though a bit scattered to fit our dates and wishes. For us, we’ll arrive in Luang Prabang (LP) to take some time to acclimate, then a few days in the northern Laos mountains, Nong Khiaw and Muang Ngoi. Back to LP for a direct flight to Pakse. Yes, I know—so many amazing places we’ll miss along the way, but as you know, choosing means letting go... From Pakse, I’m leaving a few days open (no bookings), but I’m eyeing Champassak and the 4,000 Islands. That’s where Mariel and Naty (our friends!) will join us on December 30th. I’ve tentatively added the Bolaven Plateau loop to the plan (still no bookings). Their Laos adventure will be short—by January 3rd, we’ll cross the border into Cambodia, heading straight to Siem Reap for 5 days. Then, I’ll fulfill my promise with a magical detour to Koh Rong Sanloem via a night bus (a must-do in Asia!). On to Phnom Penh for 2 days—where our trip ends, while Mariel and Naty will stop in Bangkok for 3 days before flying home.

So, fasten your seatbelts, flight attendants at the doors, and sorry for the long intro—here we go on this Asian adventure!

Hi there, I’ll be in Laos and then Cambodia from mid-to-late December until early February. I haven’t been to Laos before, but I already know Cambodia. I plan to arrive via northern Thailand and leave from Bangkok (it’s a question of flight prices). I’m used to traveling by local transport and staying in simple guesthouses, with internal flights if needed. Sightseeing, exploring, and connecting with locals are my priorities. If anyone’s interested in joining for part or all of this trip, we can chat and discuss. I only have a rough itinerary so far. See you soon, Francoise

Does it seem feasible and reasonable to travel to Laos (or Cambodia) as early as January or February 2025? I don’t have any precise information about the damage these countries have suffered.

Who’s up for an amazing trip alternating karst landscapes, jungle, rice terraces, plains, easy hikes, and a paradise island off Sihanoukville? We’ll arrive via Chiang Rai in northern Thailand, cross the border, take a boat on the Mekong, and travel by road to discover mountain tribes, Luang Prabang and its wonders, then hop on an ultra-fast TGV train to Vientiane. Il y a plus d'un an maintenant, j'ai passé 10 semaines en Asie du Est, passant brièvement en Thaïlande ainsi qu'au Cambodge, pour passer 1 mois au Laos puis 4 semaines en Birmanie. Pendant ce voyage, j'ai tenu un carnet de voyage au quotidien, et j'ai enfin pris le temps de tout saisir sur mon blog, le confinement aura au moins servi à cela !

J’y ai inséré des photos correspondant au moment décrit pour rendre la lecture plus plaisante, et mieux s’immerger ! J’essaie aussi de donner des informations concrètes, comme le prix des chambres, d’indiquer ce que j’ai mangé et combien j’ai payé le plat, le prix des tickets de transports, etc… Histoire de faire de ce journal de voyage quelque chose de vivant. En espérant qu’il soit agréable à lire.

Mon équipière et moi avons pu bénéficier du rapatriement organisé par l'ambassade du Laos le 2 avril dernier, mais nous nous interrogeons sur le devenir de nos compatriotes restés au Laos, volontairement ou non : santé, hébergement, restauration, comportement de la population locale, difficultés de rapatriement le cas échéant pour ceux qui le souhaitent... Je suis à Vientiane et je comptais acheter de la micropur ou des comprimés pour purifier l'eau dans l'optique d'aller ensuite faire un trek dans le nord du Laos mais je n'arrive pas à en trouver (j'ai essayé plusieurs pharmacies dont une assez grande, mais niet)

Quelqu'un saurait où je pourrai en trouver ? Ou un truc similaire (pour pouvoir boire l'eau des cours d'eau/sources en montagne en cas d'urgence)

Bonsoir, Je serai au Laos (en individuel) fin de semaine prochaine. Je cherche une bonne adresse pour louer un scooter pour 6 jours à Luang Prabang pour éviter de se faire arnaquer (notamment le vol de celui-ci par le loueur lui-même)

Comme beaucoup de personne mon billet direction le Laos avec escale à Pékin a été modifié. Bien entendu les horaires aller et retour ne correspondent plus, puisque j'ai pris les billets de trains en France en conséquence. De plus, nous avons pris des billets d'avion Bangkok/Vang Vieng car étant moins cher pour aller au Laos, avec la compagnie air Laos.

Au final: Air China annonce le remboursement des billets de SA compagnie, mais l'agence Carrefour voyage est incapable de nous donner des informations pour l'instant.

On ne sait pas si les billets d'avions acheté pour aller au laos avec Air Laos seront remboursés. Des personnes dans ce cas? Une idée sur le remboursement des billets qui ne sont pas de la compagnie Air China? Sans parler des bus réservés au laos ect..

C'est certainement plus raisonnable d'annuler, mais les informations concernant les remboursements sont difficiles à obtenir de l'agence Carrefour Voyage.

Bonjour à tous nous partons en février pour une bonne semaine au Laos Nous descendrons le Mékong en slow boat de Huay Xai à Luang Prabang. Suite à une opération du pied nous ne pouvons pas faire de rando .Est il alors judicieux de prévoir Nong Kwiau et Muang Ngoi à notre itinéraire ? Merci pour vos conseils

Nous serons au Laos de mi-juillet à mi-août. Nous avons l'habitude de louer une voiture et de conduire à l'étranger (Indonésie, Bali, Thaïlande, Namibie, Botswana, Mexique, Guatemala...) mais pour ce voyage-ci, nous ne trouvons que très peu d'informations sur la conduite au Laos (mis à part que c'est dangereux et qu'un chauffeur c'est mieux ;O). Nous souhaiterions savoir à quoi ressemble l'itinéraire Luang Prabang-Pakse en voiture : état des routes, type de routes, endroit où dormir sur le trajet, possibilité de faire le plein d'essence et surtout y a-t-il un intérêt à le faire (vie villageoise, paysages...).

Je vous sollicite car je vais partir en Thaïlande en mars, et j'aurais un peu de temps vers mi-mars/fin mars et j'hésite à visiter alors entre le Laos et le Cambodge.

C'est surtout au niveau de la sécheresse, on m'a dit qu'elle serait très prononcée à cette période et plus au Laos.

Des personnes peuvent-elles m'éclairer pendant cette période ?

Je recherche des compagnies qui assurent le trajet Luang Prabang Van Vieng et qui sont fiables, voire un trajet de nuit. Sinon, qui recommande d'aller directement à Vientiane sans passer par Van Vieng? Merci pour votre aide Michèle

Actuellement à Vientiane au Laos, nous prévoyons de monter sur Luang Prabang d'ici quelques jours. Là-bas nous souhaiterions réaliser une boucle en itinérance à vélo avec départ et retour sur LP. Malheureusement je ne trouve que peu d'infos sur ce type de projet. Auriez-vous des propositions d'itinéraires (Compter 60km/jour) ? Connaissez-vous un bon loueur sur LP ?

Je précise que nous ne souhaitons pas faire de boucle en scooter. Nous souhaitons changer de mode de transport.
