Okay, here I go—I haven’t done a cruise review in ages, and even longer since I’ve posted one on this forum. So, this is kinda your fault, Catherine, if I’m getting back into it... I just hope I haven’t lost my touch!
It’s a transatlantic cruise, so there are a lot of sea days. That means this review will mostly focus on the ship, especially the "Haven" section, which doesn’t get much coverage on this forum. There’ll definitely be some comparisons with MSC’s Yacht Club, since they’re direct competitors.
This will be my third cruise with NCL—a company I really love—but my first in The Haven.
My two previous cruises were on smaller ships: the NCL Sun for the Chilean fjords and the NCL Spirit in February 2025 in Asia, departing from Taiwan and arriving in Korea. I *loved* the Spirit.

I kinda stumbled upon this one, and the itinerary appealed to me. I also found the balcony cabin price pretty good—around 2800 € for a balcony cabin (for two), all-inclusive package included. Not including flights, of course. In the end, we decided to try The Haven (obviously not the same price), but I think we got a great deal for the promised perks.

Comoros again: trip report
Well, I still feel a bit lonely about this destination—no requests for info, no travel journals, or trip reports since I last posted over a year ago. A little disheartening.
That said, I did cross paths with slightly more tourists this time. Not a ton, but enough to notice compared to my last stay. Beyond that, not much has changed—the people are just as lovely, and every interaction, whether at the market, in the medinas, in town, or in the countryside, was positive. It was so pleasant; my "alert meter" stayed at zero the whole time (which is pretty different from some other places I visit now and then). The roads outside the cities remain dangerous, and the accident rate seems high. Best to drive during the day and take it easy (on some rough stretches, you don’t really have a choice anyway). The scattered plastic and metal waste hasn’t magically disappeared, and it’s still pretty discouraging to see the most beautiful beaches surrounded by empty bottles, straws, diapers, and rusted carcasses of an old Xantia or a skeletal Espace. When it’s not on the beach itself (since those are cleaned), it’s just a few meters away. Usually, there’s not much in the water or close to shore—the seabeds are gorgeous, with coral and a wide variety of scaly friends... But stepping back onto the hardened lava, you dodge a chip bag or a shriveled battery. Such a paradox. Honestly, it’s like this almost everywhere except on hotel beaches or those far from human settlements. But otherwise, in places like Chomoni, Bouni, Itsandra, Moya, and Domoni (on Anjouan), Nioumachoua (on Mohéli, and even on the nearby islets), it’s hard to ignore. And it unfortunately tarnishes the beauty of these otherwise stunning spots.
That said, you can still find secluded micro-bays, protected and remote, where this isn’t an issue. And where there are hotels—like in Petite Itsandra in Moroni, in front of Laka Lodge in Nioumachoua, Trou du Prophète, or even Chomoni (though the surrounding areas are so littered...)—the beaches are cleaned, so...
So why go? Why still love it despite all this? Well, first, the Comorians themselves—that’s already essential and probably the main reason. Then there’s the breathtaking topography: the imposing Karthala, the dizzying peaks and cliffs of Anjouan, vast ravines, a tortured geology covered in lush nature, and Mohéli, much more serene and gentle, blanketed in spice plants and trees with names that make you dream, like an open-air spice market. The flora across the islands—the fields, trees, scents: clove trees, cinnamon trees, lychee, mango, cardamom, nutmeg, vanilla, coconut palms, banana trees, coffee plants, cocoa... A profusion of green dotted with red, white, and yellow berries and flowers... The seabeds are stunning in many places, and there are some beautiful beaches/oceanfront spots, especially near Trou du Prophète (but not only there). The history and culture—between traditional festivals, but especially the medinas with their staircases, covered passages, palaces, and mosques that create Escher-like constructions. I love wandering through them for hours, stumbling upon an unlikely shop, a more or less philosophical saying like "pain is a warning," "a promise is a debt," or the less original "little by little, the bird makes its nest." A grocery store, women negotiating freshly caught fish (usually tuna, immediately cut and ready to sell), kids playing, old men playing checkers, a call to prayer... In Moroni, Mutsamudu, and Domoni, I spent most of my "urban" time.
If anyone’s interested—though given the hype about Comoros on the forum, I doubt it—but if you need info on accommodation across the three islands, some restaurants, or sites to visit, don’t hesitate to ask.

How do you feel about coming back to France?
Hi there, I’ve been traveling for 18 years now, at least 6 months a year, and as the years go by, I actually enjoy coming back to France more and more—a feeling I struggled with at first. I mean, we always think the grass is greener elsewhere.
But in the end, I find meaning in that saying about how there’s no place like home. I still love traveling just as much, but now my trips are shorter, and I enjoy spending more time in our beautiful country, even though I don’t hesitate to criticize it.
How about you? How do you handle coming back from your travels?

Flight Change by Kuwait Airways - Booked via Trip
Hey everyone,
We bought a ticket a month ago on Trip. It was supposed to be a flight leaving at 2:30 AM to arrive in Kuwait at 4:30 AM to catch a connecting flight with the same airline (Kuwait Airways) at 8:30 AM the same day, arriving in Paris at 12:45 PM. But Trip just informed us that KA "modified" the first flight to depart at 1:20 PM, which means we’ll miss the second leg of the journey. No alternative offered for that portion. After checking, the only solution is to take the flight the next day—so more than 17 hours of layover. We have to go back to work the next day, even though we’d planned a rest day. Trip’s only options are to cancel or accept the change!!! We asked them to propose an alternative flight, but their response was to contact the airline. We did, and their answer? Wait a bit longer for the final schedule!!! From my research, this counts as a cancellation or at least a delay of over 3 hours, so the airline is obligated to find us an alternative flight and compensate us. Has anyone had this experience with this airline or another? Any advice? Thanks in advance
EasyJet in Nice: Fight Over Refusal to Pay Baggage Fee
The couple involved refused to pay the extra fee demanded by the flight coordination company. Things quickly escalated. It got so bad that the man ended up physically fighting with an airport agent, even rolling on the ground.

Trip report: Our South Africa journey in July

We’re back from our 3-week trip to South Africa in July. It was a family trip with our four grown-up kids (ages 18 to 25).
First off, I’d like to thank everyone on this forum for their great tips—they really helped us plan this trip!
The trip: We spent 15 days between Port Elizabeth and Cape Town, then a week around Kruger (including Blyde River Canyon). We found South Africans to be welcoming and always ready to help. We never felt unsafe (just followed basic safety rules). The police are very visible, especially on the roads.
Logistics: We’d booked our accommodations in advance but made a few changes on the spot based on how we felt at the time. We rented two vehicles from Firefly (Hertz). No complaints—recent cars, quick returns, and the deposit wasn’t charged. We’d gotten our international driver’s permits... which stayed in France! Luckily, no one asked for them. Driving on the left wasn’t an issue (it wasn’t our first time). The roads we took were in good, even great, condition. Only a few tracks to lodges or parks were rough and required extra caution. Lots of pedestrians on the sides of roads, even highways. And plenty of very slow trucks. But they pull over to let you pass. It’s also common for cars to cross into the opposite lane to overtake, even with white lines. We took two domestic flights: one early in the morning (Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth) and one in the late afternoon (Cape Town to Johannesburg) to save time.
We had some highlights and a few disappointments—all part of the journey! More details coming soon.

What to choose for a first summer trip to Asia: Indonesia or Thailand?

I’m planning my first trip to Asia next summer with my partner and our daughter, who’ll be 3 and a half at the time, for 4 weeks (maybe 5).
I’ve heard that the timing is better for visiting Indonesia, but I’m hesitant because Thailand seems more accessible, and I’m worried that traveling to Indonesia during high season might be less enjoyable and a lot more expensive due to the number of tourists. We love cultural sites as much as natural ones, and we’re big foodies. We’re not necessarily looking for luxury and tend to take our time, travel by public transport, and look for accommodations with a good value for money—though we do occasionally splurge on a high-end restaurant.
I’m also wondering when and where to buy flight tickets and how comfortable the journey will be (especially for our daughter) if we fly with Thai Airways or Garuda.

Payment Issue with Saudi Airlines

I’m facing a rather unusual issue with SAUDI AIRLINES.
I booked a flight to Jakarta with a layover in Jeddah for July directly on their website on February 25th, paying for our three tickets via PAYPAL.
I quickly received confirmation that my flight was booked and our e-tickets were issued.
However, after several days, I noticed we were never charged for the tickets, and I saw on our PayPal account that the payment authorization was still pending.
At first, I chalked it up to cross-border or banking delays… but since I use PayPal often and the debit from my bank account is usually almost immediate, I called PayPal. They told me that neither they nor I had anything more to do: when a transaction is paid using their solution, the payment is systematically validated by the seller before the transaction (an automated process, I imagine). However, PayPal confirmed that SAUDI hadn’t done this and that they had a month to do so, otherwise the transaction would be canceled by PAYPAL and SAUDI wouldn’t receive the funds. There must have been a technical glitch because normally, I shouldn’t have received the tickets until they had received the payment.
Given the reviews I’ve read about their customer service, I’m worried they might cancel our tickets without notice once they realize their mistake—or that they’ll ask us to pay the amount at that point (since the closer we get to the date, the higher the price goes).
So, I’ve been trying to contact them nonstop via their app (I’ve submitted about 10 tickets), I’ve called them, messaged them on Messenger and Instagram, and so far, I haven’t gotten any response. Either they don’t read my message to the end and just reply that the flight is confirmed + resend the tickets, or more recently, they tell me the issue is being handled by another department. We tried calling them again on Saturday, but no luck—the French-speaking agents were always busy. On Messenger, they keep asking for the secret code sent by SMS at the start of the conversation, but of course, I never receive anything even though my number is correctly registered in my SAUDI account.
I don’t know what else to do, and I’m not sure if I’m right to worry they might cancel our tickets.
I’m afraid this could jeopardize our dream trip, for which I’ve already booked hotels and activities… and we were really looking forward to it.

What else, I wonder...
Personally, I often prioritize simple destinations (no administrative hassles), where I’m not at risk (nothing extraordinary like getting kidnapped by Daesh or ending up in a jail cell because the current geopolitics aren’t favorable to my passport, etc.), and where I can drive.
Wide-open natural spaces are more my thing than urban anthills.
Finally, I try not to spend three days on a plane to reach my destination, and I aim for a maximum budget of 3500 € (for 3 weeks) in comfortable conditions—that means charming hotels, good meals, etc.

So where are they and what are they doing?
This catchy and somewhat mysterious title comes from several questions I’ve been asking myself.
VF has been back open for a reasonable number of weeks and months now. The number of visitors overall matches past averages, but the number of members online in the last 24 hours seems relatively lower than what we used to see.
Yet, to my surprise, I’m seeing fewer travel journals, way fewer messages, and way fewer questions. I don’t see many new registered users online, and I notice a number of members who are logged in but either aren’t participating or have stopped participating.
Something’s not adding up for me because, in my opinion, VF is still appealing, and I don’t see which other sites could really compete.
Was there a real break between pre- and post-Covid? Does it just take more time for some people to discover the site or learn that it’s active again? Do people now prefer quick consumption on sites like FB or others I’m not familiar with? Where have the site’s old-timers gone, and what are they doing with their time now? What’s really going on here?

Something’s not adding up for me because, in my opinion, VF is still appealing, and I don’t see which other sites could really compete.
Was there a real break between pre- and post-Covid? Does it just take more time for some people to discover the site or learn that it’s active again? Do people now prefer quick consumption on sites like FB or others I’m not familiar with? Where have the site’s old-timers gone, and what are they doing with their time now? What’s really going on here?
Accommodation near the beach in Koh Samui
Hi there, We're thinking of spending 3 weeks in Koh Samui at the start of 2026. Where can we find accommodation close to a pretty beach that's not too touristy but not isolated either, near a small town or village? We've already been to Surin Beach on Phuket Island. We really liked that spot, but we've heard Koh Samui is great too. Thanks for your tips!

Hi everyone, I’ve spent two solid months reading the Lonely Planet and pretty much every post about Thailand here, plus French and English blogs. Now I’d love to get your expert opinions on our itinerary.
We’re heading off in August 2025 with our 7-year-old daughter. We only have a maximum of three weeks off, and I’m keeping an eye on flight prices before booking (1400 € per person really stings 😕).
So here’s what I’ve planned—let me know if you spot any major issues or if I’ve been way too "optimistic."

I know a lot of you recommend heading straight to Chiang Mai to recover from the international flight, but my partner and I NEVER sleep on planes (personally, I’ve been flying to Taiwan since I was little and have never slept more than an hour on a 14-hour flight...), so it’s essential for us to rest upon arrival . That’s also why I opted for domestic flights instead of the sleeper train—I know we’d lose over 10 hours and wouldn’t be able to rest properly in those conditions. And I’m sure you’ll also say BKK > North > South is too much for three weeks, but I really want to see as much as possible. Given how much the flights will cost, I’m not sure when we’ll be able to come back 🏴☠️.
So, questions: 1. Since we’ll only be in Bangkok for a maximum of two nights and need to easily reach the airport with luggage (and a child), which neighborhood should we prioritize? We’d love to experience the evening vibe of Asian night markets, ideally within walking distance of the hotel or just a few metro stops away. I’ve looked at Chinatown, but the BTS seems far... Should we go for somewhere near BTS Saphan Taksin or BTS Krungthonburi? But is the area lively in the evening with food courts, etc.? We’d also like to treat ourselves to a hotel with a pool.
2. Have we planned too many days in the south? Should I skip Koh Tao and just do Koh Samui + Koh Phangan? My partner and daughter aren’t strong swimmers, so we’re looking for beautiful beaches without too much current. Crowded beaches don’t bother us—we just want stunning turquoise waters without killer waves . Going all the way to Koh Tao and then back to Koh Samui to catch the flight to Bangkok seems too stressful. Is it still possible these days (I haven’t seen any recent posts on this) to head to Koh Samui in August and decide on the spot how many nights to spend in Koh Phangan or Koh Tao based on how we feel, booking hotels as we go? Or is that too risky?
If you have any better suggestions for fitting all this in while reducing internal flights, I’m all ears for your great tips

A turbulent period came to an end around 2022.
Many of us have returned to big trips after making only very small ones—or none at all. For a little anecdote, my dentist told me that due to the lack of travel, a lot of clients treated themselves to implants they would’ve otherwise skipped. The joy of traveling again probably gave some vacationers smiles they hadn’t dared to show before!

For my part, not being so young anymore, there was definitely relief but no explosion of joy. I just had the feeling of picking up the thread of life after a foggy pause, with the bitter taste that 2 or 3 years of my life had been partly stolen from me.

Les billets étaient pris depuis novembre. Très incertain depuis ce printemps marqué par l'épidémie, ce voyage en Grèce est une bouffée d'air (chaud) après cette période de confinement et d'immobilisme. Nous reprenons donc la route en camion, vers la Grèce continentale. Routes montagneuses, sites antiques, eaux cristallines et ports de pêche, voici en quelques mots les contours d'un voyage riche en couleurs et en saveurs... Les cigales ? Elles ne s'arrêtent qu'à la nuit tombée...
18/07/2020 Jour : 478 km Total : 478 km Départ traditionnel et tardif de Vendée après une quinzaine de jours de vacances.
La cathédrale de Nantes est en feu, le périphérique est bloqué. Challans, Niort, Montluçon, nous prenons la poudre d'escampette en dehors des sentiers battus afin d'éviter le coût exorbitant des péages français. Petit parking très au calme à Rocles quelque part dans l'Allier entre La Prugnole et Blanchetière. Pour celles et ceux qui ne visualisent pas, nous sommes à une trentaine de kilomètres au sud-ouest de Moulins. Les enfants ramassent des bâtons qu'ils jettent dans le lac tandis que mes talents de bricoleur se confirment: le mitigeur nouvellement installé inonde le camion.

- Le tourisme représente quel pourcentage du PIB des Philippines ?
- Est-ce que vous savez combien de personnes travaillent dans la branche touristique aux Philippines ?
- Je lis, un peu partout, qu'il arrive assez souvent que les transports en commun aient un peu, voir beaucoup de retard. Si vous deviez vous déplacer d'un point A à un point B et que ce trajet requière plusieurs transports publics. Est-ce que vous prenez vos billets, un à la fois, par étape ? Ou est-ce que vous prenez tout vos billets en même temps ? Exemple aller de Cebu à Pandan, il y a des bus et des ferrys.
- Je regarde des vlogs sur Youtube. Je vois que dans les principaux endroits, comme Manille, Cebu, la plupart des gens portent un masque. Est ce que certains d'entre -vous ont pris connaissance de la situation concernant le Costa Diadema qui est vendu sur le site Costa pour la Transat vers les Emirats au départ de Marseille le 26/09/2020 et également le même bateau aux mêmes dates sur le site TMR pour des croisères JAZZ en méditerranée. Costa répond sans hésitation que la transat est maintenue avec le Diadema.........TMR maintient ses affirmations relatives à leurs croisières Jazz. J'ai le privilège d'organiser le concours photos du moi de juin 2010. J'ai longuement hésité, beaucoup de sujets ont été déjà proposés et faire preuve d’originalité devient de plus en plus compliqué. Il fallait choisir, j'ai choisi : « Multicolore » : « Qui présente des couleurs variées » d 'après la définition. Je n'impose pas le nombre minimum de couleurs présentes, sachant que des photos avec seulement 2 couleurs pourront faire partie du thème, à partir du moment où elles sont en harmonie et que ça « éclate ». En effet, je voudrais que quand on ouvrira une photo, il y ait l'effet : « WHOUAAAAA, les couleurs... « Il faudra malgré tout garder à l'idée la notion de voyage.
Je pense que le thème laisse une grande ouverture.
On pourra présenter une multitude de sujets :
Pourquoi pas des animaux multicolores ?
Des bâtiments multicolores ?
Des personnages ?
Des objets ?
Des scènes de vie ?
Et bien d'autres...
Participation : Chaque participant(e) peut proposer jusqu'à 3 photos, et ce jusqu'au mardi 23/06 à 24h00, heure de Paris. Chaque photo sera présentée dans un seul message, en indiquant son numéro (1, 2 ou 3). Pensez à ajouter une petite explication, commentaire, localisation, date de prise de vue.
Vote : Chaque membre VF peut voter pour les 3 photos qu'il ou elle juge les meilleures selon ses propres critères et en tenant compte du thème.
Les votes se feront du mercredi 24/06 au dimanche 28/06 à 24h00, heure de Paris. Les photos choisies seront citées dans l'ordre de préférence : - la 1re photo : 3 points - la 2e : 2 points - la 3e : 1 point
Un seul et unique vote pour 3 photos est accepté par membre.

j'attends depuis 1 mois un retour de TRAVELGENIO pour mon remboursement LYON KUALA LUMPUR SUITE ANNULATION DES VOLS PAR QUATAR AIRWAY 17285491 (L22HA4) . Auriez-vous un conseil sur procédures, dépôt de plainte, ... Pour comparaison, mes hôtels en Malaisie viennent d'être remboursés en 48 h par BOOKING.COM. A l'heure du covid, ce n'est donc pas un problème de quantités de demande mais bien une démarche volontaire de freiner. Mauvais calcul car les gens vont voyager mais différemment cet été. L'argent récupérée sera automatiquement réinjecter dans l'économie du tourisme et tous le monde sera gagnant. La ces pseudo agences de voyages creusent leur tombe ( je suis également en attente sur des vols interne en Malaisie avec budgetair et lastminute : la idem, il y a personne ). Donc personnellement à l'avenir, je passerais directement par les sites des compagnies aérienne ( en ayant préalablement fait une recherche par skyscanner, algofly, ...) et je conseille à tous ceux qui sont dans mon cas de faire pareil. C'est pas plus cher et au moins si j'étais passé directement par quatar airways je serai déjà remboursé ( eux sont joignables)

J'ai beaucoup de mal à préparer un circuit de 20 jours au départ d’Helsinki jusqu'en Laponie (nous partirions le 1er septembre à condition de le pouvoir bien sûr ^^)
Il n'y a pas énormément de carnets de voyage et lorsque j'en trouve, les destinations ne sont jamais les mêmes et je suis donc un peu perdue pour organiser l'itinéraire.
Nous sommes déjà aller à Kittila passer le réveillon en 2016 : ce fut un coup de coeur ! et nous avons décider d'explorer ce pays l'automne étant amoureux bien évidemment de la nature et des animaux. L'idée de dormir dans un chalet au bord d'un lac serait tout simplement magique !
et peut on bivouaquer éventuellement quelques fois ?
Nous lourions donc une voiture à Helsinki (en y restant 2 jours).
Pourriez vous m'aider et me donner les incontournables des parcs ou lacs à ne pas manquer sur la route jusqua'u nord .. nous resterions 2 jours à chaque étape à peu près.
Nous avons pensé à la location d'un camping car mais nous ne pourrions alors faire l’expérience de loger dans chalet ..

Watch out for Airbnb's new policy!
We’ve been using Airbnb’s services for years during our trips across Europe, mainly in France. We were pretty happy with it, but we’d never needed to contact them (we only booked with Superhosts) before the Covid-19 pandemic hit.
Airbnb introduced a "Force Majeure and Coronavirus (COVID-19) Policy." This policy states (the BOLD is mine) "Bookings for Airbnb stays and experiences made on or before March 14, 2020, with a check-in date between March 14, 2020, and June 15, 2020, may be canceled before the check-in date. As a result, travelers who cancel in accordance with our Policy will receive, at their discretion, a travel credit or a full refund. Hosts can cancel in accordance with our Policy without fees or impact on their Superhost status, and Airbnb will issue a refund or travel credit for an amount including all service fees."
Since we complied with their policy, we were able to get refunds for 4 out of 5 bookings—MINUS the service fees, which they credited back to us with a useless expiration date of December 30, 2020, knowing full well we won’t be able to travel this year. :-(
However... NOWHERE in this policy do they mention that these cancellation terms are tied to the listing’s cancellation policy at the time of booking. They only refer to the "Force Majeure and Coronavirus (COVID-19) Policy." So for the 5th booking, since we only had 48 hours to cancel without fees, they’re "offering" us... $11.23 back on a $349.19 deposit! Of course, we also have the "option" to accept a credit for the full amount... to be used by December 30, 2021 (oh, that’s *so* much better, right?). Except, how is it fair that WE are penalized because not only are we under travel restrictions, but the HOSTS of this booking CAN’T HOST US?
We’ll have to go along with their bad faith (those 2020 expiration dates), and hosts who work with Airbnb should expect to lose customers they might’ve seen again once travel resumes... but they can forget about us—that’s for sure.
