Reflections: Theme for the May 2025 Contest
Here’s the theme for the lovely month of May—no worries, it won’t be lilies of the valley! 😄
This month’s theme is: “Reflection(s)” This leaves a pretty wide scope: reflections in water, of course, but also in windows, on buildings... I’ll leave it to your imagination, but the reflection should be clearly visible.
If this theme has been used before, it doesn’t matter. It’s getting tricky to find new themes that can attract as many participants as possible.
I’m currently in northern Finland and don’t have access to my hard drives, so I’ll add a few photos when I return to France. Here’s just one I took with my smartphone yesterday late afternoon:
Practical details:
Participation: Each VF member can submit up to 3 photos, until Monday, May 26 at 11:59 PM Paris time. Each photo must be posted in a separate message, with its number (1, 2, or 3). Don’t forget to add a little explanation (comment, location, etc.).
Voting: Each VF member can vote for the 3 photos they consider the best, based on their own criteria and the theme.
Voting will take place from Tuesday, May 27 to Saturday, May 31 at 11:59 PM Paris time.
The selected photos will be ranked in order of preference: - 1st photo: 3 points - 2nd: 2 points - 3rd: 1 point
The winner is the author of the photo with the most points.
Results will be published on June 1. In case of a tie, the number of first-place votes will decide. The winner will have the honor of organizing the June 2025 contest.

4x4 Road Trip in Zambia - May 2023 - Solo
Hi there,
I spent 3 weeks there from May 7th to 28th, 2023.
I arrived and departed from the capital, Lusaka.
I rented a 4x4 equipped for camping/overlanding with the only serious option I found at the time from Fair Car Hires. This was to avoid the long approach times from South Africa or Botswana.
4x4: $3,402 for 18 days (😕), a Toyota Hilux Double-Cab Safari Camper—fully equipped, 3.0L diesel, manual transmission, air-con, Bluetooth radio, and 1 or 2 roof-top tents.
I’d already traveled through Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, and KTP, and Harry (the owner of Lukasa in Lusaka) told me Zambia was the "real Africa." I wasn’t disappointed on that front 😉.
I explored three parks: - Lower Zambezi NP (2 nights camping nearby at Mvuu Lodge) - South Luangwa NP (2 nights at Wildlife Camp + 3 nights at Croc Valley Lodge campsite) - Kafue NP (3 nights at Kasabushi Bush Camp + 3 nights at Mapunga Bush Camp) (Check out my route on a map on my personal site).
That’s a lot of kilometers in 3 weeks—just a few well-paved roads in good condition, but mostly rough roads or tracks, which really slows down your average speed 😕.
No supply issues for fuel or food, but watch out for stock in some grocery stores (one Friday afternoon in Chipata, the fruit and vegetable shelves were empty!).
May is still a bit early in the season, so the grass is still tall in the plains.

Recap of 6 weeks in Sumatra April-May 2024
Sumatra at a leisurely pace, from mid-April to the end of May—pure bliss!
Outbound/inbound flight to Kuala Lumpur to reach Medan, then our stops: Medan - Berastaggi - Toba / Ambarita - Ketambe - Pulau Nias / Teluk Dalam - Bukittinggi - Harau Valley - Padang / Rimba.
A journey shaped by the ethnic groups: the Bataks around Berastaggi and Toba, the Ono Niha on Nias Island, and the Minangkabaus starting from Bukittinggi. Christians in the north and Muslims in a matrilineal society at the end of the trip. Rare animals in their natural habitat, orangutans in the canopy and hawksbill turtles within snorkeling distance.
Though Sumatra isn’t a hotspot for Western tourists, it’s incredibly easy to explore Indonesia’s largest island.
Since there were four of us and the journeys are very long (avg. 30 km/h), we opted for taxis between regions and rented scooters on-site; 3 days trekking in the primary forest of Gunung Leuser and guesthouses for accommodation the rest of the time, meals at local warungs.
As I struggled to find info on Nias Island before our trip (thanks to Filemich for reassuring me about this stop), I’ll focus on this destination!
We took an overnight ferry (https://www.wjl-line.com) from Sibolga to Teluk Dalam, in a 4-person cabin, and stayed at Taman Baloho Indah guesthouse, a bit outside the town and by the Indian Ocean—I highly recommend it. You can reach Erwin, the owner (a name from Dutch colonization), via WhatsApp at +62 812 6074 2874. He rents scooters and can also take you fishing if you ask, then you get to enjoy the fish cooked by his wife.
Thanks to our guide Nitra (WhatsApp: +62 822 1383 9300), a young woman passionate about her history, we explored the east coast to visit a megalithic site, then crisscrossed the island’s interior for several days, from village to village, all still very traditional. She lives in Bawomataluo, the most famous of them. She was our gateway to her world, its rituals, and customs. We spent a week on the island—absolute heaven!

After a week of relaxation in the south by the beach, we plan to explore northern Thailand to see the mountains and discover the country’s history before wrapping up in Bangkok.
I’m torn about which region to explore. For convenience, we’ll arrive in Chiang Mai, spend a few days in the area, then head to Lampang, followed by Sukhothai, and finally Bangkok.
After Chiang Mai (1 or 2 days—I’m worried the period might be too crowded and we won’t enjoy it much), we’ll have 3 days and could go to: Mae Hong Son (with a potential return flight); Chiang Dao and Fang; or Nan province, though that seems a bit far for just 3 days. We could also spend only one day in Chiang Mai and have 4 days instead.
For these 3 (or 4) days between Chiang Mai and Lampang, we’d love to do some beautiful hikes, preferably on our own, and see stunning landscapes, nature, and small villages.
Among my options, which would you recommend? Or where can we find great hikes that we can do independently and that aren’t overrun by mass tourism? I’ll admit, I’m struggling to find info—there are lots of small national parks, but details are scarce, and even AllTrails doesn’t have much for some of them...
Just to clarify, we’re considering hiring a car with a driver if needed.

Je ne peux donc plus accéder à mon profil sans leur verser ce qu'ils appellent "une aide", minime certes s'il s'agit d'un seul mois (moins de 4 euros) .... attention l'argument massue arrive : """"pour faire face aux conséquences de covid19"""" (ah bon ?)...
C'est pour moi qui ne conservais mon profil en mode "absent" depuis 2017 que pour témoigner d'une mésaventure traumatisante que j'avais eue en Iran et que j'avais signalée à CS, avec pour réponse de leur part quelque chose comme "on s'en fout"... une surprise désagréable... Ces dernier temps je me disais que j'allais le supprimer car je suis maintenant inscrite sur d'autres sites où ça se passe beaucoup mieux.
Mais voilà qu'ils me demandent "mon aide financière" !!! Pire, exigent mon aide financière" pour pouvoir supprimer mon profil !

j'ai réservé un vol EasyJet - via BDV - Figari Paris CDG pour le 29/05/2020.
En appelant l'aéroport de Figari j'ai appris que - suite Covid19 - tous les vols EasyJet au départ (ou à l'arrivée) de Figari sont annulés en Mai.
BDV dit ne pas avoir reçu d'annulation officielle de EasyJet et considère que ce vol est maintenu - donc refuse de me rembourser si j'annule…

Croisière au départ de Venise le 2 mai 2020 English translation pending
Bonjour,
Croisière réservée auprès d'une agence de voyages depuis plusieurs mois sur le Costa Deliziosa le 2 mai au départ de Venise (Split, Kotor, Katakolon, etc.) dont l'acompte a été réglé lors de la réservation.
Le solde doit être payé le 23 mars donc d'ici quelques jours.
Selon les plan et calendrier de COSTA CROISIERES, cette croisière, au moment où j'écris ce message, n'est pas annulée ni confirmée (voir message du Président de COSTA sur leur site).
Suite aux dernières mesures gouvernementales concernant le coronavirus et au train où vont les événements, les compagnies de croisières seront sans doute encore amenées à revoir et modifier leurs calendriers et plans.
Alors je me pose la question s'il faut payer le solde de cette croisière ou non.
D'autres personnes sont sans doute dans ce cas et qu'en pensent-elles ?

Je prépare un voyage en self drive avec voitures 4x4 et tentes de toit sur Namibie et bostwana, pour mai prochain.
J'ai utilisé beaucoup d'infos sur ce site, merci aux contributeurs.
Je me pose des questions sur la nécessité de réserver les campings a l'avance, ce qui "bloque" un peu l'itinéraire.
J'ai réservé sur sesriem et etosha, mais ailleurs est ce indispensable ? C'est écrit partout que oui pour juillet août, mais est ce le cas aussi en mai ?
Je pense en particulier au parc du Chobe et a l'okavongo au bostwana (Chobe font river, savuti, kwhai, moremi).

Informations à jour le 7 février 2020, date de dépôt de ma demande de visa
Le visa birman peut s'obtenir au Consulate General of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar chercher "Consulate-General of Myanmar" ou "The General Consulate of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar" sur Google Maps adresse complète : Maneenopparat Soi 3, Chang Phueak, Mueang Chiang Mai adresse simplifiée : Maneenopparat Soi 3
Pour s'y rendre à pied, remonter - c'est-à-dire prendre à contresens - l'avenue Manee Nopparat, dépasser KFC et Pizza Hut, puis prendre à droite en direction de l'Icon Park Hotel, et à ce niveau tourner à gauche et marcher jusqu'au consulat
Visa : Application (dépôt) : 9h00 - 12h00 Collection (retrait) : 15h30 - 16h30
Contrairement à Bangkok, pas de formule "visa express" (obtention le jour même ou le lendemain). L'obtention se fait donc sous deux jours ouvrés. Par conséquent, un passeport déposé vendredi matin sera récupéré avec le visa mardi après-midi.
Le papier suivant m'a été remis, listant les pièces à fournir :

Soit : - 2 photos d'identité sur fond blanc - une copie du passeport - le passeport - une copie (imprimée) d'une réservation d'hôtel cf. (1) et (2) - un numéro de téléphone ou une adresse de courriel - une copie (imprimée) d'un billet d'avion ou de bus cf. (1) et (3) - ...et 1600 bahts
(1) : il est possible d'imprimer les réservations à l'Hôtel Icon Park, situé à 150 mètres environ, en leur envoyant les documents en pièces dans un courriel adressé à info@iconparkhotel.com ; les employés sont très agréables et serviables, l'impression est gratuite, n'oubliez pas la boîte à pourboires située sur le comptoir... (2) : face à cette contrainte, j'ai réservé un hôtel au Myanmar sans règlement d'avance et proposant l'annulation gratuite par le biais de Booking, c'est très facile à trouver, et une fois visa en poche ...j'ai annulé ma réservation (3) : j'ai tenté de présenter mon billet d'avion Bangkok-Lyon, mais ça n'a pas fait l'affaire... une réservation de billet de bus (voucher) Mae Sot-Bangkok, non annulable mais obtenue immédiatement via 12Go Asia, a convenu; un aller d'une ville de Thaïlande vers Mae Sot aurait également suffi, selon le préposé qui m'a renseigné.
On vous remet un récépissé avec votre nom et un numéro de dossier, qui permettra le retrait du passeport. Pensez à conserver une copie de votre passeport pour les hôtels, le change, etc.
Donc aucun souci pour l'obtention d'un visa pour le Myanmar à Chiang Mai. Très peu de monde, pratiquement pas d'attente (NB : j'étais présent vendredi à 9h00 pour le dépôt, et le mardi suivant à 15h30 pour le retrait)

Nous partons à 2couples, une semaine début Mai dans la partie sud. Est ce envisageable en camping car ? le stationnement "sauvage" est-il autorisé? l'accès des principaux sites naturels à voir (cascades, glaciers...) est-il possible au niveau qualité des routes et autorisé ?
Avez-vous des références de loueurs sérieux à nous communiquer?
Si nous ne pouvons pas envisager ce transport, faut-il choisir un citadine ou plutôt un 4x' pour ce même programme? loueurs locaux?

Je découvre petit à petit tous les posts liés à la visite du Québec mais j’aurais aimé avoir vos conseils « personnels et privilégiés » sur l’organisation de mes vacances au Québec avec ma belle famille (nous serons 6 adultes venant du sud de la France) du 30 avril au 15 mai 2020.
Nous arrivons à Montréal et nous allons y passer les 3/4 premiers jours histoire de se poser un peu et visiter la ville.
Après, c’est location de voiture et la: tout est ouvert! ;-)
Je me suis malheureusement rendu compte qu’il n’y avait pas de croisières aux baleines sur Tadoussac à cette période et que le Saguenay était encore très froid voire gelé à cette période.
Je suis trop triste car j’aurais tellement aimé qu’on voit ça mais bon on va chercher (et trouver je l’espère) grace à vous un plan B pour que nous puissions organiser nos vacances de rêve au Québec!
Petite precision: nous sommes plutôt branchés ballades, nature, chalets en bois... que villes.
