Cordillère blanche en solitaire (Pérou)? English translation pending
by Guix · 2004-12-19 · 20 replies

Tips for traveling on a budget in Albania?
by Scoulems07 · 2026-06-02 · 8 replies
Hi everyone,

We’re a young couple planning our first trip to Albania from June 23, 2026, to July 2, 2026. We have a pretty tight budget and want to make the most of this amazing country without breaking the bank.

We’re looking for all the advice you can give to help us plan our stay:

* What are the must-see places to visit? * Which cities or villages are really worth the detour? * What natural sites, hikes, canyons, springs, or viewpoints do you recommend? * Do you know of any free, uncrowded, or particularly beautiful beaches? * Where can we responsibly observe or swim with sea turtles? * What are the most beautiful beaches on the Albanian Riviera that are accessible on a small budget? * What budget-friendly accommodations (hotels, hostels, homestays, campgrounds) do you recommend? * What are the best ways to get around between different regions at a low cost? * Do you know of any reliable and affordable agencies for renting a vehicle (car, scooter, or motorcycle)? What are the average rates at the end of June, and which rental companies do you recommend or advise against? * Is it better to rent a vehicle right when we arrive or stick to local buses and minibuses to keep costs down? * Which restaurants or local specialties offer the best value for money? * Are there any free or low-cost activities we shouldn’t miss? * Which places do you think are overrated or can be skipped when you’re short on time and money? * What practical tips would you have wished you knew before your first trip to Albania?

We’d also love any 10-day itineraries that you particularly enjoyed, along with your budget estimates for accommodation, meals, and transportation.

We’re open to off-the-beaten-path spots and local tips. If you have any secret addresses, hidden beaches, favorite accommodations, or mistakes to avoid, we’d love to hear about them! 😊
Crossing the Mercantour: Are there any exposed sections?
by Koa08 · 2026-05-02 · 19 replies
Hi there,

I’m planning to do the Mercantour crossing following the Randoxygène route in mid-July. I’m used to hiking in the mountains, but I sometimes get vertigo, for example on ridges with drops on both sides. I wanted to check if there are any T4 or T3-T4 sections and find out if there are any very exposed passages—and if so, where—so I can plan an alternative route. Can anyone give me some info on this? Thanks!
Nice at the end of April: neighborhoods, villages to visit, and transport passes
by Yosmite · 2026-04-01 · 16 replies
Hi there, Could you recommend some nice and affordable neighborhoods to book a hotel in for visiting Nice and exploring its surroundings and nearby villages?

I’d like to know if it’s better to book the entire stay in Nice and take day trips to the villages, or if there are villages worth spending at least one night in to really explore them properly?

Since all the villages are stunning and we have to make a choice, which ones are absolutely must-visit?

My 16-year-old daughter and I will be spending a week there at the end of April. We’ll arrive by TGV from Paris and plan to use public transport during our stay. Do you know if there’s a weekly transport pass available and how much it costs?

Thanks in advance for your help!
Undecided on 19-day Japan itinerary including Kyoto
by Travel71 · 2026-03-23 · 1 reply
I'm planning a 19-day itinerary in Japan this summer. For a first trip, Kyoto seems like a must. For the rest, I'm torn between: - Matsumoto, Takayama, Kanazawa for 5 to 6 days - Kyoto 4 days - Nara 2 days - Koyasan 1 day - Hakone/Mount Fuji 2 to 3 days - Tokyo 3 days

Or dedicating the first 6 days to Kyushu.

Maybe there’s less traditional Japan in Kyushu compared to the Japanese Alps? Maybe Kyushu is less crowded? Thanks for your thoughts!

Feedback on second Japan trip itinerary
by Patbill · 2026-02-06 · 3 replies
Hi there, Barely back from my trip (autumn 2025) and I already want to go again! I’ve already done a 3-week stay (Tokyo-Kamakura-Nikko-Japanese Alps-Kyoto-Osaka-Koyasan-Nara).

So this time, a different trip: Day 1: departure Day 2: arrive in Osaka (stroll around the center in the afternoon) Day 3: day trip to Minoh Falls + Katsuo-ji Temple Day 4: Universal Studios. 1h20 train in the evening to Okayama Day 5: visit Okayama (Korakuen Gardens and the castle), then a 25-minute train to Kurashiki (evening stroll) Day 6: 45-minute bus to Fukuyama (day trip to Tomo no Ura). 20-minute train in the evening to Onomichi Day 7: electric bike excursion on the Shimanami Kaido (70 km round trip), return to Onomichi in the evening Day 8: stroll around the heights of Onomichi. In the afternoon, 1h20 train to Takehara Day 9: stroll in Takehara. In the afternoon, train to Hiroshima Day 10: day trip to Miyajima Day 11: explore Hiroshima, then train to Kyoto Day 12: Kyoto (Kinkaku-ji and Ryoan-ji area in the morning). Bus to Takao/Togano in the afternoon Day 13: Kyoto (northeast area—Shugakuin Imperial Villa and nearby temples in the morning), relaxed return to Gion in the afternoon via less crowded neighborhoods/temples Day 14: day trip to Uji Day 15: Kyoto (northern Arashiyama area in the morning). Train to Nakatsugawa in the afternoon Day 16: Day 1 of the Nakasendo Trail to Nagiso Day 17: Day 2 to Kiso Fukushima Day 18: Day 3 to Matsumoto (with train from Narai-juku) Day 19: train to Tokyo Day 20: Tokyo (still figuring this out). I’ve seen Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Asakusa. Day 21: return flight Day 22: arrival

Yes, there are a lot of short transports, but that doesn’t bother me.

Any thoughts? Thanks, Patrick
February contest theme: lakes and ponds around the world
by Muriel18 · 2026-02-01 · 75 replies
Let’s stick with the water theme—it’s definitely the season (maybe a bit *too* much for some of those dealing with floods 😕). After the flowing waters (with varying energy levels), let’s take it easy with still waters:

Lakes (Annecy)

Ponds (near Moustiers Saint Marie)

Lagoons (Bacalar)

If you’ve got nice photos of a pond—or even a puddle—why not? Natural bodies of water only: no pools or fountains (reservoir lakes are accepted… because they often look like natural lakes ).

The contest rules are the same as always 😉: Up to 3 photos per member, one photo per post (a little explanation is better), and past winning photos from other VF contests aren’t allowed. You have until Sunday, February 22nd at 11:59 PM (Paris time) to post your photos. Voting starts Monday the 23rd at midnight—rank your top 3 photos in order (3, 2, and 1 points). Voting ends Saturday, February 28th at 11:59 PM. Results will be announced on March 1st. The winning photo is the one with the most points (in case of a tie, the photo ranked first the most times wins). The lucky winner gets to organize March’s contest 😎.

Choosing a lively city with nightlife to live in France
by Vic154 · 2026-01-28 · 8 replies
Hi there, I’m facing a pretty big and important dilemma—I moved to Argentina (Buenos Aires) when I was 20, and now, at 30, I’m coming back to France. I’m looking for a city to live in and build a life for the next several years. I’m a single guy, so that’s the context.

The thing is, I have quite a few strict criteria... First and foremost, I *need* a city that’s bustling with people everywhere—I really don’t like quiet, small countryside towns. Nightlife is super important to me, especially on weekends. It’s crucial that there’s a wide range of options for going out in the evening (mostly bars—I’m not really into nightclubs, but I’d like to be one day if possible). The social aspect is the *most* important thing (honestly, the *only* thing that matters to me). I don’t care at all about living conditions, safety, cleanliness, or whether things work smoothly. But I *do* need a place where people are generally "chill"—not cold, rigid, or overly professional, with social norms that don’t make my head spin. I know I’ll never find the same Latin vibe here in France, haha, but I’m trying to survive anyway.

In France, I’ve always lived in Essonne (91), around Bures-sur-Yvette / Les Ulis / Gif / Orsay, etc. I *hate* it—way too quiet, empty streets, and zero activities that suit me. There’s not a single proper bar in any of the surrounding towns, just PMU tobacco shops, and nightlife is nonexistent.

I went to Hossegor once with friends—great vibe, nightlife, bars, beach, etc. But I’m guessing it’s *super* expensive to buy a place there, close to the action (and I’m not even sure if it’s a nice place to live overall).

When I came back to France, I spent 3 months in Paris because I thought it would obviously be the closest to what I was looking for. I still have horrible memories of it—it haunted me so much that I had to escape the capital in a hurry... And I was (I think?) in one of the best neighborhoods for my tastes: Belleville.

So here I am, going in circles because I don’t know enough about French cities. All my friends love quiet, small provincial towns or even living alone in the mountains.

A couple told me about Montreuil, but they were there a long time ago, so I don’t know what it’s like now. They said there was activity, that the city was pretty big, and that there was a good nightlife scene (bars, nightclubs, all kinds of outings), plus the metro (which would make it easy to get to Paris or for people to come to Montreuil from Paris).

So, for now, Montreuil is my only option, but I’m scared and would love other opinions (on Montreuil and other possibilities).

Sorry for the novel, but this is *really* important to me—my future depends on it, in a way ^^'

Thanks so much for reading and for any help you can give!
Traveling in France off-season: what to prioritize?
by IsaacPellan · 2026-01-08 · 6 replies
Hi everyone,

I’m thinking about planning several short trips in France outside peak tourist seasons, especially in spring and autumn.

The idea would be to prioritize:

- fewer crowds at tourist sites - more affordable accommodation prices - a more local atmosphere

However, I also have some concerns about:

- attractions or restaurants sometimes being closed - more unpredictable weather depending on the region - less frequent transportation in certain areas

For those of you who’ve traveled in France off-season before, what do you think were the main pros and cons? Are there any regions or specific times that are particularly worth prioritizing?

Thanks in advance for your experiences! 😊
Three beautiful weeks during the Japanese autumn
by Patbill · 2026-01-02 · 60 replies
I’m sharing our three-week trip to Japan from late October to mid-November 2025. There were four of us—my partner and a couple of friends. I’ve traveled often with my friend Christian (Bolivia, Argentina, Costa Rica, Namibia, Laos), but this time our partners joined us. The rough itinerary: Arrival in Tokyo. Visiting Shinjuku/Shibuya districts + day trip to Kamakura 5 days in the Japanese Alps, from Matsumoto to Kanazawa (via Kamikochi, Hirayu Onsen, and Takayama) 5 days in Kyoto Nara, Osaka, Koyasan Return to Tokyo (Asakusa district), with a day trip to Nikko We booked our flights well in advance (9 months ahead): the flight cost 1086 € per person. Compared to over 2000 € if we’d booked for the same dates just 3 months prior. For accommodations, we mostly used Booking.com. The onsen was booked via Japanican, and in Kyoto, we stayed in an Airbnb. We also made 5 train reservations a month in advance on Klook or directly on the train’s website.

Day 1: Departure from Brussels (October 24, 2025) Early morning takeoff at 6 AM to Munich (1.5-hour layover) with Lufthansa, then a 12-hour flight with ANA, arriving the next morning at 7 AM at Tokyo Haneda.

Day 2: Arrival in Tokyo Airport formalities were quick. The eSIM we bought before leaving activated as soon as we landed (10 GB plan with Saily—more than enough for our mobile internet needs, mainly Google Maps and Google Translate). We’d received 4 ICOCA cards from our neighbors, which we loaded with 15000 ¥ each. We took the Keihin train, then the Yamanote Line. It’s easy to navigate since everything is in English, and each station is announced on scrolling displays in English too.

We got off the Yamanote Line at the station just after Shinjuku because it’s easier to exit that massive station with our luggage. So we ended up in Shin-Okubo, right in the Korean district. A 10-minute walk took us to Villa Fontaine Hotel. A great hotel, well-located north of the Kabukichō district. The room even seemed bigger than we’d expected.

It was 15°C, but it rained—and kept raining on and off all day. Belgian weather, basically. We went for a walk in Shinjuku Gyoen Park. Not as pretty in the rain, but the big greenhouse was interesting.

Then our first ramen (hearty and for 1000 ¥—pretty much the price of all our ramen during the trip). We headed back to the hotel since check-in was after 3 PM. Shower and relax before going out for dinner. Dinner was barbecue at Shichirin Yakiniku Anan (1700 ¥ each—good and cheap). Ordering via tablet wasn’t easy, but luckily it was in English.

We ended the evening with a stroll through Kabukichō before a well-deserved sleep.

Off-the-beaten-path itinerary for our second trip to Japan
by Artlou31 · 2025-10-19 · 3 replies
Hi there! After a wonderful trip in 2024, we’ll be heading back to Japan at the end of July 2026 to reunite with our daughter, who will have been there for a few months.

Last time, we did a route: Tokyo – Japanese Alps – Kyoto – Osaka – Hiroshima. This time, we’ll have 10 days to ourselves before our daughter joins us for a full week. We’re thinking of spending 2 days in Tokyo and 1 day at the end of the trip for shopping.

We’re looking for ideas for a route (by train and bus) that’s a little off the beaten path, especially avoiding the most touristy spots like the best-known temples in Kyoto. Our favorite spots in 2024: Kanazawa, Takayama, and Miyajima Island. We love temples, gardens, and would love to explore the nature, which looks incredible.

Thanks in advance for your tips and suggestions!

Cycling in Liguria from Nice
by Rikimiki · 2025-05-09 · 6 replies
Who among you has explored northern Italy along the Mediterranean, in Liguria? I’m dreaming of cycling there from Nice, crossing through villages like Menton, Ventimiglia, Dolceacqua, Apricale, Monte Ceppo, Triora, Ponte di Nava, Ormea, Garessio, Ceva, Mondovì, and Cuneo.

Beyond that, it’s the route toward Queyras in France via the Col dell’Agnello, on the slopes of Monte Viso.

A few questions for those who know the area: Is it interesting by bike? Is the road surface decent? Is car traffic low, or at least manageable?

We had this plan back in 2009 as part of a Nice-Rome crossing, but we ended up doing it differently. I might get to revisit it this summer (solo this time, not on a tandem like we usually do).

Looking forward to your thoughts and comments!
Past trips, future travels
by Mansatoure34 · 2025-03-23 · 6 replies
My passion for travel Travel is an endless source of wonder and discovery for me. It lets me escape the everyday and immerse myself in different cultures, varied landscapes, and unique ways of life. Every destination is an invitation to learn and grow, while fueling an insatiable curiosity.

The types of trips I love I’m especially drawn to trips that combine adventure and cultural immersion. I love discovering places off the beaten path, where authenticity takes precedence over mass tourism. Whether it’s trekking through isolated mountains, exploring historic cities, or staying in remote villages, every trip is a chance to step out of my comfort zone and embrace the world’s diversity.

I also prioritize trips that let me deepen my knowledge in a particular area, like gastronomy, history, or art. Exchanges with locals—whether sharing a meal or taking part in traditional events—are essential to making the experience rich and meaningful.

Trips I’ve taken Among the memorable trips I’ve done, some have been turning points in how I see the world. My journey through the Austrian Alps, for example, didn’t just offer spectacular landscapes—it also let me discover Austrian culture in all its diversity, from festivals to music to cuisine.

I’ve also had the chance to visit more exotic destinations, like Southeast Asia, where I immersed myself in fascinating cultures, learned ancient practices, and met people whose life philosophies really inspired me.

Future travels Looking ahead, I dream of going to Latin America to explore its vibrant cultures and breathtaking landscapes. A road trip through Peru, Bolivia, and Chile is one of my long-term travel goals. I’d also love to discover the Pacific Islands and maybe even take part in volunteer projects with local communities.

I hope my future travels will keep pushing my limits while letting me meet people who share this passion for travel and connection.
