English translation pending
by Cath1000 · 2005-02-22 · 4 replies
Bonjour,

Me déconseillez-vous d'y aller ?

BE CAREFUL

ET ARRETONS DE DIRE QUE LA BIRMANIE C'EST SAFE !!

Risques sérieux à Mindanao (Philippines)? English translation pending
by Lemmy · 2004-09-16 · 5 replies

Back in Tunisia (live account)
by Sinforosa · 2026-04-11 · 57 replies
Hi there,

On this forum, I shared my first trip to Tunisia from mid-February to early March (
https://voyageforum.com/forum/impressions-tunisiennes-en-direct-d11460662/), a stay I enjoyed so much that six weeks later, I’m back in Tunisia for a full 15 days (I return on April 27).

This time, I landed in Monastir on a direct flight from Nice, again with Tunisair. We left about ten minutes late, and the flight lasted around 1 hour 30 minutes. A meal was served on board (cucumber salad with Edam-like cheese, carrots, and two small portions of dishes I couldn’t identify—semolina with peppers, olives, and parsley, two small rolls, a square of processed cheese, and a chocolate cake). It’s worth noting because it’s not common on flights this short.

In February, France and Tunisia were in the same time zone, but now Tunisia is one hour behind. This time difference and the flight duration work perfectly for a short 15-day trip since it takes me a few days to adjust to jet lag.

Luckily, I’d asked my hotel about the taxi fare from the airport because the drivers (there were several around me) didn’t hesitate to quote outrageous prices. The actual fare is 20 dinars, but one asked for 120 dinars. I refused, and another offered 60 dinars. I replied, "That’s too expensive—I’ll take the metro!" (Having tried the Tunis metro, I had no desire to repeat the experience in Monastir with a suitcase!). I started walking toward the metro, and one of the drivers caught up with me, saying, "20 dinars is fine!" I’ll skip the details, but the negotiation took a little while. When I arrived at the hotel, I told the receptionist someone had asked for 120 dinars. He put his hands to his head and said, "They’re awful!" He remembered our phone call two days earlier when I’d booked (he’s the one who told me I could take the metro).

The Mezri Hotel isn’t expensive. I got a sea-view room for 75 dinars (22 €). (I’d booked a balcony room for 90 dinars but wouldn’t have had time to enjoy it.) It’s well-located but noisy because there’s no double glazing. The receptionist is a very kind older gentleman. He called a friend whose wife is from Tozeur to find out if I should take a bus or a *louage* tomorrow and what time.

I arrived at the hotel around 7:00 PM and had time to stroll along the corniche to the ribat. Despite some run-down buildings, the seaside seemed livelier and cheerier than Sousse’s.

Monastir is the hometown of former president Bourguiba. I passed his mausoleum by taxi. There are Tunisian flags along the avenue by the sea because every year on April 6—the anniversary of Habib Bourguiba’s death—the president of the Republic visits the Bourguiba Mausoleum in Monastir to pay respects.

The taxi driver mentioned other Tunisian presidents. He complained about rising prices and insecurity, blaming President Kaïs Saïed (I’d already heard that security was better under Ben Ali).

At the end of my stay, I’ll take time to explore Monastir, but tomorrow morning, I’m off to Tozeur—a long bus ride awaits me.

Can't see domestic flights on the Cabo Verde Airlines website
by ThierryBe · 2026-03-30 · 10 replies
Hi there,

I can't seem to find flights between the Cape Verde islands on the airline's website. No matter the date or route, I always get the same response: "no flights on this date." See the photo. Would anyone have an explanation? Surely not all flights are fully booked in July?

Best, Thierry
Too much info: which quiet island to choose in Thailand for beach time and snorkeling?
by Saramaca · 2026-01-09 · 3 replies
Hi there, We're heading to Thailand with our two kids (9 years old) for two weeks next February (2026). We plan to rent a car to stay independent and explore a bit off the beaten path. Still, we'd like to spend 1 or 2 nights on a nice, quiet island—just for some relaxation and especially snorkeling (even though I know it's not the best country for beautiful corals).

I've read dozens of forum pages and travel journals, but I'm still overwhelmed and can't decide where to go for a peaceful paradise-like beach with good snorkeling opportunities. We don’t need comfort—Robinson Crusoe-style camping or hammock nights work perfectly for us. No electricity or signal is totally fine. We just don’t want to pay 1000 € for a family of four to go to the Surin Islands, even if they do look like paradise.

Any suggestions?
Are Puerto Viejo and Bri Bri tourist traps?
by Sourireagir · 2025-11-06 · 20 replies
Hi everyone, I’m so happy 🙂 to be traveling again after 5 years without a trip. I’m heading back to Costa Rica for 18 days from December 12th to 30th with a friend. We’re doing San José-Sarapiquí (2 nights), then Sarapiquí-Tortuguero (3 nights), then from Tortuguero heading to the Cahuita and Puerto Viejo area. We’ll spend about ten days in that region, then make a 2-day stop somewhere before flying back out of San José. From what I’ve read on this blog, Puerto Viejo seems like the "rasta," party-friendly spot, which is honestly the kind of place I tend to avoid—too touristy. I’m looking for places surrounded by beautiful nature. I’ve already spent several weeks in Drake Bay (in 2019 and 10 years before that) and loved it. My friend also wants to visit the Bri Bri. Could you recommend some authentic spots in this southern Caribbean area? Your favorite places—whether it’s sights to see, accommodations, or even your favorite little restaurants 😛? What’s the most authentic way to visit the Bri Bri? What’s your take on that? And finally, what beautiful stop would you recommend before heading back to San José? A huge thank you to everyone! Have a great day, Zineb
Recommendations for Solo Mom Traveling with a 3-Year-Old for a Month in Malaysia
by MarieMaëlle · 2025-10-28 · 5 replies
Good evening everyone,

I’m leaving for Malaysia very soon with my 3-year-old daughter—this will be her first big trip! As a former backpacker, I’m finally taking my little one to discover Asia, starting with Malaysia 😊 We’re traveling from December 7th to January 5th, and I’d like to split our stay into 5 must-see spots where we can settle in comfortably for about 5 days each. Given that we’ll definitely spend a few days near Kuala Lumpur upon arrival, that I *must* take her to Malaysian Borneo to see the orangutans, and that I’d also love to relax with her on some beautiful beaches in the east ☀️

Do you have any recommendations or must-see tips?

Are there any cool guesthouses in Kuala Lumpur or nearby where we might meet other families?

Are there places that are especially great for kids—or, on the contrary, places to avoid?

Are there other solo-parent families traveling in the area around the same time as us?

Thanks so much for your kind and alternative suggestions 🤗
Solo backpacking trip to Benin

Hi everyone, thanks for your advice! I’m starting a new thread because it seems my first one about Senegal was deleted—or maybe it’s just my computer acting up again 😉. Anyway, I’ve decided to go to Benin instead. I’ll be there from January 5th to February 2nd—why count the days when you love traveling😄? I’d love all your tips on accommodations, restaurants, and itineraries. I’m basically starting from scratch to plan my trip.

Feedback on 3-week South Africa itinerary
by Cocsvoyage · 2025-05-19 · 4 replies
Hello everyone! We’re heading to South Africa this summer (August 11 to September 1) and I’m finalizing our itinerary. I’d love to get your thoughts on our route and specifically on two points: - The time spent at each stop: does any seem too short or too long? - The domestic flights: do you think they’re a good choice? (Flight from Kruger to Durban + Durban to Port Elizabeth) We’ll rent a car each time we land. Or is it better to do the whole trip by car? Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to take a look! Have a great day! !
Madeira Between Lockdowns - July-August 2021
by Ellobo · 2025-05-11 · 10 replies
Hi there, I'm starting a new travel journal with my itinerary and memories in mind, and maybe a few photos if I can find some.

The context:

April 2020, I was supposed to go to Uzbekistan, and October 2020 to Texas: both canceled due to COVID. Summer vacations in 2020 weren’t gonna be fun. Optimistic, I’d rescheduled both trips for roughly the same dates in 2021: the first was canceled again because of COVID, the second due to U.S. entry conditions (still COVID-related!). Summer vacations in 2021 *had* to be more fun, or I was gonna lose it!!! Plus, our parents are dealing with health issues, which is weighing us down—we really need to get away!

So I looked into where we could go, somewhere we could live almost normally. I saw that Madeira had implemented strict COVID measures but that life on the island was pretty chill afterward. For me, Madeira = sun + hiking + landscapes. BINGO.

Day 1: The flight and arrival on the island

Flight with TAP via Lisbon, departing around noon. We wore our masks properly on the plane. (My last flight was to Portugal, and I told myself I’d break the jinx and leave COVID behind us.) Layover in Lisbon, then an afternoon flight to Madeira. The landing went smoothly, no wind. Cristiano Ronaldo Airport in Funchal is known for being one of the trickiest in the world due to crosswinds. The checks were standard, except COVID added an extra step. Before the trip, I had to fill out a questionnaire (Madeira Safe). Once there, a group of young people—probably students—greeted us, each with a tablet. The health questionnaire and vaccine check were super quick. Then we saw a doctor, and just like that, we were wished a great stay. Honestly, it was so well organized that it only took 10 minutes. We wouldn’t put our masks back on until we returned!

A taxi took us to our hotel in the hills above Funchal—a pretty upscale place, which isn’t our usual style, but we needed it this time! Dinner on the hotel terrace with the city at our feet. Amazing!

HOTEL: Quinta da Bela Vista

The +: We’re traveling!!! The -: Nothing.
What's the path from Sekong Lake to Naurikot?
by Ellememe23 · 2025-02-05 · 3 replies
Hi there, we're heading to Nepal in a few weeks and planning a relaxed trek from Jomsom to Tatopani along the left bank of the Kali Gandaki. Starting from Kokhetanti, we'd like to do a day loop to Sekong Lake, then head to Naurikot and return (possibly by road). We’ve found—well, *found* might be a strong word—a path to the lake, but we can’t see any route continuing to Naurikot. Can anyone help us out? Thanks so much! !
