Currency Exchange

Since most countries are in the eurozone, the euro is the currency to prioritise. Otherwise, for those outside the eurozone or for countries not using the euro, banks and exchange bureaus readily accept major currencies. ATMs are also widely available.

Payment Methods

You can pay in cash or by card (with no fees for euro accounts if the country uses the euro), as in France. For cash, note that 500 € bills are often refused by merchants in many countries, as are 100 € and 200 € bills at times.

Budget

Western Europe isn’t necessarily the most budget-friendly place to travel. However, by opting for camping, youth hostels, or private accommodations when possible, along with picnics, self-cooking, or snacks for meals, you can significantly reduce costs. Having your own vehicle can also be cost-effective if travelling in a group, though there are plenty of promotional offers for other transport options. In short, travelling in Europe on a budget of 60 to 80 € per day per person (for two) is feasible and allows for a good deal of freedom.

What can be expensive:

  • (Very) touristy spots in high season.

What doesn’t have to be expensive:
