My husband and I returned on Jan. 25th from a one-week stay at the Viva Tangerine.
Although the resort compound was beautifully laid out and the staff was very hospitable and accommodating, this resort has a MAJOR sewage problem.
The problem hit us in the face on our first day. Our assigned room was located about 20 feet from a huge, slimy, smelly cesspool on the neighboring lot of an abandoned resort. It was 10 p.m. and we didn’t yet see what the cause of the smell was but the stench was so thick that we refused to even go into the room and immediately went back to the front desk to request another room. Our new room was located in the main dining/bar/disco complex. The room was directly above the kitchen and was very noisy from 4:30 a.m., when the cooks began cooking, to 2:00 a.m., once the disco quieted down.
This resort has sewage leaking and overflowing the saturated grounds throughout the entire complex, which smells terrible! The lawn between the main dining complex, snack bar, pool and main walking path has become a mucky, stinky gray water puddle. It is “covered-up” by a blue tarp covered “stage”. We watched the muck grow daily, even though we only had a couple of hours of rain on Wednesday, which then extremely overflowed throughout the area, down the stairs and onto the beach. One night, they actually used this “stage” for beach sports awards. Guests were bypassing their placed steps and stepping 4” deep into the muck. As the crowd “ewed!” the workers wiped it with beach towels, never stopping to wash their hands before shaking the hands and dancing with guests.
My husband and I became violently sick on Thursday night. We had to get meds from the resort Dr. and were laid up in bed until packing time on Saturday morning. We met up with many guests while venturing out to the Dr.'s or stopping in the dining hall for soup and were surprised to hear that many guests-from different countries or fights, over 20 that we spoke to within an hours time, were also sick Thursday night. We found on our bus ride from the resort to the airport, that all but a few children had been sick the same night. We're not sure what caused it but having gray sewage water at our feet might have been the source.
The resort itself is very nicely laid out and is kept clean. Crews raked the beach daily - which was dumped down the beach. The floors were constantly being mopped and always looked
nice. There is a fountain along the walkway from the main entrance which would have been
nice had it not been filled with algae. I'm not sure why that was ignored. The employees were very friendly and accommodating.
