Hi there, I need your thoughts on the rest of my itinerary. We’re spending two nights in Phnom Penh and five in Siem Reap. That leaves us with six days, and we’d like to do Kampot-Kep and Koh Rong Sanloem. Originally, I wanted to go to Battambang, but I’m worried it might be too much. Our flight back is on 22/03 at 6:30 PM from Phnom Penh. Thanks in advance for your feedback and tips!

Hi there,

Two nights in Phnom Penh is too few—adding at least one more would be better.

No, Kampot and Kep aren’t twin cities you can visit in one go. They’re quite distinct, and trying to see both *plus* Koh Rong in such a short time would be unreasonable and turn that part of your trip into a marathon. To fix this, I’d drop Kep from the plan since it’s the farthest from Koh Rong... and also because, in my opinion, Kampot is way nicer, more interesting, and less touristy.

A fourth stop in six days? Phew, that was a close one...

Thanks for your feedback! But where should I go directly after leaving Siem Reap? One night in Kampot then Koh Rong Samloem?

Staying in Kampot for just one night wouldn’t be worth it—it deserves at least 3 (without Kep). Since Giant Ibis Transport offers an overnight sleeper bus to Kampot from Siem Reap, why not take it on the evening of your last day there? That way, you’d "gain" a night.

Three days in Kampot (with a day trip to Kep) and three days on Koh Rong Sanloem seems like a good plan to me. As Songsam mentioned, you can take an overnight bus with Giant Ibis, Larryta, or Virak Buntham from SR to Kampot (and SR to Sihanoukville if you start with KRS). That way, you avoid wasting a day on the road while saving on a night’s accommodation. Kampot is quite touristy—it’s the country’s third most popular destination after SR and PP—but Koh Rong Sanloem will be much quieter. The road between Kampot and Sihanoukville is in rough shape, so if you want to avoid two hours of potholes, you can take the train, which stops in Kampot at 10:40 AM if it’s on time.
