Hello, We’re going on a cruise on the Renaissance With CFC Cruises from August 5 to 16, 2025. We have a stopover in Lisbon, and I’d like some info on transportation for visiting the Alfama and Belém neighborhoods. Can we buy single transport tickets? Are there any other travelers doing this cruise? Thanks for your help

Hi sassy30, we’ll be on this cruise too. Like you, I’m looking for info on how to do the excursions and sightseeing on our own to avoid the ship’s tours—they’re often really expensive.

Hi there, The ship docks in the city, and you can explore everything without taking the excursions. Go to the train station and head to the basement to buy a daily ticket for public transport from the machine. With this ticket, you can take both buses and trams unlimited times for 24 hours. Belém is easy to reach by bus or tram: https://fr.doctorizzy.com/ocio/Como-ir-de-Lisboa-a-Belem

You also have the hop-on-hop-off tourist buses, like in any big city.

Lisbon is a gorgeous city with so much to see, but it’s not always easy on foot. The city is very hilly, and you’ll encounter lots of stairs and steep roads to tackle. https://alleralisbonne.com/lisbonne-a-pied/

Hi, In 2022, we took bus 728 right in front of the cruise terminal, and it took about 20 minutes to get to Belém station (Mosteiro dos Jerónimos). I think Alfama is within walking distance from the cruise terminal. Happy travels! Mum49

Hi Sassy 30 Andy 571 gives you all the details about Lisbon—I’ll give you the bus numbers, since we know Lisbon really well (cheap taxis too) Daily pass for metro, buses, and trams: unlimited travel for 24 hours from the time of purchase. For buses stopping at Santa Apolónia, here are the destinations: 206, 210, 706, 782: follow the Tagus River to Cais do Sodré, serve Praça do Comércio, the market, and the Cais do Sodré ferry terminal. 712: goes to Alcântara via the city center, passes Marquês de Pombal Square—great for reaching downtown. 728: goes to the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém along the Tagus. 759 and 794: head up the Tagus to Oriente (Oceanarium), pass the Azulejo Museum. In the other direction, they serve Praça do Comércio. 781: serves Praça do Comércio. Another popular line for tourists is line 15, which runs from downtown to Belém, where you can visit Belém Tower and the Jerónimos Monastery. It’s a modern tram line with no queues. You can also take it to Cais do Sodré, where trains to Estoril depart, as well as ferries to Cacilhas, and where the market is located.

The Cais do Sodré Market consists of several modern halls where the actual market takes place. Its unique feature is that one hall is entirely dedicated to dining, with around forty stalls, each offering its own specialty. You can buy dishes from different stalls and enjoy them at the large, friendly communal tables in the center of the hall. The most popular destination for tourists on the other side of the Tagus is Cacilhas, where bus 101 departs for Cristo Rei. From the cruise terminal, you can reach it via bus 728 or the metro at Oriente station.
