Hi there, in April 2025 we’re heading out from southern France to Mongolia in our 4x4 Land Cruiser. We’d like to cross from Kazakhstan into China in early September and spend two weeks driving through Xinjiang (no visa required). We’re looking for other vehicles to join us and split the cost of the mandatory guide in China. Any takers?

Hi, your post deserves some thought. I’d happily go back in a 4x4, but do you know the age limit for drivers in China? Cheers, Guy

Hi Guy, according to the (Chinese) agency I contacted, drivers over 70 have to take an exam (medical?) to drive in China. "to drive a car, the age shall be over 18 years old, but if the applicant is over 70, it is required to pass an examination before obtaining a license." Do you want me to look into getting more precise details?

Hello, Does this mean you first have to pass an exam (which one and where?) to then get a license (and under what conditions?) For info, I still have a Chinese driver’s license from 2010–2012, but I think it’s no longer valid. Just so you know, driving in the countryside with a good GPS isn’t any harder than elsewhere; on the other hand, in Beijing without readable signs (for me), it takes on a whole new dimension ……. Looking forward to hearing from you. Best, Guy
