Crowds in Crete mid-August to early September

Hi everyone, We’re thinking of spending 3 weeks in Crete between mid-August and early September, renting a car, quickly exploring a few spots in the east, and focusing on the west, southwest, and south. I’m worried about the heavy tourist crowds. Is it really more noticeable than elsewhere in Greece? Is there a way to avoid the crowds without missing out on the iconic places, which I imagine are stunning in Crete? Thanks for your thoughts and experiences!

Hi Nathalie,

Unfortunately, tourism is what it is, so there are crowds, especially in August. But tourism is an essential economic resource for Greece.

This year, though, with the war, fuel prices, and prices in general, there might be fewer people. To escape mass tourism, avoid beachfront hotels and trendy spots, etc. But you won’t escape tourists when visiting Knossos or museums, for example. There are plenty of beaches where you can find peace and quiet with no one around. For the rest, rent a car and explore the remote areas in the mountains, etc.

Have a great holiday!

Hi Elenitsa,

Thanks so much for your message and all the info. I’ve traveled in Greece for several years now—love it! Both mainland Greece and the Cyclades, and I’ve always managed to find a mix of really busy spots and quieter ones. But I get the feeling Crete is a whole other level when it comes to crowds... I’ll have to think about it since I can’t adjust my vacation dates, unfortunately!

Oh well, if you managed to avoid the crowds in the Cyclades, Crete will be a breeze for you! :-) Crete is much bigger than the Cyclades islands, so no problem finding quiet spots, even in August.
