Renting a 4x4 with Roof-Top Tent from Africa Camper

Hi there, We’re planning a trip to Namibia in the summer of 2026 and want to rent a 4x4 with a roof-top tent. After reading a lot of posts on the topic, I’m still not sure which rental companies are truly reliable these days... We found a vehicle at a reasonable price from Africa Camper, but the online reviews are mixed. Has anyone had a good or bad experience with this company? Thanks so much! Martine

Hi there, We rented a Hilux with a bushcamper-style habitation cell from Africamper in May 2023. The vehicle had 100,000 km on the clock and was perfectly maintained. We didn’t run into any issues during the 5,000 km we covered in one month across Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa. The same can’t be said for the habitation cell, which was really worn out. We picked up the Hilux in Windhoek and dropped it off in Jo’burg. Reliable rental companies include Asco, Bushlore, and Savanna, but they’re more expensive than Africamper.

Hello, Thank you for your feedback! We’ll still ask for a few more quotes before making our decision. Best regards, Martine

Hi Helix, check out the blog: msiafricaroadtrip.com you should find what you're looking for.

For the purpose of this type of camper van, it depends on what you're planning to do. See you soon!

We rented a Hilux with a rooftop tent from AfriCamper (this might not be the same company as Africa Camper). We departed from Johannesburg and returned to Johannesburg, crossing the Kalahari. The vehicle had around 40,000 km on it and was in great condition. Apart from a few flat tires—often unavoidable—and some really rough tracks, the vehicle didn’t falter. A solid company in my book. Oh, and this was back in 2020! !

Thanks Christian for your feedback on Africamper (you're right, it's not Africa Camper). Their rates are lower, and we’ll probably book our vehicle with them... Best, Martine
