What to do on Easter Sunday in Greece?

Hello. We’re heading to Greece from April 19th to May 1st. We were planning to spend 3 days visiting Athens, then exploring the Peloponnese (Mycenae-Epidaurus, Mistra, Lousios Gorge, Olympia, Patras) + Delphi (or the other way around, starting with Delphi—doesn’t matter).

Except I just realized that April 20th is Easter Sunday: no visits to sites/museums in Athens that day... (nor on Saturday late afternoon, as I’d imagined). But Delphi, Mycenae, etc., will likely be closed too (maybe even on Monday the 21st!).

What do you recommend we visit or do? Our trip is mainly focused on archaeological visits (my kids have been looking forward to Athens/Greece for years!).

Thanks in advance! Have a great evening

Hi there,

Here are the opening hours for sites and museums during the Easter weekend: Good Friday: open from 12 PM to 5 PM Easter Saturday: 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM Easter Sunday: closed Easter Monday: normal hours.

If you arrive on Saturday the 19th, you can stroll around Athens, which will be pretty empty since many Athenians leave for this long weekend. On Saturday night at midnight, there’ll be fireworks and firecrackers everywhere. On Sunday, you can wander through the streets of Monastiraki, watch the changing of the guard, and visit the National Gardens. On Monday, visit the Acropolis or head straight to the Peloponnese and save the Acropolis for later.

Patras isn’t worth stopping at—no need to detour there. Your itinerary might be a bit long. That’s quite a few kilometers and hours on the road.

Have a great trip!

Hi there, Thanks for your reply and all these great tips!

Do you think it’s a bit too long? We intentionally left out Meteora and Monemvasia + the Mani region to avoid overloading the trip... What would your advice be? Thanks in advance! Have a great day

If I were you, I’d skip Olympia and Patras. There’s not much left in Olympia, and Patras isn’t interesting, as I mentioned in my previous post.

Maybe even focus just on the Peloponnese and skip Delphi. That way, you can visit Monemvasia and explore the Mani region a bit. Basically, stick to the eastern Peloponnese + Athens—it’s already a great plan!

Thanks for these tips. Actually, we really want to visit Delphi AND a bit of the center of the Peloponnese (the Lousios Gorge in particular since we love hiking, so that’ll make a nice break between the "historical/sightseeing" days). So, in the end, it’s not much longer to go via Olympia (and just the word makes the kids dream, so...). But the plan is to do the Delphi/Olympia trip + visit Olympia in the same day and then head early the next morning to Stemnitsa, where we’ll stay for 2–3 days (2 nights). We’ll see how it goes! Accommodations booked...

Hi there

Delphi/Olympia is still a 3.5 to 4-hour mountain drive. There’s no highway—it’s a single-lane road each way. It’s *really* long with kids. You’d need to leave Delphi super early to arrive in Olympia by midday and have time to visit. You should also plan for about 2 hours to explore the site.

Good luck! Elenitsa
