Hello, We’ve just returned from our cruise on the Smeralda. There were four of us in balcony cabin 17001—a nice cabin with a large balcony and a very practical bathroom, though storage was a bit tight for four (small wardrobe and small shelf). Our assigned restaurant, El Meneghino, served good and hearty meals. The buffet was fine—since it’s a large ship, we always found free tables at different times, whether for breakfast or lunch. The food was good but not very varied. Be sure to check the daily program for meal times, as they change every day with different options: either buffet, fixed-menu restaurant, or both. The pools and jacuzzis were very small and crowded, and despite the nice weather that week, we never saw the aquapark open. There are plenty of bars where you can easily find a spot to enjoy a drink in peace or with music. The theater was very small and had unusual hours. Over the week, we only managed to see two shows live—the rest were on TV in the cabin. We did two Costa excursions: one in Rome with the express train, which was very pleasant, and the other in Pisa, which was well-organized for independent exploration. Overall, we were quite satisfied with our trip, but we still prefer MSC. Have a nice Sunday.

It seems the return boat was delayed in Savona due to a sick passenger disembarking in La Spezia—lots of people missed their train when they finally got off in Savona...

Hi,

Yes, a crew member was evacuated, and we only arrived in Savona around 11 AM. We thought they’d taken a COVID-19 test because we left with over 4 hours’ delay, so we figured they were waiting for the result, which was probably negative since we did set off again. But that’s just a guess—no one on board is saying anything, and I have to admit the atmosphere is a little weird. By the way, in Savona, a passenger had a collapse, likely cardiac, because they got CPR on Deck 6 and were also evacuated. We don’t know any more than that. I really hope it wasn’t too serious for them and that they’ll be okay. This ship hasn’t had much luck lately—it’s been one thing after another!!!!!

Hi there, Did the stops go as planned, despite the coronavirus??? Thanks for your review! Why do you prefer MSC???

Hello,

No problem with the layovers since we weren’t in Lombardy or Veneto. We prefer MSC for the more varied food choices and friendlier staff, especially for the cabins. On this cruise, the cabin steward came by once, and every time it was around 3 or 4 PM—just when we wanted to rest. We didn’t dare ask him to come back later for fear he wouldn’t return, and he only dropped off the daily program around 9:30 PM. Our teens were really disappointed that the theater, jacuzzis, pools, and aquapark were closed. But that’s just our personal opinion, since everyone has different expectations for their cruises. We’re comparing this to the last ships we’ve been on: MSC Splendida, Meraviglia, and Bellissima.

Hello Thanks for your reply. I’m boarding this ship at the end of March, and I hope there won’t be any issues with the stops in Italy...

Hi there,

I’m taking this ship at the end of March

It looks like Costa has canceled all its Mediterranean cruises until April 3.

Hello, Thank you for sharing your feedback and impressions. Do you have any photos of the cabin and your balcony, please? We’ve booked the same cabin! :) Thanks! Best regards

Hello, How did the COSTA excursion with the Express train go? Did you have transportation from the ship to the station? What time was the train for the outbound and return trips? San Pietro station? Thanks for any details you can share. Best regards, Lysie
