Hi there,

We’ll be driving the route from Hluhluwe Imfolozi to Didima Camp in the Drakensberg this September.

Our GPS app suggests a few different routes:

Either along the coast to Durban, then heading back up via Pietermaritzburg. Or further inland through Dundee.

Which route would you recommend in terms of road quality and safety?

Thanks so much in advance for your tips!

Hi Karine,

If you have a bit of time, you can go through Nongoma, Vryheid, Dundee, Ladysmith, and then Bergville to reach RNNP in the Drakensberg. This way, you can take a quick look at the famous Anglo-Zulu War Battlefields, mainly Rorke's Drift but especially Isandhlwana, which is a beautiful and moving site. Plus, it was the stage for the first battle where the English had to set aside their colonial arrogance—just for that alone!!!!! Vryheid can be a base for these visits (there’s a B&B run by a very friendly French woman who knows the region perfectly). The roads and tracks crossing the Zulu countryside are in pretty good condition, despite a few potholes and many villages. They’re not much longer in kilometers than the routes suggested by our friend Michel, not counting the visits, of course! If you're in a hurry, stick with Michel’s advice.

Best regards, Jacky.

Hi Jacky,

Thanks for the info.

Unfortunately, we won’t have time to do the visits since we’ve already booked our accommodations and we’ll be sleeping at Didima in the evening.

I’ve no doubt that the AFS is packed with amazing sites, and it’s always a bit frustrating to have to choose!

Thanks again and have a great evening.

And in this area, you can pay your respects at the monument dedicated to the son of Napoleon III!

Hi Jacky,

Just out of curiosity, how much time should I allow for the trip between Hluluwe and Didima Camp via Vryheid, Dundee, and Ladysmith—but without stopping for any visits?

The GPS keeps giving me wildly different and pretty unrealistic travel times!

Thanks in advance, and have a great day!

Hi Karine,

From Imfolozi/Hluhluwe GR to reach Vryheid, you need to exit at Nyalazi Gate, near the R618 that crosses the reserve coming from Mtubatuba and heading to Nongoma. We spent a lot of time in this area, but roughly 1 hour/1 hour 15 minutes to get to Nongoma, 1 hour 30 minutes to Vryheid, another 1 hour/1 hour 15 minutes to Dundee, and 45 minutes to 1 hour to reach Ladysmith, where you’ll still have about a hundred kilometers left to get to RNNP—so no less than 6 hours for the trip. The three major sites (Blood River, Rorke's Drift, and Isandlwana) are off the main road (20/30 km each time). Of course, you also need to factor in the time to exit the park, which can be long depending on your accommodation and any wildlife encounters along the way (this sanctuary is very rich in wildlife).

There’s a route I only know partially that seems shorter if you leave the reserve via the southwest (Cengeni Gate), then head to Ulundi, Melmoth, and Dundee via the R66. It all depends on where you’re staying. This option is quite similar to the one Michel isn’t taking. That said, this area has many villages with sometimes congested surroundings and a few poorly maintained dirt roads.

These two routes are only worth it if you decide to explore the country’s recent history; otherwise, stick with Michel’s suggestion.

In this region, it’s not easy to find fuel before Vryheid, so make sure to fill up in the park.

Best regards, Jacky.

Thanks Jacky, I’ll follow Michel’s route then, even though I’m having some trouble programming the trip on the GPS app!

The GPS keeps insisting I go through Kwadukuza, but I’m really trying to avoid towns!

Thanks again and have a good evening.

Michel,

Even if we take the R74 near Kwadukuza?

Is crossing through small towns generally safe, or are there any security concerns?

Thanks, and have a good evening

Hi, Thanks for all the really interesting info in your posts. About the two links in this message, I didn’t quite get it because the routes seem identical. Could you tell me more about them? Thanks
MI Michel85200 Globetrotter ·
Hi there, It depends on which exit you take from Hluhluwe. If you leave via the middle gate: Two options: Join the N2 via Mtubatuba, then take the N2 and N3 via Durban. It’s the "highway" route. Safe, except for speed and speed cameras. Or, for something more adventurous: Mtubatuba N2 to KwaDukuza Greytown Mooiriver I’ve done both routes.

If you exit to the south of Hluhluwe: Ulundi Vryheid Dundee Winterton Crossing through Zulu country.

From the south: Ulundi Nqutu (monument in honour of the Prince Imperial) Dundee We’re in the heart of the countryside

You're welcome! But once you're back, could you let me know which route you took so I can confirm its condition? Thanks
