I’m looking for info on villages around Aix, like Fuveau, Bouc-Bel-Air, or even Éguilles and Venelles?
We’re a couple with a child living in the Paris region, and I’ll be relocating to Aix-en-Provence in spring 2026. We’d love to swap our apartment for a house with a pool within 20-30 minutes max of central Aix, with a budget of around 650k €.
In terms of climate and geography, I’ve read that Aix is in a basin where it can get really hot. What about the surrounding villages that are a bit more elevated, like Venelles? Is it just as stifling?
Hi there,
I lived in the Aix region for 20 years... I left mainly because of the housing pressure. It's over-urbanized, too much traffic, too many people! That said, it's subjective—many people aren’t bothered by it (apparently) and love the area.
There’s no climate difference between Aix itself and the surrounding villages. By the way, Venelles is only about thirty meters higher than Aix! And that’s just the old village—the rest is just housing developments that aren’t really appealing.
Where to live?
Opinions are divided—when I first arrived, people recommended Venelles and Puyricard to me.
I didn’t like them at all and ended up moving to a village in the Luberon! Ansouis and Pertuis are only 23 km from Aix.
In my opinion, the ideal is to live on the coast (Côte Bleue) if your work schedule is flexible or if you’re self-employed. I’d suggest living on the Côte Bleue near Carry-le-Rouet, for example, or north of Aix on the other side of the Durance in a Luberon village. It’s much quieter there. Otherwise, east of Aix—Le Tholonet, Puyloubier (at the foot of Sainte-Victoire), or Vauvenargues for a beautiful setting close to the city, but it’s not cheap!
Just so you know, if you commute to Aix during peak hours, you’ll still hit traffic jams even if you live farther out!
PS: In terms of housing prices, don’t expect miracles—the value for money is, in my opinion, worse than in the Paris region, where I came from.
Otherwise, no problem with pools—almost everyone has one. That’s usually the first thing they’ll show you, along with the view of Sainte-Victoire, if you’re lucky!
Thanks for your feedback. It's true that Carry is a great spot, but I’m prioritizing schools that are really good around Aix, especially since I work in north Aix.
You wouldn’t happen to be working at the CRNA Sud-Est, by any chance? Le Puy-Sainte-Réparade, La Roque-d'Anthéron, Rognes... Meyrargues are all pretty nice villages, and they’re all north of Aix. Easy access in both directions.
Finding a place we like is one thing, but then the hardest part is finding the right housing there.
Personally, I took my time Watch out for agencies!
Work-wise, if things haven’t changed too much, it’s pretty chill! 😄

Good evening!
Uhhh, you must be confusing it with Grenoble or even Chambéry.
I don’t recall any surrounding hills around Aix-en-Provence.
The big advantage is the Alpes de Haute-Provence further north—it’s much cooler in the summer thanks to the altitude.
And best of all, there aren’t many people around! [:)]
Hi there,
Aix is indeed in a basin, but there isn’t really any significant elevation around... Mont Sainte-Victoire is to the east.
The Alpes de Haute-Provence (Digne is 110 km away) and the Hautes-Alpes (Gap is 150 km away) aren’t exactly close if you're looking for some summer coolness.
evening—just adding that you need to move quickly before prices get really high.
Ever since Peter Mayle and his book *A Year in Provence*, the Luberon has been increasingly taken over by Anglo-Saxons—you’d think Provence was becoming the 52nd American state.
And then you’ve got all these people in the media, especially economists, telling us France is collapsing.
But that’s another topic.
Just adding to my previous reply.
Down south...
In Bouc-Bel-Air and Cabriès, pay close attention to the surroundings before deciding to buy—there’s quite a bit of noise pollution you might not notice during visits: new construction sites, highway ramps, etc.
In Aix-les-Milles, also watch out for areas overflown by VFR traffic, the aerodrome circuit... I found a gorgeous villa with 1 hectare of land... right at the end of the runway!
According to the real estate agency, it was a "protected zone"! !
Yeah, of course we’re planning to rent for at least a year, maybe even two.
The idea is to target THE town and rent while we wait to buy...
That way, the kids could potentially stay in the same school.
