Your favorite cruise lines

Hi everyone (and yes, ladies first 😎)

I was wondering, besides MSC and Costa, which cruise lines are your favorites? Which ones would you like to try?

For my part, I’ve tried Virgin… and how can I put it… it was one of the best cruises of my life! There are a lot of preconceptions about the company that honestly aren’t entirely justified (even if I’ll admit I’m their target audience!).

Anyway, if you’re interested, I’ll give you a little rundown 🙂

Hi Amélie, we’ve done 5 different world cruises—1 on the Luminosa, 1 on the Néoromantica that went up the Amazon to Manaus, and 3 on the Deliziosa. We’ve taken 55 Costa cruises and 14 MSC cruises, and we’re leaving Monday to try CFC for 20 days. We’ll share our thoughts with you!

Hello! I see you’ve done several world cruises too. We did three with Costa: 2017, 2020 (stopped in Australia because of Covid), a 42-day return trip without disembarking, and 2023. Plus lots of transatlantic crossings, MSC, Club Med, and Mermoz back in the day.

We’re going to try CFC from December 22 to January 5 to compare, and honestly, we’re just not into cruises anymore. Costa—so over the attitude of Italian passengers.

Tell us what you think of your CFC cruise.

Thanks in advance! Pas. We’re from Antibes

Good evening! We live in Saint-Laurent-du-Var and were also on the 2020 and 2023 world tours—we definitely might have crossed paths! We’re heading out on the *Renaissance* with some friends from Antibes.

Hi again. Wishing you and your friends from Antibes a great cruise. When you get back, let us know what you think of the *Renaissance*. We’re leaving on December 22nd for 15 days on the *Renaissance* too.

Yeah, we probably crossed paths in 2020 and 2023.

Hope you have a fantastic time. Jacques from Antibes

Good evening,

I absolutely loved it!

The food was excellent—all the restaurants are specialty restaurants (I highly recommend booking them as soon as the app lets you). The Galley is also great, with table service, which I love. I’m so over buffets where everyone touches everything with their dirty hands! 😉

The cabin was super modern, though the shower might be a bit small. But they use biodegradable products! Service and staff: top-notch! I chatted with them a lot, and they love Virgin because they’re generally paid better than on other cruise lines, and you can really tell!

The vibe is AMAZING. We love cruise ship casinos (we never go at home), and it’s such a relaxed, easygoing atmosphere! The shows (also book these before boarding) are really different—interactive but high-quality. It’s far from Broadway-style productions, but a change of pace is nice!

The pool is weird—really small, more like a wading pool than a proper pool. But the gym is state-of-the-art, fantastic!

Passengers: 80% American, the rest Spanish, and a few "others."

For me, it’s a big yes! I’d happily go back, though I get that it’s not for everyone. The vibe is very lively—you’ve got to like that laid-back American style. It’s far from a traditional cruise, so know that before boarding, or you might be disappointed.

Don’t hesitate if you have any other questions! 😉

Hi,

We’ve taken cruises with: Croisière de France, MSC, COSTA, and Princess Cruises in 2015 from Miami to Santiago de Chile. It was our best cruise, even though there were only 8 French people on board. After that cruise, COSTA and MSC seemed like "public housing" to us (and still do today). The finishes, high-quality woodwork. Dinner time of your choice in any restaurant. We had a lobster feast. No Italians on board, so no shouting or screaming... High-quality shows. Even though we don’t speak English, we always found someone to help us—some Canadians and an American couple who spoke French, and we’ve stayed in touch via email or Skype ever since. Mum49

Princess is a fantastic cruise line—their ships are often little gems, and it’s really hard not to be happy on Princess! The itineraries are usually great too! So glad to read your review! 🙂

Hello,

There are cruise lines for every taste, and I think our expectations change over the years.

When the kids were little, Costa was a good fit. Then it became interesting to discover: the massive ships of Royal Caribbean, Celebrity—sometimes inconsistent but not to be overlooked, Holland America with its beautiful itineraries, Princess for its reliability and real suites, Ponant for a touch of exploration.

But for several years now, we’ve been loyal to one cruise line that always meets our expectations: Seabourn. Comfort, food, service, itineraries—we’ve never been disappointed. We’ve recommended it to friends, and they’ve always come back happy.

That said, for scheduling reasons, our next cruise will be with Regent! !

good evening it’s not easy to answer this question I’ll start with the cruise lines I didn’t like PONANT for its oppressive vibe—yacht where you can’t even walk around the boat because it’s so small, terrible entertainment, and really disappointing service quality HOLLAND AMERICA mediocre food, a repetitive buffet where you can’t serve yourself, awful shows, and musical performances with ear-splitting sound MEH NCL I wasn’t convinced by the freestyle concept—lots of poorly dressed people and the food wasn’t great, buffet was repetitive COSTA unfortunately turned into a LOW-COST line; removing tablecloths and cabin fridges is unacceptable in my opinion MSC it’s just okay, or only worth it for a nice itinerary. The YC has become RIDICULOUSLY EXPENSIVE

The cruise lines I love ROYAL CARIBBEAN The OASIS class is amazing—I’ve never felt crowded. What’s great about this line is there’s something for everyone: adults-only areas, family zones, and tons of onboard activities PRINCESS pleasant and calm cruise line, few kids in my experience, great food quality. Too bad there’s no indoor pool—that’s a miss. Nice itineraries CELEBRITY I’m a fan of its solarium and adult-only indoor pool. It’s the most beautiful pool I’ve seen on any cruise line (SOLSTICE class). The dining is top-notch, and the buffet is the best I’ve experienced AZAMARA Good, fairly quiet cruise line with few kids and excellent customer service. One downside: the tiny pool and limited buffet options. Nice, unique itineraries OCEANIA Great cruise line, EXCELLENT dining and high-quality service. One downside: the pool isn’t heated enough. Lovely itineraries

Well, you really confirm that there’s a cruise for everyone!

I’m surprised by your opinion on Ponant (though not *that* surprised), because when I went on AmaWaterways (a river cruise), my partner didn’t like the small-ship vibe either—he prefers to stay anonymous on a ship and blend into the crowd.

I 100% agree with you on Royal and Azamara—I’ve never, ever been disappointed!

Thanks so much for your thoughts, anyway.

good evening I don’t know the AmaWaterways line, but what really disappointed me about PONANT was the value for money. You imagine it’s going to be excellent, but it’s far from it… especially when it comes to service quality!! In short, it’s not worth the price at all 😕 Maybe for exceptional cruises like the NORTH POLE. There’s something for every taste !

Ohhhh, you’re making me nervous now... I’m sailing with them in May... I’m bringing my mom along... I’ll give you my take on the food and service. I think afterward, it’s always tricky to sell luxury because everyone’s expectations are so different when it comes to luxury. Some are happy with a bottle of water in the cabin and a chocolate on the pillow, while others see luxury as anticipating all our needs and desires, even the most unlikely ones...

The issue is that Ponant kind of plays alone in its league—if you’re looking for French-speaking options, there aren’t many competitors out there either.

And yes, for expedition cruises, the *Commandant Charcot* is clearly a few notches above! That said, if you’re open to other languages, there are other companies worth considering in the polar regions, and some even offer French-speaking departures (thanks to French-speaking Canadians for pushing for the French language too).

Hi Isa, I think you’re being a little harsh on a cruise line you only spent 24 hours with, especially since they refunded your cruise afterward.

Hi Catherine, I’m running into Ponant’s best advocate again 😉 Sure, I bailed on that ship, but I still got to see what it was like—I regret it. For me, the value for money on a cruise like that just wasn’t there. Check-in was super disorganized, there was a clear shortage of servers in the restaurant, not even a small buffet to welcome passengers at boarding, zero entertainment, and the way they talked to guests!!! Arriving at 12:55 instead of 13:00 and being told to wait outside standing up—it killed the vibe right away 😞 I’ll never forget that. And for me personally, I felt a real sense of oppression. I like being able to walk on the deck and circle the ship, but here, that was impossible. And since the indoor spaces were so cramped… that’s exactly how I felt. Just to remind you, I wasn’t the only one who left—others did the same on the day of boarding. For those who stayed, some ended up in the hospital because despite all the precautions, a lot of people caught COVID. In such tight spaces, it’s no surprise.

On the plus side, I thought the cabin was really nice, and the food was high quality—except for breakfast, which wasn’t any more varied or better than on American premium cruise lines. They were honest and gave us a full refund for the cruise, just like they’d promised on board. Anyway, everyone’s opinion deserves respect, but I’m not the only one saying Ponant isn’t worth the price they charge—far from it! !

Hi there! Don’t worry—every experience is useful. I don’t know how old your mom is, but a small ship might suit her... I know mine wouldn’t like it because she enjoys the evening shows and a bit of entertainment. What really bothered me was not knowing the port schedules—it’s all up to the captain’s discretion, which can be unsettling when you’re used to planning your visits... What’s your itinerary?

Hi Isa,

I’m no more of a Ponant advocate than any other cruise line, but it doesn’t seem right to judge or condemn a company based on a single, short experience.

Every cruise has the characteristics and direction set by the company, but it also depends on how the crew applies them. And that human element can vary a lot—especially during Covid, when crews were under extra stress too.

As for so-called premium cruise lines, I’d love to know which one would’ve refunded a cruise after someone had already spent 24 hours onboard in that situation?

Where I completely agree with you, though, is on the prices—I think they’re way too expensive.
Catherine

In 24 hours, you can easily get a sense of the value for money, and for a classic itinerary, it's not good. I don’t mean to sound pretentious, but with my experience, we do have a lot of benchmarks to quickly assess a cruise line. It’s true that you might have a bad experience with staff friendliness, but when 2, 3, or 4 crew members aren’t very welcoming, it raises questions. The facts: poor organization for boarding, a lack of staff in the restaurant, and the only cruise line that doesn’t provide lunch on embarkation day. A tiny pool and, most importantly, the impossibility of taking a walk on the outer deck. And you don’t need to stay longer to realize that. You keep saying I shouldn’t say anything because they refunded me, but excuse me—if you’d been on board, you’d have understood!!! They gathered us to tell us we might not even leave Nice, that maybe no stops would be made... so paying that much for this??? Believe me, even Ponant fans complained and left the ship too. Other people told me they didn’t care about being stuck in Nice for 7 days, KNOWING we weren’t allowed to leave the ship to walk around the city!!! So yeah, I can tell you, you feel trapped on that boat—a gilded prison with no activities and no way to get out.

So I think every experience is different. Ponant might be worth the price for very specific expedition itineraries, but no, it’s not the best cruise line in the world, as Ponant passengers who’ve never tried any other company seem to think. Their preconceptions actually made us laugh. Anyway, that’s my opinion—thanks for respecting it.

No, it's not the best cruise line in the world, as PONANT passengers who don't know any other company seem to think... We actually had a good laugh at the preconceptions they have.

Absolutely true—passengers who don’t know anything beyond this cruise line get carried away with their comments and preconceived notions, sometimes to the point of ridiculousness, all with total confidence. We’ve had a few experiences like that too. 😂🤦‍♂️ I totally respect your opinion—it’s just for the fun of discussing, right? A little contradiction spices up the debate. 😜 The key is to keep things balanced. 😊

Thanks for your reply, and yeah, like you, being stuck on such a small boat for a week—I would’ve said no too!

I’ll finally get to form my own opinion. We’re doing the Hebrides islands from Glasgow in May—I’m *really* excited! The itinerary is gorgeous, and I’m hoping to see lots of birds and some remote, sparsely populated areas. I spend half the year in England, so for me, it’ll be a real treat to see a completely different side of this beautiful country!

I’ll keep you posted on how I feel about it. Like you, I’ve tried a few cruise lines (luxury or not), so I know how to appreciate them and be critical when needed.
