Hi there, I’m spending a week in Morocco (Rabat - Meknes - Fes). I’ll be traveling solo—is it safe for a woman over 60? For transportation, I’m planning to take the train. I was thinking of buying my ticket last minute, but it’s around the end-of-year period…? I’ll be in Meknes on December 31st—any suggestions on how they celebrate New Year’s Eve there? Is anyone visiting these destinations? Maybe we could meet up…? Thanks in advance.

Hi there, Rabat is the safest city in Morocco. I’ve been living there on and off for 17 years. No issues in Meknes or Fez either. It’s no more "sketchy" than any European city. Trains can get really crowded, though. For example, the Rabat–Casablanca line is often packed, especially in the late afternoon. Fez is less busy, I think. New Year’s Eve? Pretty quiet...

No, you have nothing to fear in Morocco. Nowhere. I’ve been traveling solo in Morocco for 20 years. Never had any issues.

While the train can be packed, know that CTM and Supratours buses are comfortable and safe. You can book them online 2 or 3 days in advance. By reserving a little ahead of time, seats 1, 2, 3, 4—the front ones—are the best for the scenery and photos.

I’ve spent Christmas in Morocco before and never looked for a dedicated celebration, since Christmas isn’t part of the country’s culture.

Hi Brigitte,

I traveled solo in Morocco a few years ago with no issues at all, taking trains, buses, etc. (I’m quite a bit younger than you).

Thanks to all of you for your replies. I’m heading off with confidence, despite the Africa Cup of Nations... Happy Holidays! Brigitte
