je ne partage pas tes observations sur le parcours : canal du midi jusqu'aux environ de rochefort, partie que j'ai fais debut septembre.
je l'ai fais dans le sens est --> ouest et à vélo couché.
pour la partie canal du midi:
de palavas à toulouse, pratiquement pas d'enrobé ou bitume, des petit chemins etroit en terre, du stabilisé et a certain endroit en grosse épaisseur ce qui est super casse gueule.
enrobé une 40 aines de km avant Toulouse si je me rappelle bien.
de Toulouse à castets en dorthe pratiquement que de la voie verte mais c'est terriblement monotone.
la velodyssée a partir de lege capferet est sympa mais parfois assez difficile car la voie monte et descend en continue jusqu'au environ ce Carcan-plage et par endroit assez raide mais toujours une voie verte bien roulante.
je suis en train de faire le recit detaillé de ce voyage et le mettrais bientot en ligne sur mon site

Ce n'est pas seulement 8 km Claude ! Sur 240 km, seuls 80 km possèdent aujourd’hui un bon revêtement (entre Toulouse et Avignonet et entre Béziers et Portiragnes). Ailleurs on peut passer partout, mais la pluie peut rendre le chemin de halage impraticable, surtout en hiver et au printemps !

j'avais regardé un peu les routes parallèles.

Ayant enfin longé en 2010 ce fameux canal du midi , Biclou propose ce dossier, dans lequel sont rassemblées les informations que utiles pour cette bambée. (Attention en 2012 et 2013 : élagage des platanes malades)
Uu VTT ou VTC est indispensable, plus approprié ou une randonneuse équipée de bons pneus de 28 mm de section.
Départ : Sète ; (piste cyclable du Lido, le long de la mer à partir du port) ... rejoindre alors Agde par la route départementale.
Le canal débute en pleine ville de Adge (attention pas de balisage), suivre alors le chemin de halage en laissant le canal sur votre main droite.
Attention les 10 premiers kilomètres sont à ras de l'eau et assez secouants, mais joli (un VTC ou VTT est mieux).
Ensuite ça va mieux, alternance de chemins de halage plus ou moins larges, gravillonnés au mieux à herbeux, et un passage assez racineux, mais passe bien.
Vraie voie verte goudronnée une trentaine de kms avant Toulouse et puis de Toulouse à Bordeaux.
Marseillan ..Béziers, Carcassonne, Toulouse, Agen, Bordeaux et la mer.
Beziers, au arrive une piste cyclable, le balisage est folko en ville et devrait rejoindre la canal au niveau des 7 écluses (magnifique). le parcours arrive à Carcassonne en pleine ville à 20 m de la gare, mais ne pas suivre le canal dans la partie encaissée car trop dangereux à ras de l'eau.
Arrivée : Bordeaux : 550 km environ, 4 jours pour le Biclou, mais compter bien 8 jours.
Carte à Utiliser (car les topos, n'empêchent pas de lire les cartes) : une bonne carte Michelin N° : 5.., 5.. permet de se retrouver en cas d"éloignement.
La partie Sète Toulouse est peu documentée en indications de camping et autres, référrez vous aux guides, mais de jolis traversées offrent commerces et gites divers.

+1 récit efficace et sympathique.
Entre sur la Vélodyssée Lacanau Océan et Hourtin on peut éviter la piste de Allemands (40 cms de béton parfois cassé) quelques kms à l'intérieur des terres il y une jolie piste qui passe prés de l'étang de Cousseau, puis arrivé à Maubisson, chercher la Route des Phares, une deux voie bitumée fermé aux voitures - on voit bien tout ça sur open runner.
Pour Gobois64, Bayonne Arcachon est très agréable à faire. Pau Bayonne n'est pas vraiment matérialisé donc il faut commencer en kayak depuis Navarrenx 😏

Puisque j'habite à côté de Navarrenx, je pense longer le gave d'Oloron pour rejoindre Peyrehorade puis l'Adour en rive gauche pour rejoindre Bayonne.

Peyrehorade Bayonne c'est par petite route que tu planifiera sur carte ou GPS avant - il est possible de trouver des routes pas trop passante, assez plat et sympa (on a vu des pêcheurs relever les filets sur l'estuaire en mai) La voie verte n'est pas réellement matérialisé (le tracé sur openrunner n'est pas mal mais pas signalé sur place en mai 2013)
La l'entrée et sortie de Bayonne se fait par des zones industrielles.
Tout ce qu'on peut dire est que ça motive pour pédaler plus vite pour quitter le secteur !
La suite est agréable est tracé et sur voie verte (souvent en site propre) - on attendait à de la ligne droite et pins sans intérêts mais c'était assez varié.
En juillet 2013, j'ai fais le canal de la Garonne Toulouse -Bordeaux.
Quand j'ai débarqué du train à Toulouse j'ai hésité , je vais à gauche ou à droite ,
personnellement je n'ai pas regretté d'avoir fait Toulouse-Bordeaux, je n'ai pas trouvé
ça monotone, comme quoi les gouts et les couleurs........
La prochaine fois en 2014 je ferais Toulouse Béziers , pour voir la différence
et d'après les différents récits je m'attend au pire.......
J'apprécie les voies verte pour leur calme par rapport aux satanées voiture ou camio qui nous frôlent.
Je confirme pour l'avoir faite en juillet dernier, l'ancienne piste des Allemands en dessous d'Hourtin est en mauvais état. Ca passe, mais c'est sportif, surtout avec une grosse charge.
Il y a aussi la route à mi chemin entre l'océan et le lac, interdite aux automobiles... mais en plein soleil avec un bitume presque noir...
on l'a abandonné car en 700x28 c'était de la torture, avec des risques de casse surtout après Carcans.
De Lacanau à Carcans il y le chemin qui passe prés de l'étang de Cousseau qui est très agréable. Il tourne (agréable surtout après le chemin Bordeaux / Lacanau qui est monotone. Il monte et descend un peu qui fatigue un peu mais rompe aussi avec le plat de façon assez plaisant avec des points de vu. C'est une piste bitumé mais 1m50. On peut s'arrêter voir l'étang et (réserve naturelle) à 1km à pied.
Thomas (Makt95t) viens de décrire la route des phares de façon très juste, mais on l'a fait vent arrière et on a tracé à presque 30 à l'heure sans effort (15 km)
Les VTTistes apprécieront peut être l'autre piste, je peux le comprendre.

m'a fourni la partie jusqu'à l'estuaire (Royan) mais ils annoncent que actuellement il n'y a pas de guide qui présentent les pistes plus au sud. Je les aient appelé et une édition est prévue en début d'année 2014.

nous l'avons parcouru en avril 2013 on est passé par la vallée du Lot a partir de Cahors et ensuite canal latéral de la Garonne et ensuite le fameux canal du Midi et la galère parce que cette année le printemps a été très pluvieux donc canal du Midi impraticable par endroit tellement d'eau et de boue (nous sommes en vtc) que l'on a fait plus de route que de voie verte
on va certainement le retenté cet été direction le bassin d'Arcachon ensuite Nantes et retour par la Loire et le Rhône sur 20 jours environs

Personnellement, j' utilise essentiellement les cartes IGN 1/25000 (bleues). Voies vertes ou pas, il y a tout pour faire du vélo ou chercher un camping, une boulangerie, ou un simple petit chemin qui évite une grosse route.
Au delà de 500 km, cela commence à poser un problème de place ou de poids... mais en dessous c'est acceptable.
Pour le week end de paques nous pensons aller du côté de Millau en camping car. J'aimerai faire aussi un peu de vtt aux alentours, le top serait d'allier…

I’m planning to cycle from Morlaix to Brest (via Roscoff and the V45 coastal route). We’ll start riding on August 16th for 13 days (with stops for island visits, surfing, etc.). Is there a lot of traffic at this time of year? I’ve got two kids, 11 and 13, and we don’t like riding in the middle of cars (we’ve already done the Vélomaritime—Caen to Cherbourg—the Loire route from Orléans to Saumur, the Vélodyssée from Nantes to Royans, and the canals like the Nivernais and Bourgogne, where there were plenty of bike-only lanes, which isn’t the case on this route).

I’ve got my flight ticket sorted—departing in mid-November and returning in mid-March. I’ll arrive in Santiago and leave from Buenos Aires.
I’ve already been to southern Argentina, specifically Torres del Paine National Park, and I’d love to go back to do the full W trek (I only did the shorter version last time).
I also want to do some hiking and maybe even tackle a summit. I climb and occasionally do some mountaineering, so I’ll definitely be going with a guide.
I plan to start around Temuco in Chile, with the idea of heading toward the lakes, then taking the Carretera Austral.
I’m not sure if I’ll go all the way to Ushuaia—it’s supposed to not be *that* worth it, except for the bragging rights of saying you’ve been to the end of the world.
I saw there are lakes in Argentina too.
I don’t have a precise itinerary, but what I’d love is, once I reach the southernmost point of my trip, to take a mini-cruise to see some wildlife. Any tips for that?

I’m planning a bikepacking trip in a few weeks along the Véloroute V81, also known as the Vélosud, from Biarritz to Le Barcarès.
Has anyone here already done this route? Any info is welcome, whether it’s about the route itself, gear, or accommodation. I’ll prioritize staying with locals as much as possible. On that note, I just signed up for the brand-new site *Guidon et Couette* ((www.guidon-et-couette.fr)), which offers free accommodation between cyclists across the country, but there’s almost no one listed along my route!

I'm developing a free and open-source web app for planning walking and cycling trips (and even car trips). You can create a route by clicking directly on the map to add waypoints, and it can consist of multiple stages. The app provides tools to edit the stages and the overall route, and to display useful information (distances, altitudes, and elevation changes). A relief profile can be shown as a graph for a specific stage or the entire route.
Once the route is ready, it can be exported as a GPX file, which can then be used with a GPS or a mobile navigation app.
The app is built in JavaScript and runs entirely in the web browser. It uses the Leaflet library and several OpenStreetMap-based services. Initially developed for my personal needs (I enjoy hiking and cycle touring), I’d be happy to share it with anyone who might find it useful. It’s free to use, doesn’t require an account, and the source code is available.
After testing it for three years across various modes of transport, I’m sharing this video of a bike packing case. It’s made from recycled cardboard and shrink-wrapped, with adjustable thickness and added bubble wrap depending on the level of protection you want.
Installing spacers at the fork and chainstays makes the packaging compact. With the fifteen-odd euros for shrink-wrapping at the airport, this case travels really well.

- Low bulk (1.10m x 0.70m x 0.25m for a large frame), it fits vertically in train luggage compartments and the total dimensions (x+y+z) don’t exceed 2.40m.

- Discreet packaging when dealing with bus drivers and train conductors, as it looks like an ordinary parcel.
- No need to return to the starting point to retrieve the case from your outbound trip, which you’d otherwise have to store somewhere, or deal with a bulky cover to pack in your panniers.
- You can still check tire pressure through the plastic film without damaging the packaging too much.
Drawbacks: Around 3 hours for this lengthy and meticulous process—removing the wheels, pedals, handlebars, and derailleur without misaligning them, then securing all components to the frame.

That said, I’m tempted by a suspension fork that could offer some comfort on rougher roads.
The recent appearance of gravel suspension forks on the market might meet my needs—at least on paper.
I’m particularly considering the RockShox Rudy Ultimate XPLR fork.
Unlike MTB forks, its travel is short: either 30 mm or 40 mm.
It weighs 1400 g, which is 400/500 g more than a steel fork.
Any thoughts or real-world feedback on this?
I’m also wondering about the durability of magnesium (lower leg) for long-distance bike touring.
And what’s the impact of skipping the manufacturer-recommended maintenance every 50 and 200 hours? That’s bound to happen on a long trip unless you carry extra gear.
More generally, how reliable are these kinds of forks?
I’m making an exception and creating a separate post this time, since it’s all about France. In May, we spent a week in Provence, specifically in the Luberon, exploring the cycling routes *Autour du Luberon à Vélo*, the *Véloroute du Calavon* (part of EuroVelo 8), and the shorter *Les Ocres à Vélo* route. Together, they gave us an amazing journey through rolling hills, vineyards, lavender fields still green in spring, and some of the most stunning landscapes in southern France.
It was, of course, the perched villages that impressed us the most. We visited Gordes, Roussillon, Bonnieux, Lacoste, Lourmarin, Ménerbes, Oppède-le-Vieux, Cucuron, and Lauris. Many of them are among the most beautiful villages in Provence, and it’s hard not to agree with that reputation.
One interesting point is the route of EuroVelo 8 in this part of the region. The official path mainly follows the old railway line of the *Véloroute du Calavon*, which is very comfortable and safe. But in our opinion, cyclists traveling EuroVelo 8 around the Mediterranean would discover even more treasures if the route passed through villages like Bonnieux, Lacoste, or Oppède-le-Vieux.
We were also pleasantly surprised by how safe cycling felt. Most of the route takes small local roads, but traffic is light, drivers are respectful, and road design really takes cyclists into account. It’s one of those places where you can ride peacefully even without separated bike lanes.

Happy owner of a Pegasus Estremo bike with a Rohloff hub, which is giving me trouble with the SF11-NCX-FT-E-LITE 700C TS 300/0 fork (serial number TD01329060). It’s starting to show its age, and I’d like to repair it to extend the life of my beloved bike.
The suspension is gone, and there’s an oil leak from the seals.
Does anyone know how to repair it? Where can I find parts that are about fifteen years old? Or where to find an identical replacement fork? Just to clarify, the Magura HS11 brakes are mounted using Firm Tech, meaning they’re on pivots behind the fork, facing the frame.

I’m landing in Madagascar with a buddy before the end of April 2026. We’re planning to bike around for about twenty days or so. We don’t have a specific goal other than exploring the country and meeting the locals.

Last year, my wife and I explored the High Atlas by tandem. Completely smitten, we're heading back in April (Anti Atlas) and May (High and Middle Atlas), still on our tandem.
Do you have any info on the track between Amezri and Ali Ait Nito? Are the river crossings in the Tessaout still there? It's not easy to navigate with a loaded tandem... especially if the river level is high due to this year's heavy snowmelt!

I’ve been traveling for a few years now with a high-quality mountain bike, but it’s equipped with hydraulic disc brakes. I live (pedal) with the constant worry of a breakdown (leak, air bubble, heat causing the fluid to...). My bike mechanic tells me it’s impossible to switch them out for V-brakes.
What do you all think? Am I taking a big risk continuing (alone) with these brakes? Thanks in advance for your great tips!
First post here to share a quick recap of our west-to-east bike trip along Algeria’s coast in January 2025.
It was just the two of us—my partner and I—with French passports and not a word of Arabic. No friends or welcoming hosts in the country.
Under those conditions, we’d strongly advise against going.
Our original plan was to follow the coast from Algiers to Tunis. We ended up cycling from Algiers to Béjaia, then took the train from Béjaia to Annaba (with a stop in Constantine), and finally biked to the border.
We were tailed by police the whole way—whether on our bikes, on the train, or even on foot while exploring towns. On top of that, we couldn’t wild camp and were limited to the few state-approved hotels that accept foreigners. Under those circumstances, connecting with locals was especially tough.
With such an omnipresent and intrusive police presence, we’d definitely recommend against this destination for bike touring. A really sad situation that completely cuts you off from the local population...

In the attached details below, I need to add some "non-riding" days (rest days, basically).
So I’m looking to "shorten" the trip by taking ferries or trains for some stretches. Which areas could I skip?
