A few friends and I are planning our trip to Japan for next autumn.
This will be my first time traveling, which is why we’ve decided to go for a big trip of at least 2 months, maybe even 3.
So far, we’ve estimated the budget to be between 7,000 and 10,000 € per person for the stay. I’m not sure if that’s too high or too low, considering we’ll be moving around a lot.
Here’s a summary of the route we’d like to take:
First, we definitely want to visit the classics like Tokyo, Kyoto, etc.
Then head toward Mount Fuji with Fujiyoshida and the surrounding area. We’d also like to visit some less touristy, more authentic spots like the Wakayama region.
We’d like to check out some mountain or countryside villages like Shirakawa-go for a few hikes.
We’re still debating whether to visit Miyajima and Hiroshima since we’re not sure we’ll have enough time. And we sadly had to cut Hokkaido from our list for the same reason.
I won’t go into every detail since we’ve mapped out over twenty places, but those are the main highlights.
As for our travel style:
We want to take our time. Not try to cram in as much as possible without any breaks or enjoyment.
Most of the time, we’ll be staying in Airbnbs and youth hostels.
For food, we’ll mix it up between restaurants, pre-made meals, and cooking our own.
For transportation, we’re considering renting a car to reach villages in the countryside. (I’m a bit nervous about the road rules over there.)
For activities, one or two a day seems reasonable. (Both free and paid ones.)
But I have no idea how much souvenirs might cost.
I’ve often read on forums that it’s between 200 and 600 €?
My questions:
So, that’s the plan.
We’re not sure yet if we’ll go for two or three months.
It’ll mostly come down to money. We want to be mindful of our budget but still treat ourselves—no regrets about missing out on an activity or restaurant we really wanted to try.
Do you have any advice or suggestions for us? What do you think of our itinerary?
For flight tickets, I’m estimating between 650 and 900 € for a round trip. Does that sound about right?
But I have no idea which airline to choose?

I just lightened my wallet by 3000 € for 3 tickets: Paris > Tokyo > Osaka > Paris (well, not just mine—I’m exaggerating, there are two of us). We leave at the end of October, so we still have a few months to prepare. That said, I’d rather start early to make sure we don’t miss anything (like the Ghibli Museum—I couldn’t go last time, and anyway, I’ll have to wait until September to book). Last time, there were three adults, so it was pretty straightforward. Eleven years later, well, now it’s two adults with a 10-year-old😛.
So I’m wondering how many days to spend in Tokyo. My daughter idealizes the city (that’s why she wants to go to Japan), and she’s really drawn to Japanese culture and food. Actually, what first got her interested in Japan were all the *kawaii* character products... Tokyo is such a fascinating city, but it can also be exhausting—especially for a kid, and I’m not sure what to expect. Beyond Tokyo, honestly, I’m not entirely sure. I was thinking of Hakone and maybe stopping by Fujikyu Highlands. Then heading down to Osaka for a few days in Kyoto before flying home (our return flight is from Osaka). We only have 11 days there (not counting the arrival day, and since our flight leaves at 11:30 PM on departure day, we’ll have the whole day), so it’s not a ton of time. I already spent a week in Kyoto on my last trip (huge crush on it), and I’d love to have two months there, but... well, you know how it is.
For example: 5 days in Tokyo 2 days in Hakone 4 days in Osaka/Kyoto
What do you think? If you’ve done this trip with kids, do you have any tips for family-friendly accommodations in Tokyo and Hakone? My daughter would love to try an onsen. We have a decent budget, but it’s not unlimited. We’d like to book as we go to spread out the costs a bit.

Tellement prisé qu'en raison de sa surfréquentation touristique et d'un comportement déplacé de certains touristes amateurs de photographies, le conseil des habitants a décidé de prendre un arrêté anti-photographies.
Comme le rapportent nos confrères du Monde, le nombre de voyageurs étrangers a été multiplié par cinq entre 2012 et 2017, pour atteindre 7,4 millions. Les touristes n’hésitent pas, par exemple, à pénétrer dans les propriétés privées, les temples, à arracher des lanternes en papier ou encore importuner les geiko et les maiko (nom donné aux geishas et à leurs apprenties) pour décrocher le cliché original à poster sur les réseaux sociaux.

Nous aimerions partir au Japon en septembre prochain et si possible sans agence! Nous avons déjà beaucoup voyagé à travers le monde de cette manière mais, nous étions beaucoup plus jeunes et ''ce n'était pas au Japon''.
Mes questions sont d'ordres pratiques, à savoir : Le Japon se visite de manière itinérante, donc refaire les bagages tous les deux ou trois jours et prendre le train ou le bus etc, ! Si l'on se trouve à Tokyo par exemple, comment fait 'on ? un taxi , un bus ou autre mais pour se rendre où et à quel endroit ? Il doit y avoir une multitude de gares ou d'arrêts de bus dans cette immense ville ou l'anglais n'est pas courant ? Ne perdons nous pas trop de temps à chercher ce que l'on doit faire et comment le faire ? Est-ce vraiment pratique pour des personnes de 70 ans , même si l'on est en pleine forme… C'est vraiment la chose qui me turlupine, c'est devoir être sur le trottoir sans vraiment être sur de trouver de l'aide et de se perdre .
Le Japon, ce n'est pas New-York ou Paris voir même Bangkok, c'est vraiment un endroit des plus dépaysant qui ne ressemble à aucun autre endroit dans le monde. Je voulais ajouter que nous sommes très très visite, nous prenons tout notre temps pour chaque endroit donc les voyages en groupe ne sont pas notre tasse de thé ! Bref ...

Je ne sais pas si la construction de celui-ci est cohérent, j'ai notamment des doutes pour le 19/05 (trop de trajet? journée trop chargée?) et le 22/05 (trajet Hiroshima-Tokyo trop long?). J'aimerai également passer une journée à Hakone, pensez-vous que cela est réalisable le 22/05 (faisant ainsi étape entre Hiroshima et Tokyo)? Bien évidement, je suis preneur de tous conseils et avis. I’ve got a few questions about Kyoto for our trip in early November (we’re staying 5 days):
1) Is it worth spending a day in Kurama/Kibune from Kyoto? Has anyone tried the onsen in Kurama?
2) Visiting Fushimi Inari for sunset and wandering around in the evening—good idea?
3) Going to the Gion Corner show in Kyoto?
4) Skipping the more touristy temples in Kyoto (Golden Temple, Silver Temple) to see less crowded ones like Shinshogokuraku-ji and Tofuku-ji?
5) Any recommendations for a kaiseki dinner (under 10,000 yen)?

Day 7: Sasebo + Kujukushima Pearl + fireworks show Day 8: Karatsu (Yobuko market + cave + cape) + Matsuri Kanchi Day 9: Kashima + garden + Tara Day 10: Higashi Sonogi, overnight in Nagasaki. Is it better to return the car in Arita or Nagasaki? Day 11: Nagasaki Day 12: Nagasaki, overnight in Fukuoka, so departure by train from Nagasaki Day 13: Munakata and Oshima, and in the evening, Hanabi Kama

My wife and I are spending July in Japan: 10 days touring Kyushu Island, 5 days in Okinawa, 1 day in Osaka (for the World Expo), 3 days in Kyoto (which we’ve already visited), and the rest in Tokyo.
I’m reaching out to see if you have any car rental agencies to recommend in Fukuoka (ideally at the airport) and in Naha (either in the city or at the airport).

On est une famille avec 2 enfants 12 et 10 ans . Nous prévoyons dans un futur sans virus, un voyage au Japon, on hésitait entre 15 jours au printemps ou 3 semaines en ete mais les JO étant reporte, je crois que le printemps sera bien. On est des fans de jeux video, manga, nature , animaux et monsieur reve de tester le wagyu ou autre sushi. Les enfants veulent aussi absolument faire le nouveau parc universal studio avec le parc Nintendo.
Je vous propose une ebauche de planning assez classique mais J ai du mal a evaluer le temps des visites donc je sais pas ce qui est faisable. Je ne me suis pas encore renseigner sur les transports a part le JR pass de tokyo a kyoto mais pour hakone-fujiyoshida- kyoto Y a t il un autre moyen ou faut repasser par Tokyo ?

Our favorite spots in 2024: Kanazawa, Takayama, and Miyajima Island. We love temples, gardens, and would love to explore the nature, which looks incredible.

Quel genre d'itinéraire vous me suggérer? Nous sommes ouvert à tout, ou presque. Pour avoir rester 1 jour à Fukuoka il y a 7 ans, nous avions aimé notre première impression de la ville. Donc, c'est sûr qu'on aimerait y consacrer peut-être un peu de temps. pour le reste, je suis ouvert à vos idées
Pour Shikoku, je comprends qu'il faut idéalement, louer une auto. Je ne crois pas avoir de problème à convaincre mon conjoint de le faire. Ça semble être une région peu visité par les étrangers et un peu plus "relax" que le reste du pays. Bref....

Un beau programme qui permet d'atterrir à Tokyo, de faire un petit détour par Kyushu, et de repartir après le dernier match depuis Tokyo.
J'ouvre ce fil pour pouvoir échanger des informations relatives à la coupe du monde, évènements, supporters, lieux de rassemblement, bars... Personnellement j'irai faire un tour dans les pubs sportif, histoire d'aller boire une bière avec des supporters anglais, nz ou autre.
Si vous connaissez des lieux où des supporters français (expats ou touristes) peuvent se rencontrer n'hésitez pas à partager. Tokyo ou Fukuoka ;)
Autre point: l'étiquette. Y-a t-il une étiquette particulière à adopter dans et aux abords des stades japonais ? Quelque chose de spécifique ? Se balader toute la journée en groupe avec un maillot de l'équipe est-il mal vu ? (à éviter dans certains types de restaurants... ?). Je pose cette question car cela change dans tous les pays. (en Angleterre on m'a reproché de m'être levé pour applaudir après un essai...).

We’d like to get a (very rough) sense of just how fast Asia is moving compared to what we see in the West (we’re from Quebec). For now, our very preliminary list includes Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Singapore. There are obviously plenty of other options—Seoul, Shanghai, etc.

2) I’ve heard that credit cards (we each have a Revolut + 1 Visa Premier) aren’t widely used and that it’s better to have cash. Can you confirm?
3) Are foreign credit cards still not accepted at bank ATMs? Still 7-Eleven or the Post Office? And what about American Express?

Hi everyone, and thanks to all the contributors on this Japan forum who’ll help me prepare an upcoming trip with my wife in October–November this year.
We’ve already been to Japan before, back in 2013 for 15 days in August, visiting the major tourist hubs: Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Himeji, and Ogimachi.
This time, we’re taking more time—about a month—with the following points of interest:
Start of the trip with a few days in Tokyo
Osaka International Exposition on October 11–12, 2025
Jidai Matsuri Festival in KYOTO on October 22, 2025
Karatsu Kunchi Festival from November 2–4
Our goal is to blend into the crowd and make connections in festive atmospheres. Do these stops sound interesting to you?
Is it a good idea to stay in a central location between October 10 and 23 to get to the Osaka Expo and the Jidai Matsuri Festival in Kyoto using public transport, and to explore the region in between?
Between Kyoto and the KARATSU Festival from October 23 to November 1, we’re thinking of traveling by shinkansen with a stopover for a few days to visit Hiroshima and the surrounding area.

Je débute mes recherches pour préparer un voyage au Japon en 2021 ( avril ou octobre pendant les vacances scolaires zone C avec certainement 11 à 12 nuits sur place)
Nous sommes un couple avec un ado de 17 ans.
Les témoignages me donnent envie de tout visiter...mais il faut faire un choix...c'est là que vous intervenez 😄!
Itinéraire 1: arrivée à Tokyo, départ d'Osaka J-1 et 2: Tokyo pour le côté branché + 1 parc plutôt que visites de temples. J3 et 4 Hiroshima et miyajima J 5-6: shimanami kaido ( j'ai 2 triathletes a la maison!. Idéalement imabari-onomichi avec nuit sur une des îles) J7-8-9-10: Kyoto ( avec journée a Nara et Universal studio d'Osaka) J11 nuit près aéroport de Kansai car départ tôt pour la France Sur cet itinéraire JR pass 7 jours? Avis logement et répartition des nuits... Ça me paraît un marathon, non?
Itinéraire 2: je zappe Tokyo ( pour mieux y revenir une autre fois?). Vol AR osaka J1-2-3: Kyoto J4-5: Hiroshima et miyajima J6-8: shimanami kaido ( ferry Hiroshima- Matsuyama puis train jusqu'à ibamari). Nuit sur une des îles. J9-10-11: osaka ( +Universal studio, Nara si non fait en début de séjour?) Sur cet itinéraire JR pass setouchi?
Autre question : mon mari et mon fils loueront certainement un vélo de route...et moi un vélo électrique...j'ai malheureusement vu qu'il faudrait le rendre au même endroit où passer par le service de retour Wakka....qui peut m'expliquer ?

Est-ce que vous recommandez Kamakura ou Nikko? Jour 4 - Hakone avec bains thermaux Jour 5 - Magome Jour 6 - Matsumoto Jour 7 et 8 - Takayama Jour 9 - Kanazawa Jour 10 à 13 - Kyoto : vous recommandez Nara, Himeji? Jour 14 et 15 - Miyajima Jour 16 - Osaka
