Hi everyone, I’m a die-hard fan of India, but it’s time I discovered Thailand too to broaden my Asian horizons. I’m heading there on January 19, 2025, for a 46-day trip (no visa needed as I’m French). I’ve pored over a few guidebooks and travel blogs. Based on what caught my interest, I’ve put together a rough itinerary and list of sights. But since I know absolutely nothing about Thailand, I’m kind of flying blind here. Since I’m not exactly a spring chicken anymore, I’ve opted for a few bases where I’ll stay several days in the same place. That way, I won’t have to change locations and hotels every day or so, packing and unpacking my suitcase constantly. Instead, I plan to explore the surrounding area each day, within a maximum radius of 50 to 70 km. So, first question: Is that kind of round-trip distance manageable in a day in Thailand? In India, renting a car for a day—with a driver—currently costs around 35 to 40 € per day. Knowing that 1,300 to 1,500 THB would be my absolute max, and even then, only if I don’t rent a car every single day. Which brings me to my second question: Am I being unrealistic? Otherwise—third question—once I’m settled in the city I’ve chosen as my base, can I get around within that 50–70 km radius using public transport? I’ve already booked all my hotels—with free cancellation—on booking.com at an average price of 950/1,000 THB per night. Does that put me in a good range for value for money? Or am I dreaming?

Here’s my plan:

BANGKOK (13 days, 14 nights): 1 week for exploring Bangkok – Kanchanaburi/Erawan National Park? – Ayutthaya/Lopburi? – Muang Boran – Samut – Songkram/Amphawa

Bangkok -> Chiang Mai by overnight train in first-class sleeper

CHIANG MAI (6 days/6 nights): Mae Hong Son – Hot springs – Chiang Dao – caves – Lamphun – other places to be decided on the spot based on what’s worth seeing and transport options

Chiang Mai -> Chiang Rai

CHIANG RAI (7 days/8 nights): Fang – Tha Ton – Chiang Saen – Doi Tung – Chiang Khong – Doi Ang Khang, Phu Chi Fah, etc.

Chiang Rai -> Phrae

PHRAE (4 days/5 nights): Lampang and surrounding areas, depending on what’s interesting to see

Phrae -> Loei

LOEI (4 days/5 nights): Phu Kradung – Chiang Khan and surrounding areas, depending on what’s worth seeing

BANGKOK (XINHUA) - Le réseau ferroviaire MRT de Bangkok a commencé lundi 29 juillet un essai de deux mois sur un nouveau tronçon de la Blue Line, au long duquel les navetteurs peuvent se rendre gratuitement aux principales attractions touristiques de la ville, telles que Chinatown, le Grand palais et le temple du Bouddha couché. Le ministre thaïlandais des Transports Saksayam Chidchob a assisté à l'inauguration du premier train entre Hua Lamphong et Tha Phra, organisé lundi matin. Il a déclaré aux médias que les passagers peuvent profiter des trajets gratuits jusqu'au 28 septembre. Here’s the itinerary I’ve planned for this new trip to Thailand:

Arrival – 2 nights in Bangkok (any hotel recommendations? Very quiet, near Chinatown or by the river)

Train or taxi (which app should I use for Thailand?) to Phetchaburi – 2 nights (any hotel recommendations?)

Daytime train to Surat Thani – 1 night there (any hotel recommendations?)

Pick up the rental car and head to Khao Sok – 1 night there (any hotel recommendations?)

Drive to Ko Kho Khao – 3 nights – relaxation (any hotel recommendations?)

Drive to Phang Nga Bay – 1 night (any base recommendations?)

Excursion in the bay, then drive to Krabi – 2 nights (any hotel recommendations) or any other spot with beautiful, quiet beaches that you might know?

Return to Surat Thani – overnight train to Bangkok, then Ayutthaya (any hotel recommendations?)

Visit the site and transfer to the airport – sniff, time to head back!

If you have other suggestions, keeping in mind the trip’s vibe: beach time without crowds or entertainment, a bit of nature, a bit of culture, no stress... No domestic flights and charming accommodations (not at 150 € per night, even though the budget is reasonable!)

Not sure I’ll follow them all, but all your ideas are welcome! 😉

Bonjour, Je souhaite me rendre en Asie du sud est, en octobre 2019 (365e), 40 jours.

Mon envie est le Laos, même si l'arrivée est Bangkok. Faire une halte là-bas de deux jours, serait-il bath?(hahaha)😊

On passe 17h à Pékin, je me disais que s'il on peut sortir de l'aéroport, c'est top. Un taxi, un resto bouiboui, et plus..) . Peut-on?

Est il facile de prendre le pont de l'amitié (en train non?)? Après c'est le bus je crois. Aller au nord est-il meilleur? Je cherche à approcher des gens qui seront aussi intéressés par un blanc, que moi par eux. Ou moins corrompu par notre argent ostentatoire. Les endroits touristiques, je serai obligé, et tant mieux pour les facilités, de les fréquenter.

Je me demande si il y a un distributeur de billet ou un bureau de change à l'aéoport de sukhothai puisque j'aurais besoin de cash pour payer le taxi pour old Sukhothai.

Plus que la double tarification, la nouvelle réglementation établit quatre niveaux de taux pouvant être facturés en fonction du statut de visa du patient. Les coûts de traitement sont fixés à quatre niveaux: les ressortissants thaïlandais, les étrangers des pays voisins et les étrangers qui travaillent sans visa d'immigrant. Le quatrième groupe est constitué de touristes et de retraités.

Alors que les étrangers des autres pays de l'ANASE semblent payer les mêmes taux que les patients thaïlandais, ils augmentent considérablement pour le troisième groupe - qui comprend la plupart des expatriés - tandis que les retraités et les touristes en sont vraiment victimes.

Departure is fast approaching. The decision is made—we’ll be returning to Laos via the north. We land at BKK at 7:30 AM. Buses to Chiang Rai leave in the evening starting at 5:30 PM. We’ll head straight to Chiang Khong afterward. Now, a lot of questions remain:

What’s the most budget-friendly way to get to Mochit 2 terminal? Can we buy the bus ticket the same day at the terminal, or do we need to book it in advance? So far, all my searches point me to 12GO for reservations. Where can we leave our luggage while waiting for the bus to Chiang Rai? In Chiang Rai, where can we take the bus from Bus Terminal 2 to Bus Terminal 1? Do you know the bus number? On Thailandee.com, the price is 70 THB/person, but on 12GO, the minimum price is 17 €—can you spot the mistake?

Do we need to redo the TDAC when we return to Thailand, or will the departure one still be valid?

I’m heading to Thailand in February 2025 with my family (my partner and two kids), and we’ll be spending a few days in Khao Sok.

I plan to fly into Surat Thani Airport from Bangkok, but I haven’t booked the flight yet because I can’t find clear, up-to-date info on transportation between the airport and Khao Sok village (we’re staying at Green Mountain View).

If possible, I’d love to find a direct transfer that doesn’t require going through Surat Thani city.

The site https://12go.asia/ has a lot of options, but I’ll admit it’s pretty confusing—especially since I’m not sure which arrival time to pick:



Then there’s a mix of taxi and minivan offers, some with schedules, some without, and some that don’t even match the destination I chose. It’s all a bit overwhelming!

I’ve also read that Phantip Travel offers cheap transfers, but their website doesn’t list Khao Sok as a destination when you select Surat Thani Airport.

Basically, I just want to play it safe—book the right flight with a schedule that makes it easy to get to Khao Sok without any hassle...

Au-dela de vos conseils sur l'une d'entre elles, pourriez-vous me dire s'il est possible d'aller les visiter directement depuis Koh Phra Thong ?

Je pars seule (pour des raisons logistique et financière mon mari ne me suit pas) pendant 15 jours du 3 au 17 décembre avec Leclerc voyage pour TUI , le circuit Sourire Thaï avec extension à Jomtien, Y a t il des personnes parmis ce forum qui ferait ce même circuit au même date ?

J'ai un peu peur d'être seule mais je souhaite vraiment faire ce voyage, besoin phsyique et psychique !!

Tout est organisé, avion, hôtel sauf 4 repas je crois et les repas de midi pendant l'extension à Jomtien mais je ne me fais pas de soucis sur le fait que je puisse me nourrir, sauf une question, faut il vraiment se méfier des repas dans la rue ? (je me suis fais vacciné contre l'hépatite A au cas où), ayant une sclérose en plaque je ne veux prendre aucun risque enfin même si je n'avais pas de SEP en fait !! Puis je boire un de leur jus de fruit frais sans risque ?

- si je prend environ 600 ou 700 euros d'argent de poche ça vous parrait correcte ou trop ? je compte me faire plaisir avec du shopping (dans la limite de ma valise) plus des souvenirs pour ma famille ( 4 freres et soeurs, autant de beau frere et belle soeur et surtout 11 neveu et nièce) sans compter mon mari et mon fils, bref tout eune tribu

- Je dois faire un peu de change avant de partir ou vaut mieux à Bangkok ?

- je voudrais acheter une carte sim assez rapidement pour donner de mes nouvelles, donc achat à l'aeroport ou centre ville ? je sais que je peux chez AIS à l'aeroport mais si c'est en ville que me conseillez vous ?

Sinon je sais qu'il ne faut pas laisser son passeport (toujours photocopie), ne pas boire l'eau du robinet ou bouteille ouverte, mais si vous avez d'autres conseils je suis preneuse.

Ah et les insectes et autres bêtes !! je risque d'en rencontrer beaucoup ? (phobie des guêpes, abeilles, bourdon et toute cette famille)

We have the opportunity to get away for a little two-week trip at the very beginning of January, just the two of us, without our kids. Because of the kids, we haven’t traveled much in Asia, so we’d love to take advantage of their absence to explore Thailand. Even though I’m used to planning our trips, I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed this time.

We’d like to visit Bangkok and head south by renting a car (we have an international driver’s license, and my husband has driven on the left before). I’ve managed to sketch out a rough itinerary that might work for us, and I’d love to hear your thoughts.

To set the scene: we haven’t booked anything yet, we don’t like spending hours on the beach (though a little time at the end of the day is fine), we love walking and sightseeing, and what we enjoy most is being independent (so if we can avoid group tours, that’s ideal).

After that intro, here’s the rough outline of our itinerary: Day 0: Paris-Bangkok flight Days 1, 2, and 3: Bangkok (Wat Pho, Grand Palace, Wat Arun, markets, boat ride through the khlongs, Jim Thompson House) Day 4: Ayutthaya Day 5: Pick up a rental car and head to Sam Roi Yot Day 6: Sam Roi Yot and Prachuap Khiri Khan Day 7: Drive south – overnight near Surat Thani Day 8: Uthayan Tham Khao Na Nai, then drive to Ao Nang (staying near Tubkaek) Days 9 and 10: Boat trips (Railay, Ko Hong, etc.) Day 11: Drive to Phang Nga with a few stops along the way Day 12: Boat tour (mangroves and Ko Tapu) Day 13: Drive to Phuket Airport and return flight

A few questions and doubts: - I’d considered Cheow Lan Lake but read some not-so-great reviews (crowds, just 3 viewpoints, and the rest was meh). What do you think? - Can we start from Ao Thalane Pier for trips to Ko Hong and Ko Tapu? - I’m not thrilled about driving through Bangkok, but I’m not sure where to rent a car west of the city (since we won’t return it to the same place, I assume it’s best to target rental companies at airports).

Nous avons particulièrement apprécié son immense plage extrêmement bien entretenu et ces transats a disposition. Concernant la ville nous cherchons des infos, est-ce aussi vivant q'HH, les restaus en bord de plage sont-ils sympas et abordables.? Nous cherchons hôtels ou guesthouse bien situés pour y séjourner une 15 de jours , pas trop chers (20 a 30 euros pour 2) car nous séjournons 2 mois en Thaïlande. - Can you choose the denominations at exchange bureaus/ATMs? How do you avoid ending up with only 1000-baht notes when exchanging large sums? - If not, is there an easy way to get change? Any alternatives to buying stuff at 7-Eleven? - Can you buy train tickets from Thonburi to Kanchanaburi in advance? Is there usually space available, considering some people do the Death Railway day trip from Bangkok to Sai Yok Noi? - Is there room for luggage on the trains to Kanchanaburi? We’ll be traveling as a group of four with two large checked-baggage-sized suitcases (25 kg each). - Kanchanaburi: Most day tours allow around 3 hours at Erawan Falls. Is that enough, or is it worth spending the whole day there, especially at the start of the rainy season when it’s a bit greener? - In Sam Roi Yot, are there taxis/Grab/Bolt available for exploring the surrounding areas? I’d appreciate any numbers or addresses. - Does True (7-Eleven) have good coverage across Thailand, from Sam Roi Yot to Chiang Rai, or should we go with AIS? - In Bangkok, if you need to switch BTS lines, do you need a new ticket, or can you change lines as long as you don’t exit the station?

Hi there. I wanted to check and asked Krungsri Bank if they offered a cash advance at the counter to avoid Thai ATM withdrawal fees. They told me yes, but only up to 200 baht. No, I didn’t forget a zero—it’s not even 6 €... That doesn’t get you very far.

Can anyone confirm this info, or are there banks that offer a larger cash advance? Krungsri is the only bank that does currency exchange in the town where I’m currently staying in Thailand.
