Our flights are booked, and we’ll arrive in Thailand at the beginning of January.

Originally, we were supposed to spend 14 days there. But after booking the flights and seeing the prices, we’ll now be there for 20 days instead.

Our initial plan was: 2 days in Bangkok 1 day in Ayutthaya 4 days in Chiang Mai 6 days around Krabi

So we have 7 more days to fill. What do you recommend?

An extra day in Bangkok? Adding more days in the north? If so, where? Exploring another region, like Kanchanaburi or Cheow Lan Lake? Traveling north in stages instead of taking the overnight train?

A few extra details about us: For us, vacation isn’t about relaxation—we love walking, exploring, and packed days don’t bother us. Hiking for hours and doing active things is what makes us happy. That said, we also enjoy visiting villages and towns if they’re worth the detour. In Thailand, we’d like to visit temples too. We’re early risers, so our days tend to be long. 🙂 In short, we like to keep things moving during our trips. 😉

Unfortunately, seeing terraced rice fields isn’t possible in January. I read there are rice fields around Sukhothai. Are they green in January?

In the north, do you recommend Doi Inthanon, Huai Nam Dang, or Doi Chiang Dao National Parks? Which one is the most beautiful and best for January?

Bonjour, Nous partons 3 semaines en Thaïlande au mois de janvier. J’ai besoin de réponses à quelques-unes de nos interrogations. Voici le programme désiré : Nous souhaitons commencer notre circuit directement depuis Chiang mai et descendre à notre rythme jusqu’à Bangkok. ( 8 à 10 jours ) De Bangkok, train jusqu’à Surat tani et bateau pour Koh Samui. (3 à 5 jours) De Koh Samui bateau pour Koh Tao ( 4-5 jours) Départ de Koh Tao pour Chumphon. De Chumphon on reprendra le train pour remonter à Bangkok et rentrer à Paris.

Comme vous pouvez le comprendre, on n’a pas vraiment envie de fixer des dates précises et on a vraiment envie de vivre notre parcours au jour le jour. On a visité Bangkok à deux reprises par le passé, donc juste une nuit en fin de parcours nous suffira. C’est pourquoi on voulait atterrir à Chiang mai et commencer depuis le nord. On voit tout le monde faire l’inverse. C’est peut-être con comme question mais est-ce que ça pose un problème de faire du nord à Bangkok plutôt que de Bangkok au nord ( moins de transport dans ce sens peut-être ???). Vos avis et expérience nous intéresse.

Et enfin, pensez vous que cela soit risqué de ne prévoir aucune nuit avant de partir ? on n’a pas envie de se bloquer à cause des dates réservés dans tel ou tel endroit… on ne veut pas du 4 étoiles, juste un endroit sympa et propre pour passer une bonne nuit. Est-ce que ça se trouve facilement à cette période de l’année ? On pensait aussi à réserver la veille pour le lendemain en fonction de notre avancé. Pareil, vos conseils nous intéresse.

avec mon compagnon nous partons pour un peu plus de 2 semaines en Thailande et notre projet de voyage se porte sur un itinéraire à partir de Bangkok vers Sukhothai, puis MaeSot, Chang rai, Mae Sariang et revenir à Chang Mai.

Bon c'est un premier jet, on affinera sur place.

Je cherche des renseignements sur le trajet Bangkok vers Sukhotai et ça me paraît compliqué.

Nous hésitons entre le train et le bus.Ce sont les horaires qui ne sont pas cool.Arrivée à Sukhothai en pleine nuit!!!!

Nous avons pensé faire une halte à Lopburi mais ça ne simplifie pas vraiment les choses.

Hello, We’re heading to Thailand for 26 days (excluding flights) next July with our two teens (12 and 15 years old). My husband and I have been there several times before they were born—so that’s 15 years ago—and I’m a bit worried about some of the changes that might have happened since, especially with the rise in tourism... I’d also like to keep a pace that allows us to settle in a bit and enjoy local life beyond just the main sights. Plus, we’re pretty active. For now, our plan looks like this:

Arrival in Bangkok, where we’re thinking of spending several days (minimum 4) Chiang Mai for about a week 2 or 3 islands in the Gulf Return to Bangkok for 2 days before departure.

We’re pretty set on Bangkok and Chiang Mai, but we’re unsure about which islands to visit—I’ve read such mixed things that I’m even wondering if we should consider the coast instead. Organization-wise, I’d love any tips or feedback on whether we need to book in advance at this time of year, which transport options to prioritize (train, bus, or plane), and of course, any suggestions for stops or routes. Hi everyone, I’m a die-hard fan of India, but it’s time I discovered Thailand too to broaden my Asian horizons. I’m heading there on January 19, 2025, for a 46-day trip (no visa needed as I’m French). I’ve pored over a few guidebooks and travel blogs. Based on what caught my interest, I’ve put together a rough itinerary and list of sights. But since I know absolutely nothing about Thailand, I’m kind of flying blind here. Since I’m not exactly a spring chicken anymore, I’ve opted for a few bases where I’ll stay several days in the same place. That way, I won’t have to change locations and hotels every day or so, packing and unpacking my suitcase constantly. Instead, I plan to explore the surrounding area each day, within a maximum radius of 50 to 70 km. So, first question: Is that kind of round-trip distance manageable in a day in Thailand? In India, renting a car for a day—with a driver—currently costs around 35 to 40 € per day. Knowing that 1,300 to 1,500 THB would be my absolute max, and even then, only if I don’t rent a car every single day. Which brings me to my second question: Am I being unrealistic? Otherwise—third question—once I’m settled in the city I’ve chosen as my base, can I get around within that 50–70 km radius using public transport? I’ve already booked all my hotels—with free cancellation—on booking.com at an average price of 950/1,000 THB per night. Does that put me in a good range for value for money? Or am I dreaming?

Here’s my plan:

BANGKOK (13 days, 14 nights): 1 week for exploring Bangkok – Kanchanaburi/Erawan National Park? – Ayutthaya/Lopburi? – Muang Boran – Samut – Songkram/Amphawa

Bangkok -> Chiang Mai by overnight train in first-class sleeper

CHIANG MAI (6 days/6 nights): Mae Hong Son – Hot springs – Chiang Dao – caves – Lamphun – other places to be decided on the spot based on what’s worth seeing and transport options

Chiang Mai -> Chiang Rai

CHIANG RAI (7 days/8 nights): Fang – Tha Ton – Chiang Saen – Doi Tung – Chiang Khong – Doi Ang Khang, Phu Chi Fah, etc.

Chiang Rai -> Phrae

PHRAE (4 days/5 nights): Lampang and surrounding areas, depending on what’s interesting to see

Phrae -> Loei

LOEI (4 days/5 nights): Phu Kradung – Chiang Khan and surrounding areas, depending on what’s worth seeing

Loei -> Buriram

PHIMAI (Nakhon Ratchasima/Khorat) (5 days/6 nights): Phimai – Prasat Muang Tam – Phanom Rung – Prasat Phanom Wan

Hi everyone! I’m reaching out because we’re planning a trip to Thailand next year (around March/April), and we’d like to visit Chiang Mai and then Krabi, plus a few islands near Krabi. We’ve been to Thailand before, 10 years ago, and this time, we’d just like to focus on 5 days in Chiang Mai and 10–12 days in the Krabi area. I’ll admit, I’m really struggling to pick an island near Krabi. We hated Phi Phi: dirty, noisy, and the food was gross… such a letdown! Which island would you recommend for snorkeling, nature walks, and beautiful beaches? Maybe we could also make a stop between Chiang Mai and Krabi—perhaps Sukhothai? Is it easy to travel between these three cities? Thanks so much for your help! 🙂

My friend and I are heading to Thailand for three weeks between December 14th and January 4th.

After a week of relaxation in the south by the beach, we plan to explore northern Thailand to see the mountains and discover the country’s history before wrapping up in Bangkok.

I’m torn about which region to explore. For convenience, we’ll arrive in Chiang Mai, spend a few days in the area, then head to Lampang, followed by Sukhothai, and finally Bangkok.

After Chiang Mai (1 or 2 days—I’m worried the period might be too crowded and we won’t enjoy it much), we’ll have 3 days and could go to: Mae Hong Son (with a potential return flight); Chiang Dao and Fang; or Nan province, though that seems a bit far for just 3 days. We could also spend only one day in Chiang Mai and have 4 days instead.

For these 3 (or 4) days between Chiang Mai and Lampang, we’d love to do some beautiful hikes, preferably on our own, and see stunning landscapes, nature, and small villages.

Among my options, which would you recommend? Or where can we find great hikes that we can do independently and that aren’t overrun by mass tourism? I’ll admit, I’m struggling to find info—there are lots of small national parks, but details are scarce, and even AllTrails doesn’t have much for some of them...

Just to clarify, we’re considering hiring a car with a driver if needed.

J'ai cherché sur le forum, je n'ai pas trouvé grand-chose. En ce qui concerne notre ami Google, il me signal un seul et unique bus, qui part à 00:45. Si j'arrive à éviter les mini-vans, ça ne me dérangera pas. En taxi, ça à l'air un peu cher (dans les 1500.-). Donc je cherche un bus...

Does anyone know of a private transfer or taxi company that organizes transfers from the Sukhothai area to Chiang Mai? Our routes are Sukhothai-Lampang, Lampang-Chom Thong, and Chom Thong-Chiang Mai. My searches on Google Maps, 12Go, and others haven’t turned up much...

For our Bangkok-Sukhothai trips, I use a company I’ve already tried, but they don’t have a fleet available from Sukhothai and have to go through third-party companies—which, understandably, take their commission. This nearly doubles the prices...

There are four of us, and we’re not traveling light, so a minibus isn’t an option. ;-)

J'ai passé tout le mois de mars dans le nord - Chiang Rai et les villes plus au nord puis Chiang Mai et la boucle de Mae Hong Son - J'ai beaucoup aimé mais la pollution due aux écobuages est dangereuse. Chiang Mai classée la ville la plus polluée du MONDE quand j'y étais Donc en montagne aucune vue, dommage. Rando déconseillées. En avril ça se calme dès les 1e pluies ? Et il fait très chaud déja, meme en montagne plus frais la nuit mais 39° en journée.

Hi everyone, we’ll be in Thailand from August 2nd to 21st, arriving in Bangkok on the 2nd for a visit. From the 5th to the 8th: Angkor temples. Then, starting on the 9th, we’re planning to head to Chiang Mai, and by the 14th or 15th, we’d like to be on an island until the 19th, when we return to Bangkok. Five days in Chiang Mai seems a bit long to us. What do you recommend between the 9th and 15th, and which island? We’re not big fans of sunbathing—we’d love to snorkel and explore the island. Ideally, I’d have liked to find a house to rent, but every time, I end up with places far from the beach, whereas we’d really like to be able to walk to the beach for strolls. By the way, are there a lot of shells? Can we collect them? It seems that in August, swimming can sometimes be tricky due to tides—is that true? Thanks to all the contributors! 😊

Bonjour, je vais passer 3 semaines en Thaïlande en mars, avec mon mari c’est notre premier voyage dans ce pays, nous organisons tout nous-mêmes. Avant de réserver des hôtels, j’aimerais bien savoir si notre projet est réaliste. J’ai déjà réservé la 1e nuit à Bangkok et les 5 nuits suivantes dont 3 nuits à Hua Hin pour se remettre du décalage horaire et pour faire quand même un peu de plage et 2 nuits à Phetchaburi pour voir le parc national Kaeng Krachan. Voilà ce que j’imagine pour la suite et où j’ai besoin de vos lumières : revenir à Bangkok et y rester 3-4 jours, puis le pont de la rivière Kwai (1 nuit), ensuite 2 nuits à Ayuttaya, 2 à Sukhotai, 1 à Lampang, 3 à Chiang Rai pour voir le triangle d’or, et pour finir 3 à Chiang Mai d’où nous prenons l’avion pour le Laos. Ce qui fait en tout 15 nuitées à prévoir. Ma question aux connaisseurs : faut-il rester plus longtemps à certaines places et moins à d’autres ? Comment se déplacer d’un endroit à l’autre? D’ores et déjà merci pour les réponses à venir.

Je découvre un article mettant en garde sur le tourisme en cette région de nord à cause de la pollution due aux brulis de foret ...la visibilité serait souvent réduite, le ciel couvert...Qui a été en avril et peut me renseigner? Si alors le nord n'est pas le bon choix en avril, est ce que l'Isan est épargnée par cette tradition? Quelle région privilgier en avril en dehors des iles du sud?? Merci!

Je ne sais pas où nous allons dormir mais j'ai envie de dire vers Bangkok Nord (chatuchak).

Donc comment se rendre à don muang a cette heure matinale ? Bus ? Est ce peut-être mieux de partir du "centre"?

After a successful first trip in 2025, with the help of forum members, we’d love to return to this amazing cultural melting pot in 2026 for three weeks (2 adults, 2 kids aged 13 and 16).

We’d like to explore new places in the Northeast: fly into Khon Kaen and explore the region—Loei, Nong Khai, perhaps? A detour to the center to visit Sukhothai would be a great addition.

I’ll admit, planning this itinerary is a bit trickier for me since I’m less familiar with these areas and what they have to offer. The distances also seem longer than our previous transfers (BKK-Kanchanaburi-Kaeng Krachan-Sam Roi Yot...).

Do you have any suggestions or hidden gems to explore in the Northeast and Central regions that keep travel time between stops reasonable (3-4 hours)?

Nous avons une bonne connaissance de l'Afrique du Nord, mais sur les conseils d'amis nous souhaitons nous "lancer" en Asie du Sud Est. Nous projetons de partir 6 à 7 semaines à partir du 28 octobre 2020. Nos poles d'interets sont -visites -petits trecs -vivre au milieu des habitants. -calme Il faudrait que le circuit tienne compte des conditions climatiques, surtout" pas trop chaud" On aime bien se déplacer en bus ou train . Gros problème....par quel pays débuter?Quel circuit peut-on envisager? Je suis certain que "ce maudit confinement"permettra un échange fructueux Je vous en remercie à l'avance.

Hi there, During our Thailand trip, we're planning to arrive in Bangkok and then head up to Chiang Mai. So far, so good. But after that, we'd like to go to the islands—either Krabi or Koh Samui. However, the flights listed on 12go.asia seem complicated, with a layover of about 1 hour in Bangkok where we'd have to collect our luggage and check in for the second flight. That feels way too tight.

So, I'd love to hear about your experiences with this route and any tips you might have. Thanks everyone!

bonjour nous ferons un circuit en thailande en avril 2020 pendant 2 semaines. vol arrivée et départ en thailande à Bangkok visite de Bangkok montée vers le nord en passant par kanchanaburi, ayuttaya, sukhotai, chiang rai, chiang mai. vol chiang mai-phuket baie de phang gna

et pour terminer le périple nous voulons trouver un petit coin de paradis au bord de mer/océan pour voir de beaux paysages, se détendre, nager et plonger avec masque et tuba. Le problème c'est que je trouve de tout comme avis, du bon , du mauvais, une info et son contraire et je ne sais plus quoi penser. je lis dans plusieurs posts que les îles de thailande qui étaient paradisiaques ne le sont plus, que ce sont des poubelles, qu'elles sont détruites par le tourisme de masse, que les coraux sont morts, que les poissons ne sont plus là, que l'on ne peut être que déçus...

Alors si vous avez fait un voyage en thailande récemment, dites-moi si c'est vrai, s'il vous plait. ou bien donnez-moi une lueur d'espoir en me donnant une adresse, un lieu encore préservé où il reste quelques poissons colorés et exotiques à voir. Est-ce que les requins et les tortues dont tout le monde parle sont là ou pas? si oui où sont-ils? Ou bien est-ce du bluff purement commercial?

Où me conseillez-vous de terminer notre voyage?

I really loved Thailand, but it was too touristy for my taste. So I'm hesitating about going back and wondering if Cambodia or Vietnam would be less crowded with tourists...

Je viens de regarder les chiffres du tourisme .Et c'est bien ce que je pensais le nombre de voyageurs/touristes pour la Thailande a explosé .On me dira qu'il y a pas mal de chinois dans le lot.Je me demande si c'est pas comme aller à Noire moutier ou sur la côte d'Azur désormais en pleine été.

Je lis sur le forum que les prix ont explosé .Effet du tourisme de masse ?

Il y a aussi le change 1€ pour 34 baths qui pique.Je suis parti à l'époque des 1€ = 45/50 baths.2005 à 2008 J'ai fais 1 an en tous là bas.

Est ce que vous avez vu une sacrée différence sur la période 2010 jusqu'à maintenant? J'ai l'impression que c'est par tranche...

Avec les reportage tv en Fr, j'ai aussi l'impression que ça a rameuté pas mal de monde. Je suis rentré dans une boutique des jeunes vendeurs parlaient de leurs futurs vacances en Thailande. Il y a 15/20 ans ces jeunes seraient parti sur la côte d'azur , noiremoutier...Alors qu'il y avait des billets pas cher .J'avais payé allé retour 550€ en 2005.

Je pense pas que je retournerai en Thailande car plus le temps que j'avais à 25 ans.Je m'oriente plus vers des endroits ou il y a moins de tourisme de masse, pour l'Asie du Sud Est mais c'est pas au programme pour l'instant.

J'imagine les gens qui y ont été dans les années 80/90 ça devait vraiment être top.Moi 2005 c'était sympas après j'ai commencé à voir que l'engouement monté.

Après on nous bassine avec la fin du pétrole mais les billets longs trajets sont vraiment pas cher.Je pense que c'est ça aussi qui crame la destination.

Hi everyone, I’m starting to plan my next trip to Southeast Asia this winter (2.5 months, leaving in early December), and here’s a rough outline of my route—I’d love to share it with you and hear your thoughts and tips.

- I’ll start in Bangkok and already have three spots I’ve marked: Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, and Uthai Thani (I haven’t been to any of these places yet). - Next, I’d like to cross the country from west to east to reach the Laos border. I’d love suggestions for any interesting stops along this route—I don’t know this part of Thailand at all... - Then I’ll head into Laos, probably at Savannakhet (you can usually get a visa at the border). - > I’m tempted to spend a week in Hoi An, Vietnam, since I loved that city and the area when I visited two years ago. No visa needed for Vietnam now, so it could be a nice little detour. On the map, it doesn’t look too far, but I know you’ve got to be careful with these things, and I’m not sure if it’s a good idea. Any opinions on this? - Back to Laos (maybe via Dakta), and I’ll head south along the Mekong, probably doing the Bolaven Plateau loop that I missed last time. Then Paksé, the 4,000 Islands... I’ve been before, but I’d happily go back. - Crossing into Cambodia, I’ll follow the Mekong down to Phnom Penh (I know this area and love how untouristy it is). From there, I’ll probably spend a few days in Kep (quieter than Kampot). We’ll see how things look when the time comes. - After that, I’d like to explore southern Thailand, taking it slow with short hops. I’ve got my eye on Khao Sok National Park, and I’ve heard good things about Krabi... Again, I don’t know this region well, so any info or tips would be great.

So, I think this should be doable in 2.5 months, especially since I prefer short hops of 300 km max to avoid getting too tired, and I like staying 2-3 days in each place to explore. Plus, I’ll take a week off to relax if I find a spot I love—maybe by the sea for some real downtime.

- Pour prendre un avion Bangkok-Sukhothai à 7h à l'aéroport Suvarnabhumi de Bangkok, à quelle heure prendre un taxi depuis le quartier Chinatown ? Nous aurons des bagages à enregistrer en soute. Si on part de notre hotel à Chinatown vers 4h30/5h, ça devrait etre bon à votre avis ?
