Is it better to return the car in Arita or Nagasaki? Day 11: Nagasaki Day 12: Nagasaki, overnight in Fukuoka, so departure by train from Nagasaki Day 13: Munakata and Oshima, and in the evening, Hanabi Kama

Day 14: Mount Hiko, Toho, Soeda. Is there a pottery village? With or without hands-on experience?

Day 15: Yame (Hoshino tea visit) and Kurume Masure workshop

Days 16, 17, 18, 19: Fukuoka city and maybe Nokonoshima or Kitakyushu

Any suggestions? Does this seem balanced?

This time, we’re taking more time—about a month—with the following points of interest: Start of the trip with a few days in Tokyo Osaka International Exposition on October 11–12, 2025 Jidai Matsuri Festival in KYOTO on October 22, 2025 Karatsu Kunchi Festival from November 2–4 Our goal is to blend into the crowd and make connections in festive atmospheres. Do these stops sound interesting to you? Is it a good idea to stay in a central location between October 10 and 23 to get to the Osaka Expo and the Jidai Matsuri Festival in Kyoto using public transport, and to explore the region in between? Between Kyoto and the KARATSU Festival from October 23 to November 1, we’re thinking of traveling by shinkansen with a stopover for a few days to visit Hiroshima and the surrounding area. Hi there, These cities aren’t in the guidebooks much, but they’re absolutely worth a detour—just 180 km from Osaka and perfect for a stop on your way back from the south or heading down from Osaka. I’ve been here for five days, and the autumn colors are simply stunning: bright reds, vibrant yellows, deep maroons, and lush greens against a crystal-blue sky. Fall here is magical. Plus, the canal in central Okayama (Nishigawa) is all lit up. Hardly any Western tourists stop here, but there are plenty of Japanese visitors.

Here are the cities I’d like to visit, along with my current itinerary, which doesn’t feel quite right. I’m also wondering where the best places to pick up and drop off the rental car would be. International flights from Osaka + the SL Hitoyoshi train ride are part of the plan.

Ojika: Would one night be enough?

Yakushima: Are two full days (plus two half-days) sufficient?

If we keep the schedule as is, we have one extra day to fit in somewhere—any suggestions?

Bonjour à tous je prépare mon deuxième voyage au Japon qui se fera fin juin/deux premières semaines de juillet 2020 pour un total de 3 semaines. Destination Kyushu et Okinawa - par précaution nous commencerons par quelques jours sur Okinawa. Nous atterrissons directement à Fukuoka (sur Finnair via Helsinki) et repartons de même (sur JAL via Tokyo). Je sais que ce n'est pas la période idéale il risque de pleuvoir et d'y avoir peut être des typhons, mais nous ferons avec :) Avez vous des conseils ? mon compagnon est plus âgé que moi (il a 71 ans) et je voudrais éviter de trop bouger sur les îles (je préfère faire des haltes en général de 3 jours pour profiter des endroits que nous visitons). En même temps pour Okinawa ne pas m'éloigner de l'île principale est dommage - mais j'ai du mal à mettre en place un itinéraire avec des vols internes par exemple vers Miyakijima qui ne coutent pas trop chers. Je pensais pouvoir partir de Fukuoka et revenir à Kagoshima (point de départ de nos visites de Kyushu) mais j'ai l'impression que ce n'est pas possible. Je n'arrive pas à voir si c'est possible d'arriver à Miyakijima en partant de Fukuoka, et repartir de Naha vers le Kyushu. Par ailleurs - sur le site de la compagnie Peach les vols ne sont déjà plus disponibles, est-ce que c'est parce que les réservations ne sont pas encore ouvertes ou qu'il n'y a déjà plus de place ? My partner is running the Tokyo Marathon on March 1st, 2026. So we’re planning a 3-week trip to Japan to include this event! We’ll likely be traveling from February 21st to March 14th.

Our current idea is to visit: 1) Kyoto 2) Tokyo 3) The Five Lakes region (e.g., Mt. Odake, Mitsutogeyama, Lake Kawaguchi, Lake Sai, Mt. Ryugatake, Myōjinyama...) 4) Kyushu (for example: Mt. Kujū, Mt. Aso, Eboshi-dake, Mt. Karakuni, Kirishima Mountains, Takachihonomine....)

We found a flight that would let us arrive in Osaka and depart from Kutakyushu. We really want to soak up Japanese culture but don’t want to spend all our time just in cities. Museums, exhibits, etc., aren’t really our thing, and we’d like to include some hikes.

1) Do you think this itinerary is realistic for 3 weeks? 2) In Kyushu, we’d like to rent a car—do you think it’d also be a good idea to rent one for the Five Lakes region? 3) I’d love to stay in a temple to take part in monks’ rituals. Any tips on that?

My partner and I are heading to Japan for the first time from mid-December to mid-January for 31 days. It’s a long-held dream we’ve been saving for over two years, and we want to enjoy ourselves while also being mindful of our budget for parts of the trip. We’d love to explore Tokyo, but we’ve chosen to spend more time in nature. My partner plans to get his driver’s license translated locally so we can rent a car. We’ve heard from friends who’ve been that Japan isn’t the best place for improvisation, so we’ve tried to allow plenty of time in each location to avoid rushing. Still, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the itinerary we’ve planned—whether it’s feasible in terms of travel and how interesting it seems. Given the recent increase in the JR Pass price and the fact that we’ll spend about ten days on Goto, Ojika, and Yakushima (where the JR Pass doesn’t cover travel), we don’t think it’s worth it for us. Instead, we’re planning to take the train from Tokyo to Fukuoka and then use buses and ferries for the rest of Kyushu. Here’s our itinerary:

1- December 13 / Arrival in Tokyo, one night in Tokyo, then departure for Fukuoka by train on the morning of the 14th.

2 - December 14-16 / 2 nights in Fukuoka, sightseeing, then departure on the evening/night of the 16th by ferry to Ojika Islands.

3 - December 17-21 / 4 nights on Ojika, cycling and exploring, then departure on the 21st by ferry to Fukue on the Goto Islands.

4 - December 21-24 / 3 nights on the Goto Islands, renting a car to explore, maybe a trip to Hisaka. Departure for Nagasaki by ferry on the morning of the 24th.

5- December 24-26 / 2 nights in Nagasaki, visiting the city and memorials, possibly the hot springs in Unzen. Departure on the evening of the 26th by bus or ferry (?) to Kumamoto.

6- December 26-29 / 3 nights in Kumamoto, sightseeing, day trip by car to Mount Aso and surrounding areas. Departure on the 29th in the late afternoon by bus to Kagoshima, overnight in Kagoshima.

7- December 30 to January 2 / Morning departure by ferry to Yakushima for 3 nights, hiking and exploring the island. Departure on January 2 on the only ferry (?) in the early afternoon back to Kagoshima.

8- January 2 to 5 / Uncertain leg... We’d like to spend the night of the 4th to the 5th at a ryokan in Kurokawa Onsen and then head back to Fukuoka and Tokyo by train on the 5th. From the 2nd to the 4th, since we’ll arrive in Kagoshima in the late afternoon, we thought we could head back up to Kumamoto by train or bus—going to Yufuin or Beppu would take much longer and leave us with very little time. But is it worth staying another 2 nights in Kumamoto to explore the area, given we’ll already be there for 3 days from December 26-29? Or should we stay in Kagoshima and head up to Kurokawa Onsen on the afternoon of the 4th for our overnight stay?

9- January 5 to 13, Tokyo and its endless things to do and see, then back to France!

Voici une ébauche de mon itinéraire, j' aimerais avoir vos avis sur celui çi. Arrivée le 25/03 à Fukuoka 3nuits Départ le 28 pour Yanagawa, kurume, yame 3nuits Départ le 31 pour Kumamoto 2nuits Départ le 02 pour Kagoshima 2nuits Retour le 04 à Fukuoka 4nuits (Visite de Beppu, Usiki, Itoshi, Hoshino et Kitakyushu)

Pensez-vous qu'il soit possible de tout visiter? Je ne sais pas trop comment organiser mon itinéraire par rapport aux distances des villes. Mes centres d'intêrets sont la visites de temples, les toris sur la mer, les rizières , les plantations de thé, être proche des habitants, la nature...

Je cherche aussi un ryokan assez sympa mais pas hors de prix mais je ne sais pas dans quel endroit il vaut mieux le prendre.

Pour Kyushu, nous aurions environ 9-10 jours car je veux être à Tokyo pour ma fête. Nous y serons en février. (et oui, je comprends que 10 jours ce n'est pas beaucoup, mais nous devons faire avec...)

Quel genre d'itinéraire vous me suggérer? Nous sommes ouvert à tout, ou presque. Pour avoir rester 1 jour à Fukuoka il y a 7 ans, nous avions aimé notre première impression de la ville. Donc, c'est sûr qu'on aimerait y consacrer peut-être un peu de temps. pour le reste, je suis ouvert à vos idées

Pour Shikoku, je comprends qu'il faut idéalement, louer une auto. Je ne crois pas avoir de problème à convaincre mon conjoint de le faire. Ça semble être une région peu visité par les étrangers et un peu plus "relax" que le reste du pays. Bref....

Nous allons faire avec ma compagne un voyage de 18 jours courant octobre en partant de Fukuoka jusqu'à Tokyo, en explorant l'île de Kyushu et les montagnes de Tokushima et Ehime.

Je cherche quelques conseils et recommandations de lieux à visiter : villages, trek, temples et lieux incroyables et zen, adresses de ryokan et autres minshuku.

On cherche de l'authentique, un peu en dehors des sentiers battus et des zones trop touristiques (tout en s'y obligeant surement pour certains spots incontournables), de la nature, des beaux paysages, des contacts sympas avec les gens (un peu de couchsurfing).

Nous pensons aussi prendre la tente pour pouvoir s'arrêter un peu où l'on veut. J'ai trouvé différentes cartes de camping : www.google.com/...x3to&usp=sharing www.hatinosu.net/camp/ www.autocamp.or.jp/ Si vous en connaissez d'autres, n'hésitez pas à les partager. :) Le camping sauvage est interdit me semble-t-il sur les terrains publics... des retours d'expériences ? Il fait froid là-haut dans les montagnes (nous y privilégierons les ryokan entre 2 treks) ?

Côté pratique, nous nous déplaçons principalement en stop (on prépare le vocabulaire et la méthode assimil), et en bus / train quand il faut. Peut-être un peu de vélo si l'occasion s'y prête, mais étant essentiellement en itinérance, d'un point A à B à C, ça ne sera sans pas pas idéal, d'autant que ma compagne a du mal avec les côtes...

Pour le moment, nous avons prévu l'itinéraire suivant :

KYUSHU : Départ de Fukuoka : ville et environs (2 jours) peut-être l'île aux chats d'Ainoshima (c'est très touristique ?) > Nagasaki > Kumamoto > Kagoshima > remonter à Oita

EHIME / TOKUSHIMA : > de OITA, passer en ferry vers Ehime > Tokushima et notamment la vallée d'Iya (trek de 2 jours, onsen et nuit en ryokan :) > direction Kyoto (peut-être Osaka si nous avons le temps, mais ça me semble court) > Yokohama (voir un ami) > Tokyo > retour en France :'(

Je ne vais malheureusement pas à Yakushima car j'ai lu qu'il était possible que l'ile ne soit pas accessible certains jours à cause de la houle (et j'ai deux jeunes enfants à qui je ne veux pas imposer le stress de trouver un logement de dernière minute). J'hésite à rester un peu plus à Aso afin de mieux découvrir le coin et pourquoi pas faire une journée à Takachiho. Dans ce cas là je supprimerais Beppu ou Nagasaki de mon itinéraire. Est-il envisageable de ne pas louer de voiture pour visiter Aso ? Merci pour vos conseils :)

I’m visiting Tokyo and the Five Lakes region, as well as Kyushu, in February-March. I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed when it comes to choosing onsen and ryokan.

-I’d love to find a nice onsen and possibly a great ryokan in the Five Lakes region to relax a bit after visiting Tokyo.

-I’m also looking for some lovely onsen/rotenburo in Kyushu, as well as a nice ryokan to wrap up our little trip.

Unfortunately, I’m completely lost among all the options. Do you have any recommendations for me?

For Kyushu, I’d love to find an onsen where the outdoor baths are really surrounded by nature. And if possible, a mixed-gender bath so I can enjoy it with my partner (or a private bath, but I get the impression private baths are never outdoors?). As for the ryokan budget, 450 € per night is unfortunately the absolute max...

After several trips to Tokyo and the surrounding areas, as well as Osaka Bay, we’re heading to Northern Kyushu for a week in mid-October (we’ll be in China the other week). We’re a couple with two kids, aged 7 and 9. We’ll arrive at Saga Airport and plan to stay there for a few days to explore Arita, Imari, Karatsu, Hirado, and Dazaifu. We’re thinking Saga isn’t too touristy, so it might be a good choice to find accommodation for 3 or 4 days there and immerse ourselves in a typical Japanese city in the evenings with fewer tourists. 1) Is this a good idea?

My second question is: 2) What are the best neighborhoods in Saga where I can find accommodation (preferably an Airbnb) with free parking but still close to the city center, please? 3) Would you recommend Fukuoka instead?

4) Here’s my first draft of the itinerary:

Saga Airport (we leave straight away) → Beppu Onsen (2-hour drive, we stay one night + Mount Yufu) → Kurokawa Onsen (we stay one night + Mount Kuju) → we pass by Mount Aso (just a drive-around and short walk) → then we go to Suizenji Jojuen in Kumamoto (park in a paid parking lot nearby) → return to Saga in the evening, where we stay this time. Stay in Saga for 3 or 4 nights in an Airbnb with convenient parking in the city center, not too far out, and explore the surrounding areas (Imari, Arita, Karatsu, Hirado, Dazaifu...).

Saga to Nagasaki (minimum 2 nights, ideally 3). Then return to Saga. 5) Same question: where to stay in Nagasaki in accommodation where we can park the car for free and be near or easily accessible to the city center? 6) For all these places, what do you recommend doing with the kids?

I'm planning a 19-day itinerary in Japan this summer. For a first trip, Kyoto seems like a must. For the rest, I'm torn between: - Matsumoto, Takayama, Kanazawa for 5 to 6 days - Kyoto 4 days - Nara 2 days - Koyasan 1 day - Hakone/Mount Fuji 2 to 3 days - Tokyo 3 days

Or dedicating the first 6 days to Kyushu.

Maybe there’s less traditional Japan in Kyushu compared to the Japanese Alps? Maybe Kyushu is less crowded? Thanks for your thoughts!

Great to be back here—it’s been years!

We’re heading to Japan with the family in mid-July and will mostly explore Kyushu for this second trip. We’ll wrap up with 3 days on Yakushima, but we’re planning to fly back to Osaka from Tanegashima after stopping by the space center. To get from Yakushima to Tanegashima, I’ve found two options: - Depart from Miyanoura port and go to Shimama with the Taiyo II ferry, but it arrives a bit too late for us (it gets in at 10:05 AM, and we need to be at the space center by 10:30 AM…) - Depart from Anbo port, but in that case, the boat goes to Nishinoomote, which is all the way at the north of the island—super inconvenient since the space center is at the very south!

Does anyone here know if there’s another way to make the Miyanoura/Shimama trip besides the Taiyo II ferry (like a private boat, a fisherman’s boat, or something else)? It feels silly to go all the way to the north of the island just to head right back down…

Un beau programme qui permet d'atterrir à Tokyo, de faire un petit détour par Kyushu, et de repartir après le dernier match depuis Tokyo.

J'ouvre ce fil pour pouvoir échanger des informations relatives à la coupe du monde, évènements, supporters, lieux de rassemblement, bars... Personnellement j'irai faire un tour dans les pubs sportif, histoire d'aller boire une bière avec des supporters anglais, nz ou autre.

Si vous connaissez des lieux où des supporters français (expats ou touristes) peuvent se rencontrer n'hésitez pas à partager. Tokyo ou Fukuoka ;)

Autre point: l'étiquette. Y-a t-il une étiquette particulière à adopter dans et aux abords des stades japonais ? Quelque chose de spécifique ? Se balader toute la journée en groupe avec un maillot de l'équipe est-il mal vu ? (à éviter dans certains types de restaurants... ?). Je pose cette question car cela change dans tous les pays. (en Angleterre on m'a reproché de m'être levé pour applaudir après un essai...).

J'ai besoin de retours d'expérience sur la conduite au Japon et plus particulièrement sur les îles de shikoku, Kyushu et miyakojim et yakushima. Je serai là-bas en octobre prochain et ai prévu des locations de voiture. Néanmoins j'ai certaines interrogations et appréhensions après avoir lu certains blogs ou guide. Je n'ai jamais conduite à gauche et avec une voiture automatique mais bon ça, je pense que ça ne devrait pas poser de problème. Ce qui me fait douter c'est que j'ai le vertige et les routes de montagnes comme à shikoku ne le rassurent pas. Les routes sont elles étroites au Japon ? Il y a t'il bezucoup de circulation en octobre ? Voit on bezucoup les ravins? Y'a t'il bezucoup de route très pentues en montée ou en descente ?

Commencent par miyakojima, j'espère me familiariser avec la conduite à gauche.

Hi everyone, I’m Julien! This summer, from late June to late July, I’m planning a one-month solo trip to Japan—my first time! I’d love to hear your thoughts and advice on the itinerary I’ve put together to explore this amazing country.

Here are the routes I’m considering:

**Option 1: More mountain and nature-focused**

Tokyo: 8 nights, with day trips to Nikko and maybe the Izu Peninsula Kawaguchiko (Lake Kawaguchi/Mt. Fuji): 1 night. The place looks stunning, but I’m worried Mt. Fuji might not be visible due to the weather Kyoto: 6–7 nights (including a trip to Nara) Osaka: 1–2 nights, where I’d like to drop off my things to make the Kumano Kodo easier Kumano Kodo: 3 nights—an experience I haven’t seen much elsewhere, but I thought it sounded really interesting Hiroshima: 2 nights Miyajima: 1 night Takayama: 3 days Kanazawa: 3 days (From what I understand, the Osaka–Takayama–Kanazawa–Tokyo route is convenient for transport) Tokyo: 1 night (return)

**Option 2: More varied but a bit vague in parts**

Tokyo: 8 nights Kyoto: 7 nights (+ Nara) Osaka: 2 nights Kobe + Himeji: just passing through—I’m not sure if it’s worth a night Naoshima: 1 night—still pretty unclear for me Takamatsu: 2 nights. An interesting city, but I’m not sure how long to stay Shimanami Kaido: biking from Imabari to Onomichi, then heading to Hiroshima Hiroshima: 2 nights Miyajima: 1 night Kyushu road trip (Aso + onsens + Fukuoka): 5 nights (also pretty vague—I could fly from Fukuoka back to Tokyo) Tokyo: 1 night

**Option 3: More balanced/simplified**

Tokyo: 8 nights Kawaguchiko: 1 night Kyoto: 7 nights (+ Nara) Osaka: 2 nights Koya-san: 1 night Kumano Kodo: 3 nights Takayama: 3 nights Kanazawa: 3 nights Tokyo: 1 night

A few key points: I haven’t made any reservations yet, except for the flight tickets. I know my plans are too packed and will need to be adjusted. I’m specifically looking for advice on which stops to cut or shorten.

So this time, a different trip: Day 1: departure Day 2: arrive in Osaka (stroll around the center in the afternoon) Day 3: day trip to Minoh Falls + Katsuo-ji Temple Day 4: Universal Studios. 1h20 train in the evening to Okayama Day 5: visit Okayama (Korakuen Gardens and the castle), then a 25-minute train to Kurashiki (evening stroll) Day 6: 45-minute bus to Fukuyama (day trip to Tomo no Ura). 20-minute train in the evening to Onomichi Day 7: electric bike excursion on the Shimanami Kaido (70 km round trip), return to Onomichi in the evening Day 8: stroll around the heights of Onomichi. In the afternoon, 1h20 train to Takehara Day 9: stroll in Takehara. In the afternoon, train to Hiroshima Day 10: day trip to Miyajima Day 11: explore Hiroshima, then train to Kyoto Day 12: Kyoto (Kinkaku-ji and Ryoan-ji area in the morning). Yes, there are a lot of short transports, but that doesn’t bother me.
